Impressiuns of an Kaatern Traveller.
A friend of a member of The Chron
icle force, who is . travelling in tho
Northwest, has written a letter which
gives some of the impressions received
daring the trip. The writer has an ar
tistic temperament and sees the beauties
of nature with an artistic eye. The fol
lowing are some portions of the letter:
Among the facts concerning the Ore
gon country, in the which I i.ra favorably
impressed, is the absence of the insect
peats, which pervade too many districts
further east. What a devastating plague
is that growth of the white mountain
grasshoppers in Minnesota! They have
been gradually increasing there during
the last three years. The local editors
and news-gatherers told me that they
were first noticed in the Red River val
ley, and in Pine and Chisago counties,
where they are now most numerous.
They were very few in number,' and
caused no alarm three years ago. They
planted their eggs undisturbed. Next
season there were more of them. This
season there are countless millions, and
in the sections in which they have beeu
bred they threaten the absolute destruc
tion of the crop.
Further west, as I was looking at some
lands near the gateway to the Yellow
stone National Park, a fluttering eome
thing like a big, black fly settled au in
stant on my hand. I felt a prick like
that of a pin, brushed the fly away and
a little, red stream of blood spurt up
from my 'hand. The gnat, as it had
rested, had bored through the skin and
flesh. I did not visit the Yellowstone
Park because I was told I do not know
how truly that the air there was full of
these winged dragons, that passengers
and tourists are carried so swiftly from
point t' point to escape these blood
suckers, tiist there is no opportunity to
watch or enjoy the gevsers.

beauty of tbe ecenery along the O. R. &
N. Where is there in the United States
any rivt-r that combines the blue breadth
of the Columbia; its so. picturesque
river and mountains; its gardens and
orchards; its fresh inspiring pine-pet-fumed
atmosphere ; its musical cascades,
with the absence of swamps, moequi-

toes, profaning crowd?, prettiness of
view and tbe like?
Lying at ease within mv curtained hed,
I watch the moon-lit landscape glimmer by
Soft-shadowed meadows, and the hill- that lie
Around them, with a misty foliage spread.
Towns silent and adream, and overhead !
A sombre sky stirs with such a errace
As flushed uncertainly the puliid face
Of Jairus' daughter rising fro:n the dead.
Far off Mount Ranier swims into the view,
Its mist-hung summit towering over all; '
Tbe sun swings low upon the mountain's crest,
Against a sky that burns to orange bue;
And for a moment, like a silvei ball.

Some four or five months ajro the peo
ple of Tbe Dalles were notified of a new
drugstore to be opened next door to the
First National Bank, and almost directly
opposite A. M. Williams & Co.'s store,
The general opinion then prevailed that
two stores were plenty, and a third
store must therefore 6tarve. But surely
we are yet alive, and daily 'assuring our
patrons, as well as the public in general,
of our success. The doctors of our pros
perous city, who are well able to judge
our work, all acknowledge the efficient
work done on their, prescriptions, for
most assuredly there never was any
better, neater, more accurate or precise
work done in this city than is at present
done at this store.
Our stock of drugs is getting more
complete every day. As we learn the
wants of the people, so do we add to our
stock, never aiming to attain such an
immense quantity as to give it a chance
to get old ; but always buy in such
amounts as to enable us to order fre
quently, thereby keeping our stock al
ways in a fresh and healthful condition.
We know the drug business, and per
chance not much else; but we are judges
as to the quality of drugs, and therefore
must know what we sell you when you
give us a call. Come and ask for infor

Refrigerator car, 31956, which left
The Dalles July 25th, oyer the O. R. &
N. Co. and Short Line, has beeu heard
from. It was loaded with peach plums
and email fruits, and from here was
billed to Chicaeo, which place was
reached in six days after leaving The
Dalles, The Chicago market was found
glutted with fruit, and after a day's de
lay, the car was re-shipped to New
York. In ten days from The Dalles it
reached the metropolis. The fruit was
in excellent condition, and found a
ready sale. This experience demon
strates that fruit can be shipped from
Oregon to anywhere, and next season
the amount of shipments will be greatly
increased.
One night when Mr. Isaac Reese was
stopping with me, says M. F. Hatch, a
prominent merchant of Quartermaster,
Washington, I heard him groaning. On
going to his room I found him suffering
from cramp colic. He was in Buch ag
ony I feared he would die. I hastily

soon relieved and the first words he
uttered were, "what was that stuff you
gave me?" I informed him. A- few

Resolutions of Regret.
The following resolutions regarding
the death of . Mr. George H. Clacking,
who perished in the Pendleton fire,
reached Thb Chronicle office yesterday
too late far publication. Mr. Clacking
was well known to quite a number of
Dalles residents.

wisdom, to call to the supreme lodge of
all lodges our late brother and secretary,
George H. Clacking; and

noble character, aa upright man, an un
flinching friend, a true Eik, therefore

grievou3 loss by his, to mortal eye9, on-
timely demise in the flower of his young
manhood, when "sustained and soothed
by an unfaltering trust," buoyed by am

ter, he was fairly on the high road to
