JUNE 26, 1895 OUR FOURTH OF JULY. The Dalles baa Invited the people of Ibo surrounding country to celebrate the Fourth of July with us. It be hooves the town, from the standpoint of hosts, as well as from the standpoint of business men, to see to it that no one who comes shall regret their - 'coming, xt the celebration be a rousing one, befitting the event which, we celebrate. ' The Dalles Is dependent for its pros perity, in a large degree, upon the peo ple who will be our guests. Let their welcome be such that they will appreci ate our kindly feeling toward them and know that their enjoyment is our pleas- ore. DARK CLOUD OVER THE BIO BEND COUNTRY. The Big Bend Empire, speaking of the bright prospects for an abundant harvest throughout the Big Bend coon try, says : "But across the clear field of this bright prospect one cloud still comes to cast dark shadows as it ex pands in the summer sky. That is the transportation problem." And indeed it is a dark cloud to the people of that country. Although surrounded by the grandest of rivers, they are shut in and dependent upon rail transportation after hauling their products twenty-five to fifty miles over sandy roads. With an open river, this great country, with its magnificent 'possibilities, would be favorably situated as to market, and its increasing trade would pass up and do w n the Col u m bia. . Not only will that country be bene fited beyond calculation, but the com mercial cities of Oregon Astoria, Port land and The Dalles, will compete for its trade. All of Oregon and Washing ton must stand together for the opening of the river and let "no opportunity pass to call the attention of congress to the great necessity of these improvements. THE CUBAN REVOLUTION. Interest in the Cuban revolution is Increasing throughout the United States Notwithstanding the precautions of the United States government to head off the enthusiasts, many are leaving ane" joining the revolutionists. Last Sundav Rev. J. A. .Wilson, a prominent New York clergyman, openly espoused the cause of the Cubans, and from bis pul pit eloquently denounced Spain's treat ment of Cuba. It needs very little to move Ameri cans to espouse the cause of Americans against a European government, and the time will soon come when we shall i 1 1 , giB ub cm uea npon to recognize a neighboring republic which has thrown Off a rnonarchial yoke. We sincerely hope it may be done with more grace and promptness than in the case of Hawaii. America has little use for monarchies, and we hope Cuba will toon show itself truly American.' ' . We used to pay $3.40 par ton for the transportation of wheat from-The Dalles to Portland ; we now pay for the same service $1.25, a. saving of $2.15 per ton, or over 8 cents on every bushel. During the three years and a half that the river boats have been operated the stockhold ers have received a dividend of 10 per cent, less than 3 per cent per annum npon their capital.. The producers of wheat last year. alone were benefited more than 20 per cent on the wheat marketed, and yet many farmers believe that the monied men of this city are not w-11 disposed toward them. The boat line.is a pood thing for the town; it is a good thing for the country ; and noth ing more clearly demonstrates that the interests of the town and the tributaiy country are identical than this transpor tation quest ion. Notwithstanding new and wonderful discoveries in illuminating appliances and materials, the production of petro leum for export was larger during the past year than ever before, exceeding that of 1893 by 100,000,000 gallons. The prodnction of better lights by means of electricity seems to increase instead of . lessen the demands for what almost Jems an ancient means of illuminating. 'If a New "Eng"an?er "'should 'Be told ihat bushels of cherries could "be gath ered in many of the cherry orchards iear tkis city, each single cherry of wUch would measure from 3 to S4 inches in circumference, he would say : "That's another western story of the same character as your fieb and big tree stories." But a visit to any of the orch ards along Dry Hollow or 3-Mile creek will demonstrate that such a statement would be no exaggeration. We doubt if cherries grow to greater perfection or it h finf-r flavor elsewhere in the world than in Wasco conntv. A representative of the Southern Pa cific railroad is in the city today, and made the statement that the Southern Pacific is in. the field lor trade from Eastern Oregon. The San Francisco merchants have looked with longing eyes towards getting a market for their goods in the Inland Empire, and the prospects o'f their doing so are exceed ingly bright. The wool bbsiness is also what they are after, and, if necessary to obtain it, a large warehouse will be built and a storage department oper ated. All this will be done with the aid and co-operation of the D. P. & A. N, Co. ' " " -i ''. ' ..