ALLEN THURMAN DEAD
The "Old Eoman" Expired
at Columbus Today.
HIS DEATH WAS UNEXPECTED
A Fall Sustained Borne Weeks Ago
lie Never Recovered From the
Shock to HMNenoai
By tern.
Columbus, O., Dec. 12. Allen G.
Thurman died at 1 :15 today. The death
of Thurman was a painful shock to the
general public here. The last reports
from him before today were to the effect
that he was doing finely. The Thurman
residence is about a mile from the center
of town. Absolutely no other informa
tion came with the announcement of his
death save that it occurred at 1:15
p. m.
The ' immediate cause ' of death was a
fall he sustained some weeks ago, from
the effects of which it was thought lie
had partially, at least, recovered. - He
was 82 years old on the 13th of last Nov
ember, and bad it not been for the acci
dent a month ago he might have lived a
number of years. - He has not been able
to leave home for1 over a year, bat he
could walk about the bouse without as
sistance, could read, and retained much
of the power of hie once vigorous mind.
The shock of the accident, more than
the actua'. physical injuries, seemed to
impair his bold upon life.

fully ascertain the damage done the Ger

steamer Cambria yesterday, which re
sulted in the sinking of the latter vessel,
until she has been placed in the dry-
cock. In addition to the large hole, 9
feet by 7, which was stove in the bow of
the Germanic above the water mark, a
second hole b as, been discovered right
through the bow of the steamship two
feet iu -diameter. The Germanic's stern
is also damaged.
"White Star officials decided to dispatch
the Adriatic, of their line, to New York
tonight with the steerage passengers of
the Germanic and the saloon passengers
who may be desirous ot taking passage
in her. '
The Cambria is lying in a dangerous
position in the track of vessels. Her
fore-castle is visible at low tide.
To the Rescue of Dnrrant.
' San Fbancisco, Dec. 12. Durrant will
not go to San Queutin just yet. Once
more the supreme court has come to the
rescue of the murderer, and Judge Mur
phy has been advised by Chief Justice
Beatty not to perservere in his refusal to
grant a stay of execution. The warrant
for Durrant's execution has, consequent
ly, not been given to the sheriff. Today
Chief Justice Beatty, Judge Murphy,
District Attorney Barnes and Attorneys
Dickinson and Deuprey, for the pi ison
er held a consulation, and as a result
Durrant was granted a 20 days' stay of
execution. Within the time specified
Dickinson undertook to prepare a bill of
exceptions in order to pertect his appeal
to the supreme court.

New Yobkv Dec. 12. A dispatch from
Kingston, Jamaica, says:
Some Cubans departed in rowboats
and boarded a strange steamer. They
said they were going fishing when they
got into the boats ; and, as they were
unarmed, the parties watching them
were powerless. The steamer, it is be
lieved, carries from Venezuela an exped

Geo. W.. Jenkins, editor of the Santa
Maria "Times," Cal., in speaking of the
various ailments of children said
"When my children have croup there is
only one patent medicine lever nee, and
that is Chamberlain's Cough Remedy.
It possesses some medical properties
that relieve the little sufferers immedi-
ately. It is. in my opinion, the best
cough medicine in the market." If this
remedy is freely given as soon as the
croup cough appears it will prevent the
attack. It is also an ideal remedy for
whooping cough. There is no daDger in
giving it to children, as it contains noth
