JL Bale For OTer 1 2,000 Today.
The wool clip for 1895 has been sold
for the most part, and the larger portion
of it has been shipped away from our
warehouses. With it went from three
to four million pounds of grease and
good Oregon dirt. For the shipping of
that grease and dirt to Boston we have
paid from $28,000 to $30,000 to the trans
portation companies. If a cleansing
establishment could be paid one-half of
what it would save on freight and could
have for one season the cleansing of the
entire clip marketed at this place, it
would pay for its plant and have some
thing left, unless a plant wpuld cost
more than we suppose.
We ship our wool to New England and
the middle states, pay the freight on it
and ship the manufactured goods back,
paying another tribute to transportation
companies, and usually paying,.in addi
tion to freights, a profit to the jobber;
nevertheless we have here all the condi
tions requisite to the cleaneing, weaving
" and manufacturing. The Dalles should
have these industries; who can suggest
the way to get them.?
COUNTY INDEBTEDNESS SHOULD
BE FUNDED.
On the courthouse steps today Deputy
Khwiff Kellv offered for sale the two
farms known as the old Lair Hill and
W. H. Wilson places, on Mill creek.
The sale was a sheriffs one and done in
pursuance of decrees in the cases of J,
C. Flanders vs. O. D. Taylor, Sarah K.
Taylor, J. A. JohnBon, Caroline Breese,
John Berger, T. O. Mitchell, and state ot
Oregon as trustee for the common
school fund of Wasco county. The
amount of the judgment, with interest,
against the two places was $8986.02 and
it was not expected that there would be
much active bidding, but in this the
calculations were wrong. J. C. Flanders
bid $4648.48 for the Wilson place and
$4801.54- for the Hill farm. C. W,
Dietzel and Mr. Wilson, as attorney for
Jos. A. Johnson, joined in the bidding
which became quite brisk. The final
bid for Mr. Johnson was the highest and
he became the purchaser ot both places.
The Wilson farm selling for $6o00 and
the Hill place for $6236. The money
was readv in French & Co.'e bank to
make the payments and the matter soon
aHjuated, satisfying the FlanderB judg
tnent.
These two farms are among the best
fruit lands in Wasco county and well
improved. The price paid today repre
sents less than one-half their real value,
Mr. Tavlor has been the owner of both
farms for several years. Ihis sale is
one of tne largest ever neld Dy the
sheriff.

FOR SALE BY BLAKELEY & HOUGHTON.
There probably has never before been
a time when there has been so much idle
capital seeking safe investments in
Wasco county as at present. The low
price of wool and wheat during the past
two years has withdrawn much capital
heretofore invested in these industries,
The funding of the debt of the city has
released a considerable amount and
some other local causes have tended to
release money from employment. Had
the county followed the example of the
city and funded its debt, as it might
have done by act of the legislature,
there would have been no trouble, in
placing its bonds among local capitalists
to as equally Rood advantage as did
Dalles City, thereby saving about $2000
per annum to the taxpayers. If Wasco
. countv is properly represented in the
next legislature this will be done.

The great debate iu t-hicago promises
to be one of the notable meets of recent
years. The champions of the two finan
cial beliefs have put forth their gladia
tors and the combat is to be a merciless
one. Every word the two men utter
will be read the world over and the
good that results will be lasting. The
only danger in Buch a contest is that the
debaters will be prone to make personal
thrusts and wander from the main issue
into sallies of wit and sarcasm atone
anothers expense. Such proceedings
would serve to take a-vay whac influence
the debate would otherwise possess.
