"Nearly forty jears sijio, after

turned gray sunt lejran falling 't
so rapidly that I was threatened
with immediate baldness. Hearing
Ayer's Hair Vigor highly spoken of.
I commenced using this prepara-

the result that I have never tried
any other kind of dressing. It stop

the scalp free from dandruff. Only
an occasional application is now

There is more Catarrh iu this section
of the country than all other diseases
put together, and until the last few
years was supposed to be incurable,
For a great many years doctors pro
nounced it a local disease, and prescrib
ed local remedies, and by . constantly
failing to cure with local treatment, pro
nounced it incurable. Science has
proven catarrh to be a constitntional
disease and therefore requires constitu
tional treatment. r Hall's Catarrh Care,
manufactured by F. J. Cheney & Co.,
Toledo, Ohio, is the only constitutional
cure on the market. It is taken inter
nally in doses from 10 drops to a tea
spoonful. It acts directly on the blood
mucous eurfaces of the system. They
offer one hundred dollars for any case it
fails to cure. Send for circulars and tes
timonials. Address.

Death of a DaiRl Officer.
Watebtown, N. Y., Aug. 21. Ezra
J. Whitaker, retired chief engineer of
the Atlantic squadron of the navy, died
at Sackett's Harbor of heart diease, aged
56.
One night when Mr. Isaac Reese was
stopping with me, eaya M. F. Hatch, a
prominent merchant of Quartermaster,
Washington, I heard him groaning. On
going to his room I found him suffering
from cramp colic. He was in such ag
ony I feared he would die. I hastily
- gave him a dose of Chamberlain's Colic,
Cholera and Diarrhoea Remedy. He was
soon relieved and the first words he
uttered were, "what was that stuff you
gave me?" I informed him. A few
days ago we were talking about the
attack and he said he was never without
that remedy now. I have used it in my
family for eeveral years. I know its
worth and do rot hesitate to recommend
it to my friends and customers. For

What Otlier Think of TJa.
The Moro Observer writes the follow
irg concerning our fair city and its pros
pects. Mr. Ireland is a pioneer of the
West and has seen cities rise and fall.
His views on the future of The Dalles
cannot fail to carr3' weight. The sug
gestions in the article are very timely.
Surely a bright day is dawning for The
Dalles. The Regulator people are pre
pared to build a mammoth dock and
warehouse, which will enable them to
retain the lion's share of business when
the river is open to the sea. Building
is booming, several fine brick and stone
structures being in contemplation, and
everything points to the rapid growth
and marked improvement of this, the
handsomest city in the Inland Empire.
The Dalles has a grand country t6 sup
port it. and when the Columbia is
opened to commerco, ila tributary terri
tory will be so largely increased as to
surprise even her bankers and local cap
italists. With the opening of the river,
even to The Dalles, additional prosperity
will attend every industry in the conn
try about us. But to secure the natural
advantages of the increased traffic The
Dalles must lay aside its local prejudice
and work for more than one wagon road
into the place. It will be many years
before Sherman county will have full
benefit of competitive rates by railway
to Portland, at least until a canal shall
open the dalles of the Columbia, and our
welfare and prosperity must, in the
meantime, depend largely upon the dis
position evinced by The Dalles people
for either a penurious or a liberal policy.
We hope to see them adopt a course
which Till advance their own interests,
mindful of the equities of prosperity
to all.
Some Fine Looking Sheep.
Last night the steamer brought to The
Dalles seventy-six fine looking bucks for
Mr. Charles Hilton. The animals were
taken to Saltmarshe's feedjyard, where
they were visited by a number of spec
tators. Mr. Hilton purchased the sheep
from J. H. Glide, an extensive stock
raiser of California, who has given the
closest attention for manv years to stock
breeding. The animals are crosses be
tween French merino bucks and Span
ish ewea and combine the thick long
staple of the latter with the large size of
the French merino. The horns are very
long and. colored black. The coloring
comes from the tar weed, which grows
extensively in the grazing lands of Cali
fornia and issues a sort of tar, which
colors everything with which it comes in
contact. In the band, which a Chkox
icle reporter visited this morning, theTe
was one which excited especial interest.
It was a fine, large French merino, as
large as a good sized bear and bearing
a very heavy fleece. These animals sell
for between $100 and $250. Mr. Hilton
will take his flock to Dufur for feeding
in a clover field there and will then
transport them to his Gilliam county
ranch. Mr. Cotter also brought up by
the Regulator last night, eighty bucks
from the same band as Mr. Hilton. The
animals all stood the trip from Califor
nia remarkably well and are now in
prime condition. This venture will be
watched with a great deal of interest by
the stock growers of Eastern Oregon, and
the influence of the new breed will un
doubtedly be felt in producing larger
sheep with longer staples of wool.
Pains in the small of the back indicate
a diseased condition of the kidneys.
Owing to the dangerous nature of the
dieases which attack those organs it is
important that measures should be
taken to remove the trouble before it
has become too firmly fixed. Prudence
would suggest the prompt use of Dr. J.
H. McLean's Liver and Kidney Balm
which has specfic action on the liver and
kidneys and will cause an early restora
tion to healthy conditions. Price $1.00

