MORTON A CASPIDATE.
He Will Accept the Honors Tendered to
Illm al Saratoga.
New Yobk, Dec. 15. The Morning
Advertiser will tomorrow say that Levi
P. Morton is an avowed candidate for
the presidency. The Advertiser is able
to make this announcement on what
may be termed the. best authority.
During the present week a distingushed
party leader told an Advertiser reporter
that the governor may . conclude to take
his friends, into his confidence and de
clare to them how he feels about 1896.
:. A leader who saw the governor Thurs
day last came back with a pretty , good
conviction that Mr. Morton does not
propose to toss away the honor offered
him at the last Saratoga convention,
and that, while he does not propose per
sonally to exert himself, he will "be
pleaeed to have the New York delega
tion stand as finn y for his nomination
at St. Louis as did the famous 306 for
Grant.
Continuing, the Morning Advertiser
says : . .
"The Advertiser possesses other infor
mation which has to do -with the forma
tion of a most powerful combination,
which, when occasion requires it, is in
tended ti be swung to the support of
either Morton, Reed or Allison.
v In Favor ofLait Chinee.
. Boisk, Idaho, Dec. 14, Judge Beatty,
in court today, rendered a decision in
the celebrated mining case of Tyler vs.
the Last Chance Mining Company,
which has twice been to the court of ap
peals and once to the United States su
preme court. The decision is in the
favor of tha Last Chance.
The Atlanta Congress on Africa.
Atlanta, Ga., Dec. 14. Governor At
kinson, in his address before the con
gress on Africa, said, in referring to the
interest of the negroes in the conversion
and salvation of the Dark Continent,
that it remained for each to decide
for himself whether he would go or re
main. "You are free citizens of this republic.
If you care to stay, the choice is yours ;
if you think best to cast your lot among
the people of your old country, none may
say you nay. So long as I have been a
voice in the affairs of Georgia I shall do
my utmost to see that the colored man
has his rlghrs."
The object of this congress is to give
the relation to the civilization and le
demption of Africa. The African ex
plorer and linguist, Hell Chatelaine, J.
M. Smythe, ex minister to Liberia, and
Dr. Alexander Crumell, of Washington,
author of the "Future of Africa," were
among the other speakers. -
