Weather Crop Bulletin No." 4 of the
Ore ;on State leather Service (
for Saltern Oregon.
"Wkathkb: Light rain fell on the 16th
and 17th, being heaviest in Umatilla
county; it amounted to from .02 to .34
of an Inch. The temperature" has ranged
from 34 to 75 degrees .in the . Columbia
river valley and from 28 to 66 degrees to
the south ; several light frosts' occurred
In the valley and injurious frosts to the
south.
Crops: There is a general desire for
more rain. The western part of Wasco
county and th northern portion of
Umatilla county have eo far sufficient
moisture, but more will be soon needed.
In Sherman and. Morrow; conn ties the
need of rain is already very marked;
The fall sown grain is quite healthy and
growing well. Spring sown grain is not
in good condition it needs rain.' The
frosts have done little, if any, damage ;
in the valley the frosts were not severe
enough to do damage, and to the eonth
the frnit bnds are not advanced suffi
ciently to b damaged. There is an ex
ception to this statement -in southern
Gilliam county, where frosts have pos
sibly done damage. The frnit wil( make
' a good crop this year ; the cereal crop
will be materially deficient unless gen
eral and copious rains occur Warm
rains will insure good crops, without
general rain there are indications already
of short grain crops. ,
While showers usually occur during
May and June and sometimes1 general
heavy rains occur, yet the conditions
this year are such that a dry season ap
pears to be probable.

The weather for the past week has
been perfect, the hills have taken on a
lovely green, while the orchards are in
full bloom, farmers are about through
seeding and planting is the order of the
day.
The committees in charge of the May
day picnic are doing everything possible
for a big time. They have concluded to
use the Campbell grove for the picnic
grounds, as it is more convenient as to
the location, being close to the new hall
where the grand concert of the eeaeon
will be given the same evening. We
have learned from the committee in
charge of the picnic, that the grounds
will be cleared off and reseated with
every convenience for speaking, singing
and games, too numerous to mentiou
Mr. J. C. Burkes of Mora, will be tht

conducted by Prof. McGregor with his
harmony group, assisted by a quartet
from Moro, under the leadership of Mr,
C. E. Brown, president of the Musical
Association of Sherman county. Miss
A. Conard, of Walla Walla, .will be
.organist for the occasion. The com-

the concert a success and no doubt they
will be rewarded with a full house,

Antelope Notes.
From the Herald.
We learn-that a man was held up in
The Dalles last Friday in broad day-light
while he was on his way home. It was
done by two of his friends, who could
barely, walk straight themselves.
An industrious man spends the firet 40
yeirs of his lite at hard labor, and the
next twenty running around, trying to
find a climate in which he can live. A
lazy man has good health anywhere.
This is the finest lambing weather ex
perienced in many years. The nights
are a trifle cool, but there is no rain nor
snow to make them disagreeable. .. A
large percentage of lambs will be saved,
Mr. Fred Walker, a Ynntton buyer
from Portland, accompanied by Mr;'
Charley Akers, one of the solid citizens
of Northern Sherman county, were up
in this section the first of the week con
tracting for the purchase of a large band
of 3 year old wethers from the P. L. & L,
ix. ine price paid was a little over
f3. They are both old friends of the
Shutt family, whose guests they were
over Wednesday night.
Hydrophobia Developed From the Bite
of a Cat.
Tallaha-6b, Fla., April 22. Henry,
the 12-year-old son of Chief of police
Benrutt-r, of this city, developed decided
symptoms of hydrophabia yesterday and
last niithc hi life was despaired of. Six
wee ago, wtuie Henry ana a younger
brother were visiting relatives in. Jack
sonville, the latter was attacked by a
large I -lac It cat. Henry went to help his
brother, and was terriblv scratched and
bitten on his lace and bands by the cat,
Tlie injuries were cauterized, and the
toy -med in his usual health until
yesterday. While playing in the yard
with oi her children the boy began to act
et,rarii;ely, Hnd manifested a disposition
to scratch his playmates. His parents
wen-railed, and when they .appeared
Henry ran to them, mewing like a cat.
he was seized and confined and doctors
summoned, but thev have not been able
to relieve the child. At times he would
become quiet and purr and mew. Then
a violent paroxypm seizes him and he
acts like an enraged cat and uses bis
fingers as claws. His case is considered
hopeless.
