C. H. King, "Water Valley, Kiss., cored by
Acer's Sarsaparilla
"For five years, I suffered untold misery
from muscular rheumatism. I tried every
known remedy, consulted the best physi
cians, visited Hot Springs, Ark., three times,
spending $1000 there, besides doctors' bills;
but could obtain only temporary relief. My
flesh was wasted away so that I weighed
only ninety-tlireo pounds; my left arm and
leg were drawu out of shape, the muscles
being twisted up In knots. I was unable to
dress myself, except with assistance, and
could only hobble about by using a cane. I
had no appetite, and was assured, by the
doctors, that I could not live. The pains, at
times, were so awful, that I could procure
relict only by means of hypodermic Injec
tions of morphine. I had my limbs bandaged
in clay, in sulphur, in poultices; but these
gave only temporary .relief. After trying
everything, and suffering the most awful
tortures, I began to take Ayer's Sarsaparilla.
Inside of two months, I was able to walk
without a cane. In three months, my limbs
began to strengthen, and in the course of a
year, I was cured. My weight has increased,
to 1G5 pounds, and I am now able to do my
full day's work as a railroad blacksmith."

Death of Father Mesplie.
Many people in The Dalles will re
tnenber Father Mesplie, for many years
a resident of The Dalles. His death oc
curred in Grass Valley, California, No
vember 20ih. Father Mesplie was the
brother of Tbeo. Mesplie.he well-known
fruit raiser, whose farm is on Mill Creek.
Father Mesplie was a well-known figure
in the early pioneer history and his
death will be noted wherever the early
history of the Northwest is known. In
the following sketch of his life, which is
taken from the Monitor, it is stated that
ho came to The Dalles in 1856. This is
a mistake, for ho was known to have
been here in 1851 and '52 and poEsibly
earlier.
Rev. Father Mesplir, who died at
Grass Valley, Calif., on the 20th of laet
month, was one of the pioneer mis
sionaries among the Indians on the
Pacific coast. Father Mesplie was born
in France on the 25th .of May, 1824.
Ho received his education at Carcasaone,
France. In 1846 at the solicitation of
Right Rev. Bishop Blanchard of Oregon,
Father Mesplie and several others left
France for the purpose of doing mission
ary work among the Indians of Oregon.
He first labored among the Chinooks.
In 1856 he was sent to The Dalles, and
founded there the mission ot St. Peter.
Here Father Mesplie labored among the
Wisrams. Wascos. Umatillas. Cavuses.
Wall alas and other tribes until the year
laoa. wnen the great mining excite
ment broke out in that year in Idaho
Father Mesplie, in companv with two
Indians, left The Dalles and arrived at
what is now Boise City. Here he la
bored with marked success, and Boon
established many churches and converts
throughout the country.
When the Modoc war broke ont Presi
dent Grant appointed Father Mesplie
and DeSmet to settle the difficulty
existing among the Modocs. So suc
cessful were their efforts that President
Grant appointed Father Mesnhe cban
lain of the army stationed at Fort Boise,
Idaho. Here he remained until he
was retired on account of old age
Father Mesplie is the author of the
book "Thirty-five Years Missionary
Labor in the Rocky Mountains," now
printed in Paris. The funeral took place
on the Tzaar ult. Kcquiescal in pace.
A. E. Kilpatrick, of Fillmore, Cal.,
bad the misfortune to have his leg
caught between a cart and a stone and
badly ' brnieed. Ordinarily he would
have been laid up for two or three weeks,
but eayB: "After using one bottle of
Chamberlain's Pain Balm I began to
feel better, and in three days was entire
ly well. The peculiar soothing qualities
which Chamberlain's Pain Balm po-
seeses I have never noticed in any other
liniment. I take pleasure in recom
mending it." This liniment is also of
great value for rheumatism and lame
back. For sale by Blakeley & Houghton,
Druggist.
Next Tuesday evening Col. James
Jackson TJ. S. A. will deliver a lecture
at the Congregational church upon the
"Pueblos." The subject is a yery inter
esting one and Col. Jackson, who has a
record for fighting Indians which any
man might envy .handles it in a masterly
manner. This will be the second lecture
in the winter course and the house
should be crowded. Col. Jackson is a
very entertaining speaker.

None Bat Ayer's at the 'World" Fair.
Ayer's Sarsaparilla enjoys the extra'
ordinary distinction of having been the
only blood purifier allowed on exhibit at
the world's fair, Chicago. Manufact
urers of other earsaparillas sought by
every means to obtain a showing of their
goods, but they were all turned away
under the application of the Tula for

world's fair authorities intavorof Ayer's

Ayer's Sarsaparilla Is not a - patent
