and was otherwise badly hurt by a horse
falling on him.
Mrs. Condon of Cherry creek was
among the visitors Friday.
Misses Bertha snd Laura Kelsay were
the guests of Mrs. Wallace Friday and
Saturday.
Mr. Grant Ashby and family, Boyd
Ashby and family and Doc Kimsey and
family, all of Lower Antelope, were in
town Friday.
Newton Burgess of Antelope was visit
ing our uillage Saturday.
Mr. and Mrs. McAllister of The Dalles
passed through town Thursday on their
way to Mitchell, where Mr. McAllister
has extensive stock interests.
Mr. and Mrs. Richard Hinton of Bake
Ovea spent a couple of days visiting
friends in Antelope.
Miss Kate Cooper of The Dalles, a
former teacher at Antelope, was in town
Friday renewing old acquaintances and
making new ones.
Miss Harrison-of Forest Grove was
visiting a few daye in Antelope.
Mr. and Mrs. C. C. O'Neal of Muddy
station was in town Fridav.

He was hurt, but not seriously. Mr.
Will Johnson has also returned from
Rufus.
Mr. A. M. Creed and familv have
moved to Hood River, where they in
tend to upend the winter.
All enjoyed themselves at the- wood
chopping.
Mr. G. L. Carroll's school was out
Friday.
Rev. Dennison delivered a good ser
mon at No. 52 Sunday.

A quiet meeting was held in this city
yesterday, so it is said, which several
foreign capitalists attended. The
meeting was held to discuss the matter
of building a railroad' into Klickitat
county, and steps will be taken, it is
said, to ascertain the amount of grading
required to build a road from Columbus
to Goldendale, and the probable cost
that euch an undertaking would entail
The gentlemen who were present at the
meeting represent a great amount of
Scotch capital, and came to The Dalles
seeking investment. Their names are
Col. G. Howard Baker, C. Sydney Ha
ward, G. H. B. Smythe and D. Mc Rich
ards. All but the last named gentle'
man went East on last night's train
Mr. Richards stopped in The Dalles,
where he will remain for some time
It is said some interesting developments
may be expected in the near future.
Someone has been telling Editor Ire
land, of the Observer, that tne portage
road between Columbus and Chipman's
Pocket, below The Dalles, will surely be
built by the time the cascade canal will
be open for traffic. At the same time
there will be built at least one steamer for
the upper river, with connections to
Portland and Astoria. This enterprise
has been hanging fire for a long time.
and the people of Eastern Oregon would
be glad to see some actual work done
upon the line, which would be a founda
tion for a belief in the completion of
the undertaking. That the road would
pay big revenues there is no question.
It is rumored also that the capitalists
who own the Washington and Columbia
River Railway known as the Hunt
system are interestel in the scheme.

From Far Away Ceylon.
I have received diiect from the Island
of Ceylon a large consignment of its
justly celebrated teas. The extraordin
ary success which has attended the grow
ing of the tea plant in Ceylon is phenom
enal. Ten or twelve years ago a few
planters experimented growing tea,
(the coffee crop, for which .the island
was formerly famous, being entirely de
stroyed by a blight) with the result that
Great Britain alone consumes annually
190,000,000 pounds of these teas which
would be a small matter to what would
be consumed in our country, when
Americans realize the splendid qualities
of Ceylon. These teas are prepared by
modern machinery and picked by the
natives with gloved hands and are in
comparable in their strength, purity and
flavor.
Economy is also a most important
factor in the use of these teas ; one pound
being equal in strength to two pounds of
China, it is only necessary to use half
the quantity you would of any other.
To make good tea-is a very simple
matter.. Use an earthenware teapot and
pour on the water as soon a9 it boils.

which has been previously boiled should
