ter, who has spent most of the last thirty
days in jail, died today in the house of
correction. Baxter was once a wealthy
man, but lost bis money in stock specu
lation and took to drink. The charges
against nitn were never more serious
than drunkenness and vagrancy,
and almost as ' soon as released
on one charge be- was arrested on an
other. .

Production of Gold.
Washington, May 21. Director of the
mint Preston will tomorrow make pub
lic tl e gold production of the United
States for 1894. While the exact figures
cannot be ascertained it is known the
total will tall far below that of 1893, es
pecially in Colorado. This is attributed
to the strikes. Director Preston had es
timated a total of $43,000,000. It will
' not be nearly that amount.
