    NOT A SICK DAY
Fcr Over Thirty Years!
BESTLT OF USING
AYER'SPILLS
" Ayer's Cathartic Pills for over thirty
years have kept ine in good health,
never having had a sick day in all that
time. Before I was twenty I snffered
almost continually as a result of coiv
Kt.ipiition from dyspepsia, headaches,
neuralpria, or boils and other eruptive
diseases. When I became convinced
4 . V I

that nine-tenths of ray troubles were
caused by constipation, I began the use
of Ayer's Pills, with the most satisfac
tory results, never having a single
attaek that did not readily yield to this
remedy. My wife, who had been an
invalid for years, also began to use
Ayer's Pills, and her health was quickly
restored. With my children I had no
ticed that, nearly all their ailments were
preceded by constipation, and I soon
had the pleasure of knowing that with
children as with parents, Ayer's Pills,
if taken in season, avert all danger of
sickness." II. Wbttstein, Byron, 111.

McClure's for August.
The first of Anthony Hope's new
series of Zenda stories, in McCIures
Magazine for August, reciting a heroic
love pissage between the beautiful Prin
cess Osra and brave Stephen the Smith,
is most charming. "The girl was young
and the dream was sweet," and the story
is in full accord with these attractive
conditions. The new Jungle story by
Kipling is also notable. Only one or two
of the previous Jungle stories approach
it in strength and ingenuity. It telle
how Mowgli, under the shrewd direction
of Kaa, the rock python, lured the Bed
Dogs of the Dekkan, whom the Jungle
feared above all other creatures, to a de.
etruction so complete that not one was
left to tell the tale. In the same num
ber are a etory by Stanely J. Weymau,
wherein good, hearity justice finally
overtakes an oppresiye tax-gatherer;
and a California story by Bret Harte,
Miss Tarbell supplies a very interesting
account of Bishop John II, Vincent and
bis work in founding and developing the
Chautaqua Assembly, and also of the
wonderful growth and usefulness of that
institution. Numerous portraits and
other pictures accompany the paper.
The life of the circus preformer, as it
shows itself behind the scenes, is the
subject of an illustrated article by Cleve
land Moffett. Moltke's manner of carry
ing on war is described by the English
war correspondent, Archibald Forbes,
from the writer's own observation of
Moltko through the Franco-Prussian
war, and from conversations which he
himself held with Moltke on the subject.
In illustration of the article there are
historic battle scenes and some interest
ing; portraits. The romantic story of the
robbing of the Northampton (Mass.)
Bank of upwards of a million dollars in
money and securities, and of the long
pursuit and ultimate conviction of the
robbers, is related from the records of
the Pinkorton detective bureau.

The country surrounding The Dalles
has never been extolled as very suitable
for bicycles and the Creator -never in
tended it for a race track. But whee!s
seem to go everywhere and mountain
steepness seems to offer no hindrance for
the wheelist. Yesterday afternoon
Douglas Dufur left The Dalles about 1
o'clock and rode to Hartland, on the
other side of the Klickitat mountains,:
and returning reached The Dalles shortly -after
G o'clock. The distance covered
was twenty-five miles and Mr. Dufur;
stopped to transact some business at
eeveral places along the way. A great
part of the trip be had to walk and pus
the bicycle up the hill. People, wh
have said wheeling would be impractica
ble in this mountainous country will
have to change their minds.
