A LITTLE RECREATION.
A little recreation is pleasant to most
people, and to many a necessity ; when
not carried to excess, so as to amount to
dissipation, it i harmless and usually
beneficial. Westerners and southerners
are somewhat Inclined to carry all
Amusements to the . extent o a dissipa
tion. This has been, and no doubt will be
for sometime, true in the agitation of
financial questions. 8o far has this gone
that many are alarmed lest, within a
Jew years, the "financial school" will
break np in a financial spree, and busi
ness, which is now slightly convalescent
after its severe attack of tariff reform,
will have a relapse, and our last condi
tion be worse than the first. It should
be borne in mind that there is little dan
ger of a free silver bill becoming a law
while Cleveland is president, and if he
lives, he and he alone, will be president
until March, 1897. After the new presi
dent is inaugurated it will require some
time to satisfy all the different free sil
verisms and silver theorists, if that can
ever be done. So there is little proba
bility of any silver legislation going into
effect before 1898. By that time the ex
uberance of the youthful West will have
somewhat worn off, the spree will be
over and a little gold cure will prepare
m to settle down to business.
We anticipate nothing more serious
than a little recreation, or at worst, a
short dissipation. Indeed, we think the
worst is already past.
MASS MEETING TONIGHT.
If the business men of the city have
amy interest in the election of city offi
cers, it will be well for them to be out in
force at the mass meeting. . It is much
easier to elect desirable officers and
councilmen, if attention is given the
matter at the nominating meeting. Tco
often the spoils-seeker and his friends,
or they who have axes to grind, control
. the nominating meeting.. If you care
anything about the city's affairs, ac'd
want to have them run your way, you
must in person give them some atten
tion, and to have your influence felt, you
must give them attention all the time,
particularly when the men who are to
run the city are to be chosen. .
This mass meeting is of about as much
importance as the election itself.
THE CHINESE RIOTS.
It seems thi.t the reported Chinese
riots are less serious than at first sup
posed. No missionaries were killed, bat
some property was destroyed, and the
obnoxious foreigners were compelled to
move on. It was limply an imitation
of American sand lotism so prevalent
on this coast a few years ago, when "the
Chinese must go'awaa the catch-word of
demagogues, and Tacoma and a few
other places made themselves ridiculous
by mobbing the Chinamen. Indeed,
China is becoming Christianized with
startling rapidity; it is now only a few
years behind the United States on this
question.
Yesterday's market report, published
in the Oregonian, quotes wool 9 to 11
cents, and Eastern Oregon 5 to 8 cents.
This indicates either that the Orego
nian's market reporter is not qnite "on
to his job," or else Portland is a very
poor wool market. Eastern Oregon
wool in the market here is selling from
82 to 10 cents, and there is more of it
sold, baled and shipped to the eastern
market from here tb an Portland dreams
of. .
It is noticeable that among the at
tendants at the financial schools which
are being now held by the Bilvermen
throughout the land, there are a great
many ex-senators, ex-congressmen and
ex-governors. We wonder whether the
fact that they got left has anything to do
with their being among the "scholars.
The Cars uf Toetb.
At 6 years of age four permanent teeth,
double teeth, the most useful teeth in
the mouth, are cut. These teeth, be
cause of the bad condition in which fre
qnently the milk teeth are found at this
time, are subjected more to the causes
of decay than any other of the perm a
nent teeth, hence special care should be
given at this time to the care of the
teeth to keep them clean. A tooth kept
clean will not decay. On the Pacific
coast there is very rarely a case where a
child has attained the age of 14 but what
baa lost' one or more of these teeth, has
bad them filled, or else the teeth or
roots of them remain in the mouth de-'
caying, ulcerating, and causing a very
bad breath ; the puss mixing with the
food goes to the stomach and does injury'
to the digestive -organs. The health of
every individual depends very much
upon the health of his or her teeth.
The time to care for the teeth, to keep
them clean, is between the age of 6 and
14. Daring this time all the permanent
teeth but the wisdom teeth are cut, and
the wisdom teeth are of little nse to
man. But no one can well afford to lose'
any one of the other-permanent teeth,
especially the double teeth, or molars.
I have registered, within the last four
years, the names of eighty-foar children
for whom I have worked, their ages be
ing between 7 and 14 years. From my
observation and experience with the
children I attribute the caoae of decay
of teeth to the lack of cleanliness. Chil
dren don't know how, and parents fail
to teach them to clean their teeth.
Each of the children, whose names I
have recorded, came to me with a heavy
coat of stain and more or less tarter on
their teeth. The stain softens the
enamel and gives rise to a rotting or de
caying of the teeth. The tarter inflames
the gums, absorbs the bony substance"
in which the tooth is situated, causing
it to become loose, and soon in age to
drop out. I removed the stain and tar
ter and filled all the cavities in the
teeth, giving the children a clean and
healthy mouth. By thoroughly brush
ing their teeth, they keep the stain and
tarter from re-forming, and prevents
any farther decay or loss of teeth. -
Parents, take your children to your
dentist and have their teeth cleaned,
and let him show them how to nse the
brash, for many who nse the brash use
it injarioasly on the teeth, and fail to
clean them. Have him tell them when
to ase the brash on the teeth, and what
to use with it.

Mr. Ed. Boynton, Second son of Mr.
E. L. Boynton, of Kingsley, died last
night of phlegmon, a swelling in, the
throat. Mr. Ed. Boynton was born ia
