The new road proposition is getting
stronger as time goes on apace. The
subscription grows larger, and now less
than $500 remain to be raised. The
farmers believe that the price paid for
wneat at Ine Dalles will attract nearly
all of Shermau county's wheat another
year, unless the O. R. & N. make con
cessions to hold their trade. The D. P,
& A. N. Co. have already offered their
warehouse free of charge, even knocking
off the usual forty cents per ton for
weighing, for six months, and will give
a tree pass to I'ortland to each person
who ship over their line, giving an op
portunity to farmers to get a chance at
Portland prices. The same privilege is
accorded to merchants who receive
goods over their line. Verily they are
bidding hard for Sherman county trade.
Naturally the farmers of Sherman
county do not want to co to The Dalles.
It is a lone and tedious toad at the best;
but it begins to looks as though they
would, unless some better arrangement
were made to keep them at home
Every dime the farmer can get nowa
days goes a long way, and the experi
ence be has gained during the recent
bard times reaches him to take advan
tage 01 every turn that atlords him a re
muneration.
