B COBEO LIFE SAVED By ths Persistant Use of er's Sarsaparilla "I was troublitl fur years with it sore on my knee, wlii;lr several physicians, who treated nu called a -cancer, assuring- mo lliat iiotliiui? could be done to save my life. As a last resort, I was induced to try Ayer's Sarsaiari!!a, and, after tak ing a number of bottles, the sore began to disappear and my general health improve. I persisted in this treatment, until the sore was en tirely healed. Since then, I use Ayer's Sarsaparilla occasionally as a tonic and bl god-purifier, and, in deed, it seems as though I could not keep house without it." Mrs. S. A. Fields, Blooiufield, la. Tho Councilman Prom the Flrlt WrJ Send In his Resignation--It la Laid on tbo Table A Report of the Council Meeting: Last Klght. . The city council met in adjourned ses sion last evening and If the amount of time consumed were the eole judge of its importance, few sessions have been os weighty as this one. It was nearly 11 o'clock when a motion to adjourn was carried. When the roll was' called the following were present, besides Mayor Menefee, Councilman A. R. Thompson, M. T. Nolan, G. C. Eshelman, R. E. Saltmarshe, T. F. Wood and S. S. Johns. The meeting opened with a genuine sur prise in the shape ot the resignation of Councilman R. B. Hoed. The letter of resignation had been handed to the re corder in the afternoon and when read before tho councilmen ran as follows : The Dalles, Or.. Nov. 7, 1895. To the Honorable Mayor and City Council of xne cranes, ur. Gentlemen: 1 hereby tender yoa my resignation as councilman for tbo first ward of this city. Thanking you for your kindness and courtesy to me while l was a memoer ol your honorable body. l remain, l ours Kespectlully, R. B.Hood. After the surprise occasioned by the resignation had subsided a motion was made and seconded that the resignation oe accepted, Later this motion was withdrawn and another one carried to the effect that the resignation be laid on the table nntil the next meeting. As can be seen by the letter no reasons are assigned by Mr. Hood for his resignation and none have been advanced by way of explanation. The resignation was en tirely unexpected by the other members of the council. The select committee appointed at the last meeting to look after the sewer question reported through Dr. Eshelman that Mr. Cran dall bad been appointed to furnish speci cations. That gentleman being in at tendance stated the specifications for the building ot the sewer, which were discussed at great length by the members of the council. Finally no action was taken and the matter of the sewer was left in about the same con dition as it was before the agitation be gan. At this point in the proceedings Mar shall Blakeney fell asleep and after being awakened a motion to adjourn was made but received no second. A motion was then made by Mr. Thompson that the present committee act in connection with Mr. Ross and Mr. Wood to lay plans for the sewer system, but as the motion received no second it was not brought before the house. As the hour was growing late and there seemed little ehance of accomplishing anything dur ing the remainder of the session the councilmen wound their watches, passed a motion to adjourn and went home. A gentleman standing on the Regula tor dock last night and watching the long line of passengers coming down I he gang plank, said : "The boat is the best investment any community ever made. It is a pleasure to come down to the dock in the morning and see the steamer start away loaded with the products of these inland counties and in the evening watch it come to the dock crowded with merchandise and the decks black with passengers" The business done by the D. P. & A. N. Co. this fail is es pecially gratifying. The boat is carrying large loads of freight and passengers and there eeems to be no imminent diminu tion in the traffic. Last night the Reg ulator had a Harge miscellaneous cargo on board, including almost every thing from baby carriages to coffins. The Salvation Army had a large crowd attendant npon its festival last evening. The building was packed till every nook and corner was crowded with people. i . . . . . uue a numoer oi recruits were sworn in, after which a farewell was taken of Miss Addie Steel, who left on this morn ing's train for Tacoma where she will enter the army training 6chool. She has been one of the most zealous in the army in The Dalles. A coffee supper wound up the evenings pleasant enter tainraent. Marshal Blakeney, who in his spare moments acts as 'street commissioner, has been supervising the improvement of the road leading through Thompson's addition. He has had a gang of men smoothing the rough places and filling in chuck holes. The improvement is a needed one, and those who are com pelled to drive over the read will be grateful. Mr. A. A.
