    AN OUTING.
Floating Iown tns Colombia by Night
An Interesting- Account of
Novel Trip.
To the Editoh : It was about 7 o'clock
in the morning of July 16 when we pushed
our little boats ont in the Columbia and

the river. There were ten in the party.
Shortly after rounding Crate's point the
UD-stream wind beean to blow and we
were compelled to seek the nearest
harbor. On a sand covered rock our
party was compelled to remain till even
ing. When the wind died away suffic
iently we made a fire and began our
camp life. In the quiet of the evening
we again embarked, and this time a
drift sail kad been arranged so during
the night we went quietly floating down
the river, singing songs that echoed be
tween the high, mountains along the
river. But at last all became quiet, and
only the two captains, Brown and Bun
nell remained at their post. The rest
found quarters in the bottoms of the
boats.
About eleven o'clock the wind again
began to blow and the waves to roll
"mountain" high. We quickly made
for land but Washington's rocky shore
failed to furnish us a landing till many
attempts bad been made. At last we
got into a little cove where our boats
could be protected from the fierce storm,
and all went om shore in the darkness.
fire was built and we dried our clethes
and blankets which were ringing wet.
The light of the fire showed us our
reluge, and as we looked in saw a pile
'.. jof shifting sand ten or twelve feet high,
and a few feet away a bluff of rocks
leaving an open space of only a few feet.
Over the upper end of this open space a
sail was hunt? to prevent part ot the
wind from striking us, and in this condi
tioa after vainly watching for sometime
all of the party but one were overcome
with fatigue and fell asleep. It was well
that a guard remained, for the sparks
from the fire carried by the fierce wind
set fire to the blankets and it required
watchfulness to keep the camp from
burning.
When the early dawn came stealing
over the hills we left our harbor of
refuge and again drifted down the
stream remembering the old saying that
"any port in a storm was a refuge.
The next landing was at Klickitat where
we remained through the day and at
evening crossed over to McClure's and
camped for the night. The next day
we sailed to Maior creek and passing
down the river reach Mosier a little be
fore dark. The next morning found us
at Hood River, after the best sail of the
trip. We purchased more provisions
and a hat for one of the party who had
lost his during the wind, and then
crossed over to Underwoods. There we
spent the day and last Saturday morn
ing we sailed into the beautiful waters
of the Little White Salmon, where we
pitched what was supposed to be a per
manent camp; but the waters of the
stream,' the birds of the air, and tbe
bushes of the land were not ' willing to
furnish supplies we wanted, and we
again broke camp yesterday morning,
Two of the party returned to The Dalles
on the noon train somewhat rough-look'
ing after going through su&h trying ex
periences bat glad, now that they were
over, that we had enjoyed the few days
together. The rest of the party sailed
on down to find some pleasant camping
place. Voyagik
Wasco County Cbm Decided.
The supreme court, which has been in
session at Pendleton handed down de
cisions in some important cases which
were appealed from this county.
The T. G. Mitchell vs. O. D. Taylor
case was the one in which the most in
terest was taken and its outcome has
been watched with close attention by
lawyers in The Uaues. The case was
reversed and a new trial ordered. Judge
Wolvertoh delivered the opinion. The
statement of facts, as given in the decis
ion, is that D. B. Cornell purchased
stock on installments, in the Columbia
River Fruit Company, through the de
fendant who was president, the defend
ant agreeing to repurchase the .stock
when demanded. The stock was trans
ferred to the plaintiff before the second
payment. Mitchell demanded repur
chase Dy the defendant, which was
refused. The plaintiff executed transfer
and delivered it to the defendant and
brought an action for the purchase price
The plaintiff was nonsuited, the lower
court holding that n demand to repur
chase bad been proved. The supreme
com t opinion holds that proof of delivery
of the transfer was proof of the demand
and the case should have been given to
the jury. .
The case entitled James Cameron, ap
pellant vs. Wasco County, respondent,
was reversed in an opionion by Judge
Moore. This action was concerning a
' county road and had been through the
county and circuit courts and finally
taken to the supreme court.
, The judgment of the lower court in
the case of Johnston Bros., respondents,
vs. Joseph Barillo, defendant, and Brown
and Jones, appellants, was affirmed.
Judge Moore read the opinion. Johnston
began an action against Barillo and had
some grain attached. Brown and Jones
came in with a laborer's claim for thresh
ing and sought to attach the property.
Johnston Bros, objected to this latter
claim and alleged that it was a contrac
tor's and not a laborer's claim, and that
it had been paid by a promissory note
from Joseph Barrilo and accepted by
Brown and Jones. The court below held
that the claimants should establish their
demand by judgment, and as this was
not done the claim was rejected.
Very bad policy to neglect symptoms
of trowble in tbe kidneys. If allowed to
develop they cause much suffering and
sorrow. Bright's Disease, Diabetes and

any disease or weakness of the kidneys.

CONCERNING PIANOS.

aee te tbe
Chlcaeo Musical News.
The following advertisement has been
given a prominent position in the daily
papers of Washington, D. C, and has
been printed in the Chicago Musical
News and the American Hebrew News,
of Portland. We desire to call the atten
tion of tbe public to it.
The unfairness of the assertions it con
tains needs no emphasizing, for they
will appear at. once to the sense of right
inherent in every legitimate dealer in
pianos all over the country :
Next Tuesdav will be a special bar-
Grain dav on pianos at our store. We
have found some grand bargains in new
Uorizht Pianos (not the celebrated Kim
ball pianos), ana propose to give me
public a chance to secure new pianos
next Tuesday at manufacturers' whole
sale prices.
The Drices Tuesday next for these new
elegant Upright pianos will be only $149
and $159 each. Part time given it de
sired. These pianos will be on exhibit
at our store all day Monday, but no sales
will be made from this lot until Tuesday,
and will continue that day only.
W. W. Kimball, Do.,
Metzerott Building, Cor. 12th and F. Sts,
The Kimball Company may regard
such methods as fair and honorable, but
they are open to the severest criticism in
attempting to destroy the piano trade in
Washington after many years of honor
able work to promote it.
Tbe unfairness of the card lies in the
assertion that the pianos which are to
be sold at sacrificial prices are not made
by the Kimball company. Therein is
the poison.
This whole scheme is perpetrated to
give the Kimball pianos a position to
which their merits do not entitle them.
Although the Kimball advertisement de
clares these are not Kimball pianos
which are to be slaughtered it does not
enhance the value of their own instru
ments.
Those who are familiar with the Kim
ball pianos know perfectly well that the
makers can afford to sell them at just
such ruinous prices as are quoted for
other instruments in their possession
Washington.
What is there in the Kimball piano to
justify this step? Nothing.
The Kimball company make one of the
cheapest pianos in the United (States.
And after the Kimball piano is made
ready for the market it is not then worth
a place above a low rank.
Wlien you come to think of it, can you
name any genuine, firttclait home that it
telling the Kimball pianot T
The Kimball managers may consider
they have made a brilliant stroke, but
thev are merelv usinsr eieantic power to
foist a cheap make on 'he market.
The Question is also one of a broader
conception than mere local purview,
Such advertisements as these cut at the
root of the piano industry for they mis
lead private buyers.
We 6hall not let this subject stop here,
It is fraught with grave danger -to the
entire trade, and, although the Kimba.ll
company is composed of schrewa scnem
ers, they may find they have far over
stepped the bounds of legitimate busL
ness dealing.
