Thk Dalles, Jane 3, 1895
. To thk Editor la a few weeks the
thistle will, be in blossom, and then tbe
eed time will come ; and what then?
Thousands upon thousands of eeeds will
be sown and take root in the soil of the
lawns and flower and vegetable gardens,
to say nothing of tbe streets, vacant lots
and alleys. To take note of tbe ap
pearance of some of the unoccupied
property on our main streets, there will
"be enough seed sown this summer to fill
the city next year.
What can be done to prevent this?
How put a Stop to the extension of the
tract of country now occupied by he
thistle? Simply obey the law. Section
9, 10 and 11 of city ordinance No. 274 re
fers to this matter and provides that
property owners shall not permit thistles
to bloom nor exist on their premises nor
ahbutting streets or alleys. -
-The penalty for any violation of this
ordinance is a fine of not less than five
dollars nor more than fifty dollars or im
prisonment in the city jail.
Now is the time to begin and by alittle
work save a vast amount of trouble.
The street commissioner - is charged
with the duty of seeing that the provis
ions of the ordinance are enforced and
ehonld look well to the matter.

The case of the State vs. Dan Maloney
nd Charles Snelling went to tbe jury
- Saturday evening. Mr. Dufur and Judge
Bennett spoke for the defense and were
followed by Mr. Jayne for the prosecu

tate a reasonable doubt. The jury was
out nearly two hours and returned with
' verdict of acquittal. On the first
'ballot the vote stood eight for conviction
-and four for acquittal, but the minority
were not long in changing. The result
was what waB expected.
The special train arrived from Port

the members of the order of Railroad
Conductors, who are taking a jaunt
through the United States. They have
already been in twenty-six different
states and territories. The train was
made np of a baggage car, diner, four
sleepers and the observation car. After
a short stay the cars were switched and
the train proceeded to Portland. Con
ductor Miller was in charge of the party.
Some men from the fishing boat Lil
lian took up their nets Saturday and
spread them on the beach to dry. Some
little pigs came along on a tour of in
vestigation and were mixed up
-with the nets to their lamentable dam

caught. This goes to show that if you

Cured by CUTICUKA.
For about ten or twelve years I hare been
troubled with scrofula. My head was always
sore, my face was dry and scaly, and burned like
lire uiu-b ui me time, juy
body had big red spots on it,
and I did not know what to
do. I went to four different
doctors and they helped me
at first. In the fall I got
worse again: then I tried
other remedies, but tbey did
me no good. I was ashamed
to go into public. I was a
sight to look at. Every one
would say, " What is the mat

t h i n cr 9 " F.nn at mv riallv
labor I had to wear a sort of cap to keep the dirt
from trotting into the sores. After I would
wash, I would be covered with big red pimples
all over my neck and face. Borne two or three
people advised me to try the Cutiottba Rims
dies. I did try them, and am glad I have done
so. Glad to say I am a well man, and in the best
of health since. I cannot praise the Cuticura
Remedies too hiphlv. I enclose my portrait.

Gbntlimbn The Waverley Scorcher and Belle came to hand
yesterday. We are afraid you have sent us the high-priced wheel
by mistake. You can't mean to tell us that this wheel retails for
$85? We must say that it is, without exception, the prettiest wheel
we have ever seen, and, moreover, we have iaith in it, although it
weighs only 22 lbs., for of all Waverleys we have sold tbis year and
last and you know that is a right good number), we have never
had a single frame nor fork broken, either from accident or defect,

high grade, so 01 lied, that we sell. We congratulate ourselves
