REPUBLICANS AND THE SENATE
There are indications that the repab-
leans will organize the senate, and thr.t
they will do it without any populist aid
Senator Chandler, it will be reaietr
bered, wanted a deal with the populis:
on this question, which would give the
combination five or eix majority. Along
to the present time, however, says the
Globe-Democrat, only one or two otber
republican senators have said anythirg
in favor of this scheme, and several o-.
them have talked against it. Appar
ently it never had a chance of secur:r
much republican support. The popa
lists, of course, could be relied on to
favor it. It would give them prominent
places on a few committees, and would,
in a certain sense, put them in an alii
ance with the party which is going
mn the country for the next few years,
Naturally a combination of this sort
would have treat attractions for the
populists.
After the Utah members take their
Beats, however, the republicans will
have forty-five eenators, or just half the
whole number, and it is understood that
Jones of Nevada will voluntarily lend
them a hand in the organization, and
thus give them a majority. Jones will
do this as an ex-republican, and not as
a. norjulist. He is a republican on all

questions except silver coinage, and this
as he knows, is not going to be an issue
in the present corigress. Dominance in
the senate is not very ardently desired
by any republicans at the present time.

over legislation. They would have re
sponsibility without having power.
This condition would be unsatisfactory
ot any time; but now, on the eve of a
presidential election, it will require ekill
to prevenfit from being especially bur
densome and embarrassing.
Speaker Reed is expected to steer
congress the senate as well as the
house through the dangerous places un
til after the election. He is an aspirant
for the candidacy, and for his own wel
fare, as well as for that of his party, he
will be anxious to keep the party out o!
trouble in the coming session. One o'
his tasks will be to prevent a re-opening
' of the tariff question, which would hap
pen if the threats to proposo bills put
ting wool on the dutiable list and in
creasing the duties on tin plate and
other articles are carried out. Bills of
that eort are not likely to be allowed to
come up in the house in the coming
session. They could not possibly do any
good, for the president would veto them,
and they would do harm by bringing up
the entire tariff question for discussion,
which would disturb trade, give the
democrats a chance to rally, and hurt
the republicans in 1896. The time for
the republic ;d8 to present a partisan
policy is when they get complete control
of the government in 1897.

for frontier protection as Fort Dalles was
built, and at the same time take advan
tage of the cheapening advantages of
densely populated centers. (Some of us,
who were children not long ago, remem
ber the dam on Mill creek that supplied
the power to the saw-mill which got out
the lumber used in the construction of
the houses. The remains of this dam
were removed after poor" Riley was
drowned there while trying to rescue his
uosr. which was in some way caught
among the old timbers.
Capt. Jordan had fine taste in build
ing, and Uncle Sam is supposed to have
long purse, and so it was that we
boasted of as picturesque a collection of
officers quarters as could ta found the
world over. The customary tradition of
two rooms and a kitchen" received its
usual generous mterpretat'on in army
quarters. A room is but a room, though
it may bo subdivided by any number of
eliding doors." and anv portion of the
upper stories, the upper angle of which
is cut off by the roof to ever so small
degree, does not count. It will be long
before our city has another $100,000
building in its residence quarters. We
had our little pride in the commandant's
house. It went out in a blaze of glory.
But one of Capt. Jordan's buildings is
still standing, called, we believe, the
captain's quarters. A lull reminiscence
of the old garrison will be some day an
interesting theme for our local historian.
The buildings are about through with
their usefulness ; the builder is at rest ;
the parade ground is cut up into town
lots, and grow roses and chrysanthe

La Gnnde Chronicle : The Com
mercial club is meeting with far more
encouragement than was at first antic
ipated. All of the leading business men
of the city have taken hold of the affair
with a will and the Athletic club lias
nobly responded to the recent heavy
assessment and put up their five hundred
dollars. Good, substantial business men
and enthusiastic citizens are taking hold
of theauair and will make a Euccess
of it.
Arlington Record : Mr. Jas. W. Sm'th
has a fine grove situated on the road
just south of town which he will donate
to the city to be htted tor and used as a
park provided the city will enter a con
tract to use it for that purpose. The
tract comprises about ten acres and is
already set out in trees which are large
enough for shade purposes. Mr, Smith
has spent a large sum of monev on this
particular tract of land and in turning it
over to the city will ask nothing in re
turn except a guarantee that the grove
will be fitted -and trimmed for a park
and that it will be kept in a good state
of preservation.

la yesterday a dispatches was an
nounced the death of Captain Thomas
Jordan, at one time in the regular army,
and later in the Confederate eervice,
Captain Jordan was stationed in The
Dalles at the time the military post wfs
here, and his death has caused a frier, d
of The Chronicle to write the following
reminiscent article, which will be of in
terest to those who wish to learn of tl e
early history of The Dalles :
The death of Captain Jordan should
be of more than passing interest to us in
this vicinity, he being quarter-master at
the post of Fort Dallea during the erec
tion of the bnilding which succeeded the
first log huts that were temporarily put
up. If he who makes two blades of
grass grow where one grew before, is
worth v of commendation, Capt. Jordan
might bo forgiven many subsequent
sins. It was he who sowed over the
bluff around the government spring the
seeds of white clover, the sods of which
have helped to st-.rt many a lawn in our
city, and some of which still flourish
where they have not been extirpated by
the spade of improvement.
Along with thie, the-horses of the cav
alry regiment turned the sward of tl e
native grass growing on their exercise
ground into a desert, which increases
yearly. But this was not the fault of
Capt. Jordan, nor was he to blame for
the charge of extravagant expenditure
which was often brought against him.
It is not easy to build well and inexpen
sively when carpenteis are paid $10 a
day in gold, and when planing mills are
not, but every stroke in the construction
has to be made by the strong hand of