-, ' - Military Orders. Hdqks. Third Rbgt.Ikftt.,0. N. G.) The Dalles, Or., June 25, 1895. J Orders No 8. Companies A, G, and the Hospital Corps will parade in fatigue uniform, with leggins, canteens and fatigue caps, on July 4, 1895, at the armory of com pany G, The Dalles, Or. Assemble 9:30 o'clock a. m. Field and staff officers, resident at The Dal'es, will re port to the colonel, mounted, and the non commissioned staff to the adjutant at the same hour at the headquarters office. The members of company A will pro ceed to The Dalles July 3, 1895, or prior. properly armed, uniformed and equipped for parade on July 4th. By order of Col. Thompson. H. H. Eiddell, Adjutant. The spirited team belonging to Mr. E E. Lytle added much to the excitement of last evening. Mr. Lytle was out driv mg and stopped at the Cold Storage works to attend to some business, While he was inside the horsea became impatient and started off on their own accord. The further they went the faster and . soon , they tore up Second street at the regulation runaway speed. Passing E- J. Collins & Ca.'s feed raid they thought it a place to get a meal and turned in, at the same time trying to knek a big, freight.. wagon out of the road. It was -the sauie old story of an irresistible force and an immovable body. The hordes went one on each side of the freight wagon and the tongne of the buggy was broken to splinters. The horjes were not injured nor the buggy, except the tongue, much dam aged. A very pleasant party was given yes terday afternoon by Mrs. M. Randall.Tit her home on the hill. The dav was the 35tn anniversary of Mr. and. Mrs. Ran dall's marriage and the members of the King's Daughters and Good Intent society were invited to join in the occa sion's festivities. The afternoon was passed very pleasantly in social conver- eation, after which a bountiful lunch was served. Many congratulations were given upon the auspicious occat-ion and wishes that the next thirty-five vears ould be as happy as the last thirty-five have been. A quarterly inspection of the militia will take place this evening at the armory. Col. Thompson has issued or ders to have both the staff, company G and the Hospital Corps appear at 8 o'clock, fully uniformed and equipped. The field and staff will report to the colonel, and the non-commissioned staff to the adjutant. There will doubtless be a good many yisitors to see the boys dressed up in their beet. The Dalles an the., headquarters, for this, regiment. should take a great interest in th militia and its welfare. ' . Attention G. A. R. and W. It. C. CONCERNING, PIANOS. Kimball's Methods a, Menace ... Kntlre Trade. to the Chicago Musical News. The following advertisement has been given a prominent position in the daily papers of Washington, D. C, and has been printed", in the Chicago Musical News' and the American Hebrew News, of Portland. We desire to call the atten tion of the public to it. . The unfairness of the assertions it con tains needs no emphasizing, for they will appear at once to the sense of right inherent in every legitimate dealer in pianos all over the country : Next Tuesday will be a special ban gain day on pianos at our store. We have found some grand bargains in new Upright Pianos (not the celebrated Kim hall pianos), and propose to give the public a chance to secure new pianos next Tuesday at manufacturers' whole sale prires. The prices Tiiesday next for these new elegant Upright pianos will be only $149 and $159 each. Part time given if de sired. These pianos will be on exhibit at nnr store all day Monday, but no sales will be made from t his lot until Tuesday, and will continue that day only. W. W. Kimball, Co., Metzerott Building, Cor. 12th and F. Sts. The Kimball Company may regard such methods as fair and honorable, but they are open to the severest criticism in attempting to destroy the piano trade in Washington after many years of honor able work to promote it. The unfairness of the card lies -in the assertion that the pianos which are to be sold at sacrificial prices are not made ny the Kimball company. Therein is the poison. This whole scheme is perpetrated to give the Kimball pianos a position to which their merits do not entitle them. Although the Kimball advertisement de clares these are not Kimball pianos which are to be slaughtered it does not enhance the value of their own instru ments. Those who are familiar with the Kim ball pianos know perfectly well that the makers can afford to sell them at jnst such ruinons prices as are quoted for Xther instruments in their possession at Washington. What is there in the Kimball piano to justify this step? Nothing. ' v The Kimball company make one of the cheapest pianos in the United States. A nd after the Kimball piano is made ready for the market it is not then worth a place above a low rank. ' Wlien you come to think of it, can you name any genuine, Jirstclass house that is selling the Kimball pianos t The Kimball managers may consider they have made a brilliant stroke, but tney are merely using gigantic power to foist a cheap make on he market. " The question is'also one of a broader conception than mere local - purview. finch advertisements as these cut at the root of the piano industry for they mis lead private buyers. We shall not let this subject stop here. It is fraught with grave danger to the entire trade, and, although the Kimball company is composed of ech re wd schem ers, tbey may find thev have far over stepped the bounds of legitimate busi ness dealing.
