London, June 26. Conservative lead
ers teem to have opened Pandora's box
of troubles in forcing tbe Rosebery gov
ernment to resign. Tbe latter bare
clearly tbe best of the situation. . Lord
Salisbury is compelled to make a cabinet
with a hostile majority, and as events
ate now tending, will be obliged to go
before the country with at least some in
dication of policy about the present
burning social question.
The news of most interest in America
is that Joseph Chamberlain baring pre
cipitated the present situation, has been
disappointed in bis ambitions. He de
manded the chancellorship of ' the ex
chequer, but Lord Salisbury refused it,
and gave him the secretaryship of state
for the colonies, which he has accepted.
This post is lower in point of official
status than the home office,, the war de
partment or the admiralit.
The fact that Lord Dufferin baa come
from Paris has excited some uneasiness
quite apart from home - politics. It
transpires that the present state of rela
tions between this country and France
it serious, if not . threatening.. It has
been suggested that Lord Dufferin has
been asked, to undertake the lord lieut
enancy of Ireland, but the fact to that
h cannot be permitted to leave Paris
until the Anglo-French relations are
much improved. -,
Late last night a report was circulated
that Mr. Chamberlain bad withdrawn
bis consent to accept the colonial secre
taryship and bad applied for the war
' office. - But his appointment to that of
fice would be immediately, challenged,
as he and bis brother are largely inter-
. ested in cartridge manufactories, which
have contracts with the government.
According to the latest information
dissolution will take place next week
The members of tbe McCarthy party
' have nearly all returned to Ireland to
make preperations for tbe struggle.
. Redmond has stated that he will contest
every seat in Ireland, which declaration
might be interpeted that he is receiving
other than Irish financial support. Mc-
Carthyite calculation is that bis party
will win three seats from Redmond and
five from Ulster toriee, while they may
themselves loose two; so that they ex
pect a net gain of six. This is provided
Healy does not raise a - flag of revolt,
which up to the present he has shown
signs of doing. "
London, June 26. Replying to Henry
Labouchere, member for Northampton
in tbe bouse of commons today, Right
Hon. Akers Douglas, the conservative
whip, said bis party was anxious for the
dissolution of parlaiment at the earliest
possible moment, and hoped to be able
to make a statement on the subject
Monday next. He moved new writs for
an election be issued in. the cases of
East Manchester, West Bristol, St
George's, Hanover Square and West
Birmingham, represented respectively
by A. J. Balfour, the new. first lord of
the treasury; Sir Michael Hicks-Beach,
chancellor of the exchequer; Gaorge J.
Goshen, first lord of the admiralty, and
Joseph Chamberlain, first secretary of
etate for tbe colonies, who have to be re
elected upon their appointment are
cabinet ministers. The mention of
Chambelain's name was received with
cries of "Judas" from the Irish benches

man insisted on going after bim, and was
lowered into the shaft, but collapsed
when be reached the bottom and .was
hauled out. Then John Thunell went
down to save the young man. He reach
ed the bottom and took hold of Mar
shall to draw him into the cage, when
be was overcome by firedamp and fell

bodies could be recovered.
Frnlt War la Chicago.
Chicago, June 26. South Water
street had another sensational develop
ment yesterday in the fight begun re
cently by the Fruit Buyers' Association
to stop California growers from selling
fruit to the peddling trade at all auction
houses.
A meeting of the association was held
and a plan formulated whereby a new
auction house and fruit exchange will be
established and kept within control of
the association. A license.to incorporate
the new concern has been secured, and
a meeting of tbe association to elect of
ficers and a board of directors will . be
held July 6. A representative has been
sent to California to confer with growers,
and from six. to 10 agents will be placed
in different parts of that state. The new
combine will be one of the most gigantic
ever formed on the fruit trade of the
West. '
The Greek and Italian peddling class
will not be allowed within the doors of
the new exchange, but what the fruit
buyers call reputable merchants will
have free access.
Nearly all large fruit firms, as well as
the grocers, are back of the new enter
prise, and abundant capital is said to be
forthcoming to give the concern practic
ally a control of the disbursement of
California fruit here.
Very bad policy to neglect symptoms
of trouble in the kidneys. If allowed to
develop they cause much suffering and
sorrow.- Bright 's Disease, Diabetes and
Dropsy owe their great prevalence and
fatality to neglect of the first warning
symptom. Dr. J. H. McLean's Liver
and Kidney Balm is a certain cure for
any disease or weakness of the kidneys.

CONCERNING PIANOS.

Chicago Musical New.
The following advertisement has been
given a prominent position in the daily
papers of Washington, D. C, and has
been printed in the Chicago Musical
News and the American Hebrew News,
of Portland. We desire to call the atten
tion of tbe public to it.
The unfairness of the assertions it con
tains needs no emphasizing, ' for they
will appear at once to the sense of right
inherent in every legitimate dealer in
pianos all over the country :
Next Tuesdav will be a special bar
gain day on pianos at our store. We
have found some grand bargains in new
Upright Pianos (not tbe celebrated Kim
ball pianos), and propose to give the
public a chance to eecure new pianos
next Tuesday at manufacturers' whole
sale prices. . '
Tbe prices Tuesday next for theee new
elegant Upright pianos will be only $149
and $159 each. Part time given if de
sired. Theee pianos will be on exhibit
at our store all day Monday, but no sales
will be made from tnis lot until Tuesday.
and will continue that day only.

The Kimball Company may regard
such methods as fair and honorable, but
they are open to the severest criticism in
attempting' to destroy the piano trade in
Washington after many years of honor
able work to promote it. - "
The unfairness of the card lies in the
assertion that the pianos which are to
be eold at sacrificial prices are not made
by tbe Kimball company. Therein is
the poison.
This whole scheme is perpetrated to
give the Kimball pianos a position to
which their merits do not entitle them.
Although the Kimball advertisement de
clares these are not Kimball pianos
which are to be slaughtered it does not
enhance the value of their own instru
ments.
Those who are familiar with tbe Kim
ball pianos know perfectly well that the
makers can afford to sell them at just
such ruinous prices as" are quoted for
other instruments in their possession at
Washington.
What is there in the Kimball piano to
justify this step? Nothing.
The Kimball company make one of the
cheapest pianos in the United States.
A nd after the Kimball piano is made
ready for tbe market it is not then worth
a place above a low rank.
When you come to think of it, can you
name any genuine, fir stclats house that is
telling the Kimball pianos t
The Kimball managers may consider
they have made a brilliant stroke, but
they are merely using gigantic power to
foist a cheap make on he market.
The question is also one of a broader
conception than mere local purview
Such advertisements as these cut at the
root of the piano industry for tney-mis-
lead private buyers.
We shall pot let this subject stop here.
It is fraught with grave danger to the
entire trade, and, although the Kimball
company is composed of schrewd schem
ers, they may find they have far over
stepped the bounds of legitimate busi
ness dealing.
