Charles Hanpriels and Ed. Marshall,
who were charged with stealing some
blankets from the East End feed yard,
were convicted before a jury in Justice
Davis court Saturday. The jury was
composed of J. E. Barnett, Nathan
Harris, John Robertson, L. L. Clarke
and W. R. Brown. The evidence, which
was of a circumstantial nature, appeared
to the jury plenty Btrong enough to war
rant conviction, the jury being out about
half an hour. This morning Judge
Davis sentenced the culprits to three
months in the county jail. " They will be
ready to come out with the birds in the
spring. '' ' "

Remember the Poor on Christmas.
Below is published an appeal for aid
from the Salvation Army. As the holi
day season comes the poor of the city
should not be forgotten. The members
of. the Salvation Army are iaboring
among all classes of people and are well
informed as to what caee3 need aid.
This system of organized charity is a
better way than indiscriminate giving,
without inquiring into the merits of the
beneficiaries. Tbe following request of
the Salvation Army should not be over
looked :

As Christmas again appioaches, with
its festivities and rejoicing, we atk yon
not to forget the poor. We are calling
on everyone to help to bring sunshine
into some life that is not blessed as you
are. We ask for contributions of money,
clothing, provisions anything that can
be ufed, at.d they will le acceptable.
Send word to the officers or soldiers of
the Salvation Army, who will call for it,
or send it to the hall, on Front street.
Everything will be given away "publicly
at the opera house on Christmas night,
Dec. 25th, where an entertainment will
be given by the children.

ber 1896,and entered of record in the rec
ords of Dalles City ' on the 4th day of
December, 1895, notice is hereby given
tnat the crosswalks on the following
strets have been declared dangerous by
said' council, on said 3d day of Decem
ber, and the said Common Council, will
proceed ' to make the improvements as
-hereinafter stated, on said ' streets or
parts of streets so declared dangerous,
after fourteen days from the first publi
cation of this notice, to-wit, December
10, 1895; and the cost of such improve
ments of all crosswalks, and of each of
them, will be charged and levied upon
tbe corner lots cornering upon the street
or streets intersected by such cross
walks, and upon all lots or'parts thereof,
to the center of each block cornering
upon such intersection, each lot to pay
that portion of the entire cost that its
street frontage upon the intersecting
streets bears to street frontage of all lots
to be assessed upon such streets, as by
charter provided. The cross walks de
clared dangerous and about to be re
paired and built are as follows, towit :
1. To build a cross walk on the west
side of Laughlin street, across Second
street.
2. To build a cross walk on the west
side of Jefferson street, across Second
street.
3. To build a cross walk on east side
of Jefferson street, across Second street.
4. To build a cross walk on the west
side of Madison street, across Second
street.
5. To build a cross walk on the east
sida of Madison street, across Second

6. To build a cross walk on the west