Kusslan Officers Arrested.
London, Aug. 21. The Telegraph's
correspondent says that two Russian
staff officers decenJed in a balloon near
Jaroslav, Austria, where they were ar
rested. You cannot work well unless you feel
well. No one can feel well with a dis
ordered liver or diseased kidney. Dis
eases in ' the organs should receive
prompt attention, as neglect will lead to
much mieery and sorrow. Dr. J. H.
McLean's Liver and Kidney Balm should
be taken as soon as the first symptoms
of trouble are manifest. It is well
known to all dealers in medicine as a
safe and reliable cure for diseases in the
liver or kidneys. Price $1.00 per bot

A DragEist's Setnl-Annnal Report.
Some four or five months ago the peo
ple of The'Dallee were notified of a new ;
drugstore to be opened next door to the 1
First National Bank, and almost directly
opposite A. M. Williams & Co.'s store,
The general opinion then prevailed that
two stores were "plenty, and. a third
store must therefore starve. But surely
we are yet alive, and daily assuring our
patrons, as well as the public in general,
of our success. The doctors of our pros
perous city, who are well able to judge
our work, all acknowledge the efficient
work done on their prescriptions, for
most assuredly there never jvas any
better, neater, more accurate or precise
work done in this city than is at present
done at this store.
Our stock of drugs is getting more
complete every day. As we learn the
wants of'the people, eo do we add to our
stock, never aiming to attain such an
immense quantity as to give it a chance
to get old ; but always buy in such
amounts as to enable us to order fre
quently, thereby keeping our stock al
ways in a fresh and healthful condition.
We know the drug business, and' per
chance not much else ; but we are judges
as to the quality of drugs, and therefore
must know what we sell you when you
give us a call. Come and ask for infor
mation, if nothing else.
M. Z. Donnell,

Memory is a little treacherous now
and then, and causes one to forget some
things worth remembering, unless one
has an experience like that which came
to Mr. D. E. East, Moffatt'a Creek, Va.,
who says "I had been suffering for years
with a torpid liver and found no relief
until I took Simmons Liver Regulator
when I was entirely relieved of my
troubles. I never intend being without
Simmons Liver Regulator."
Sensational Report Denied.
Washington, Aug. 21. There is no
foundation for the story set by the
United Press last night that it has been
the intention of the administration to
send Fleet Admiral Bunce to seize the
City of Havana in order to force the pay
ment of the Mora claim. Officials of the
state and navy departments deny it
absolutely.

London, Aug. 21. A Singapore letter
to the Times states that consequent up
on the legislative retention of the silver
guilder at the . old value, which are
about double the intrinsic value in the
Netherlands, coining factories hayebeen
established in China, and the export of
the guilders thence yields a handsome
profit. It is estimated that 2,000,000,000
of such counterfeit coins are already in
circulation, and the evil threatens to in
crease. Mr." C. G. Strong, principal of the
public schools at Anderson, Cal., says:
"I have ueed Chamberlain's Pain Balm
and have found it an excellent remedy
for lameness and slight wounds."
Lameness usually results from a sprain,
or other injury, or from rheumatism, for
which Chamberlain's Pain Balm is es
pecially intended and unequalled. It
affords almost immediate relief and in a
short time effects a permanent cure.
