    Hmwtborne Sentenced.
John Hawthorne, who has been on
trial for hie life in the United States
court at Portland, was sentenced Satur
day to five years in the penitentiary and
to pay a fine of 4100. He received just
one-half of what might have been given,
as the law provides ten years as the
maximum for penalty.- When Judge
Bellinger asked Hawthorne if he could
say anything in mitigation of his sen
tence, the young man made the follow
ing statement:
While Hawthorne and Rowe were
asleep in the tent at Warm Springs,
George Thompson, an Indian, entered
and, grasping two pistols, jumped out of
the tent. The two boys immediately
awoke and Hawthorne fired two shots at
Carpolis. believing that he was the thief
who had come into the tent to rob them.
After firing the shots' he turned, when
Carpolis shot him in the back. Haw
thorne fell and then he says Rowe shot
at Carpolis.
When Judge Bellinger asked Haw
thorne why he had not told this story
during the trial, the prisoner made no
reply. The judge remarked that the new
version of the killing would have- no
weight with him as it should have been
brought out in court so the jury could
hear it. The defendant bad had a fair
and impartial trial and ali mitigating
circumstances had been considered by
the jury and it was owing to some ex
tenuating phages that Hawthorne had
not been convicted of murder. Affidavits
from several Dalles citizens and from
Jailer Chamberlain .were read. The
jailer testified that since his incarcera
tion Hawthorne had been a model
prisoner and Detective Misner said that
it was information gathered from Haw'
thorne that lead to the arrest, capture
and conviction of Klein and Savage.
The Dalles affidavits tended to prove the
previous good character of Hawthorne.
The affidavits seemed to have an effect
on Judge Bellinger and .probably the
sentence would have been larger had
they not been admitted. This marks
the last chapter in the story of - the
Mays & Crowe robbery last summer.

Thousands of persons flounder along
for months, yes even years, suffering
from indigestion, bowel troubles and
liver disorders with their accompanying
disagreeable -symptoms, because they
think they have to. If they would take
a short course of Dr. J. H. McLean's
Liver and Kidney Balm they would soon
get rid of the miserable feeling and that
overpowering sense of weariness and in
capacity for work, would give place to
one of health, vigor and cheerfulness.
Price $1.00 a bottle. "
A tunnel claim was filed today in the
county clerk's office by Henry F. Diet
zel. The claim is situated 600 yards
east of the Newell creek water ditch,
east of the Newell and Brooks meadows,
and about sixty yards eouth of the road
leading to the meadows, and lies about
fifteen miles east of Mt. Hood.
. Very bad policy to neglect symptoms
of trouble in the kidneys. If allowed to
develop they cause much suffering and
sorrow. Bright's Disease, Diabetes and
Dropsy owe their great prevalence and
fatality to neglect of the first warning
symptom. Dr. J. H. McLean's Liver
and Kidney Balm is a certain cure for
any disease or weakness of the kidneys.

PIANOS. .
Kimball's

Entire Trade.
to
the
Chicago Musical News. .
The following advertisement hat been
given a prominent position in thtt daily
papers of Washington, D. C, and has
been printed in the Chicago Musical
News and the American Hebrew News,
of Portland. We desire to call the atten
tion of the public to it.
The unfairness of the assertions it con
tains needs no emphasizing, for they
will appear at once to the sense of right
inherent in everv legitimate dealer in
ianos all over the country:
Next Tuesday will be a special bar
gain day on pianos at our store. We
hive found some grand bargains in new
pright Pianos (not the celebrated Kim-
II pianos), and propose to give the
hlic a chance to Pfcure new pianos
ext Tuesday at manufacturers' whole
sale prices.
The prices Tuesday next for these new
elegant Upright pianos will be onlv $149
and $159 each. Part' time given if de
sired. These pianos will he on exhidit
at our storfi all day Monday, but no sales
will be made from t his lot until Tuesday,
and will continue that nay only.
W. W. Kimball. Co.,
Metzerott Building, Cor. 12th and F. Sts.
The Kimball Company may regard
such method" as fair and honorable, but
they are open to the severest criticism in
attempting to destroy the piano trade in
Washington after many years of honor
able work to promote it.
The unfairness of the card lies in the
.assertion that the pianos which are to
e sold at sacrificial prices are not made
the Kimball company. Therein is
tAe poison.
bis whole scheme is perpetrated to
give the Kimball pianos a position to
hich their merits do not entitle them.
Although the Kimball advertisement de
clares these are not Kimball pianos
which are to be slaughtered it does not
enhance the value of their own instru
ments. Those who are familiar with the Kim
ball pianos know perfectly well that the
makers can afford to sell them at just
such ruinous prices as are quoted for
other instruments in their possession at
Washington.
What is there in the Kimball piano to
justify this step? Nothing.
The Kimball company make one of the
cheapest pianos in the United States.
And after the Kimball piano is made
ready for the market it is not then worth
a place above a low rank.
When you come to think of it, can you
name any genuine, firstclass house that is
idling the Kimball pianos t
The -Kimball managers may consider
they have niade a brilliant stroke, but
they are merely using gigantic power to
faist a cheap make on he market.
The question is also one of a broader,
conception than mere local purview.
Such advertisements as these cut at the
root of the piano industry for they mis
lead private buyers.
We shall not let this subject stop here.
It is fraught with grave danger to the
entire trade, and, although the Kimball
company is composed of ech re wd schem
ers, they may find they have far over
stepped the bounds of legitimate busi
ness dealing.
