A Chicago Bnildtogr Fired Three
Times in Three Hours.
Chicago, July 5. Three unsuccessful
efforts have been made within three
hours to burn the Mecca apartment
buildings, the big flats occupying the en
tire block at Thirty-fourth and State
streets. The greatest excitement pre
vailed among occupants of the building
and crowds of people gatheied in the
street to watch the firemen.
The first fire was in the basameat, but
prompt work ky the department pre
vented further damage than was caused
by smoke.
The firemen bad only just returned to
their honses when another alarm came
in from same quarter. The second fire
was found in the baeement also. Men,
women and children ran through the
halls and into the street terror-stricken,
but the quick work of the firemen reas
sured them, and they returned to their
abodes. After the first attempt the
police were summoned, and it was while
they were being assigned to their'places
that the second fire broke out.
Two hours" later another alarm -was
sent in. This time the fire was on the
north end of the building. The firemen,
however, were at the building in a jiffy
and the blaze was extinguished A
search disclosed the fact that inflamm
able material has been placed in several
parts of the building, and the attempt at
arson was so plain that Lieutenant Bon
field sent a large detail of police to guard
the building all day. The affair will be
investigated.

The celebration was held in Tivoli del

which will be given to the support of the
American hospital. A line dinner was
served. In the afternoon the large ball
room was filled with danceis, and a
well-attended ball was held in the eve
ning. The government furnished the
military band, out of compliment to the
occasion, and an orchestra was also in
attendance;
There is more Catarrh in this eection
of the country than all other diseases
put together, and nntil the last few
years was supposed to be incurable.
For a great many years doctors pro
nounced it a local disease, and prescrib
ed local remedies, and by constantly
failing to cure with local treatment, pro
nounced it incurable. Science has
proven catarrh to be a constitutional
disease and therefore requires constitu
tional treatment. Hall's Catarrh Cure,
manufactured by F. J. Cheney & Co.,
Toledo, Ohio, is the only constitutional
cure on the market. It it taken inter
nally iu doses from 10 drops to a tea
spoonful. It acts directly on the blood
mucous surfaces of the system. They
offer one hundred dollars for any case it
fails to cure. Send for circulars and tes

CONCERNING PIANOS.
Klmballs Methods a Menace to
Entire Trade.
the
Chicago Musical News.
The following advertisement has been
given a prominent position in the daily
papers of Washington, D. C, and has
been printed in the Chicago Musical
News and the American Hebrew News,
of Portland. We desire to call the atten
tion of the public to it.
The unfairness of the assertions it con
tains needs no emphasizing, for they
will appear at once to the sense of right
inherent in every legitimate dealer in
pianos all over the country:
Next Tuesday will be a special bar
gain day on pianos at our store. We
have found some grand bargains in new
Upright Pianos (not the celebrated Kim
ball pianos), and propose to give the
public a chance to eecure new pianos
next Tuesday at manufacturers' whole
sale prioes.
The prices Tuesday next for these new
elegant Upright pianos will be only $149
and $159 each. Tart time given if de
sired. These pianos will be on exhibit
at our store all day Monday, but no sales
will be made from this lot until luesday,
and will continue that day only.
W. W. Kimball, Co.,
Metzerott Building, Cor. 12th and F. Sts.
The Kimball Company may regard
ench methods as fair and honorable, but
they are open to the severest criticism in
attempting to destroy the piano trade in
Washington after many years of honor
able work topromote it.
The unfairness of the card lies in the
assertion that the pianos which are to
be sold at sacrificial prices are not made
by the Kimball company. Therein is
the poison.
This whole scheme ia perpetrated to
give the Kimball pianos a position to
which their merits do not entitle them.
Although the Kimball advertisement de
clares these are not Kimball pianos
which are to be slaughtered it does not
enhance the value of their own instru
ments. Those who are familiar with the Kim
ball pianos know perfectly well that the
makers can afford to sell them at just
such ruinous prices as are quoted for
other Instruments in their possession at
Washington.
What is there in the Kimball piano to
justify this step? Nothing.
The Kimball company make one of the
cheapest pianos in the United States.
And after the Kimball piano is made
ready for the market it ia not then worth
a place above a low rank.
Wlien you come to think of it, can you
name any genuine, jirslclass house that is
selling the Kimball pianos t
The Kimball managers may consider
they have made a brilliant stroke, but
they are merely using gigantic power to
foist a cheap make on he market.
The question is also one of a broader
conception than mere local purvie
Such advertisements as these cut at the
root of the piano industry for they mis
lead private buyers.
We shall not let this subject stop here.
It is fraught with grave danger to the
entire trade, and, although the Kimball
company is composed of schrewd schem
ers, they may find they have far over
stepped 'the bounds of legitimate busi
ness dealing.
