THURSDAY APRIL 4, 1895 OUR MOTHER EARTH. " Tnere has been a period of depression throughout the agricultural portions of the United States that has naturally caused a like depression in all other in dustries, As a result of this, farm lands have depreciated in value, farming has come to be looked upon as an unprofita ble pursuit, and there has been in con sequence a rapid filling up of the cities at the expense of the rural population The movement is a natural one, for it serves to adjust the elements of supply and demand, and the final result will be to enhance the value of farm products, and consequently of the land itself, It will be but a lew years until the landed proprietor, the owner of the broad acres, will be looked upon, even in this country, as the most favored of men. The country is 'settling up rap idly, and when ' there are no more new lands to be acquired those who have farms to bequeath to their children will have the noblest of all inheritances to leave them. This is a grand old earth, literally our mother from whose bosom all of her children are furnished sustenance, Pew, indeed, look upon the soil with other than the idea of its value as an invest ment. In the practical every-day life- -the perpetual rush and grasping for money, the sentimental is entirely over looked. Tour true patriot loves the soil that sustains him, and so loving it he is apt to own some of it. There is pride, a self-reliance in the ownership of land; a feeling that the country is your country because you own a part of it. We have an inborn love of land, not for its value from a money stand' point, but because we look upon it as f benefactor. All that we have of pleas ure, of joy, of hope, of sadness, are of the earth. And when no longer we tread the shady paths, or listen to the winds whisperings to the trees, or bear the splashing of the running waters, or see the beauties wrought when the glad soil drinks in the rain and turns with dewy lips to meet the kisses of the vernal sun ; when age comes on to stiffen the supple limbs that erstwhile danced for the very joyousness of living, and bends the back to bring the silvery head yet nearer to the earth that soon will open uer rooea to receive and shelter us we should go gladly and willingly, a's to a mother's arms to be lulled to sleep and iaia to rest, in ere on her bosom we may sleep. The seasons may chaee each other swiftly around the starry circle; thetide of years will ebb and flow ; the winds and the rain will beat down the lowly mound that marks the spot where our good mother has shel terea us, ana in a lew Drier years we shall pass away from the memory of men it is the kind old earth that will give us a resting place forever. It pro vides for us in life, and takes care of us wnen aeaa. why then should we not look upon it with the eyes of sentimen and affection, and be moved to pride at the sense of ownership in it? A FAMILY AFFLICTION. Rev. Wm. Cleveland, brother of the president has been asked to resign by the representatives of the congregation of his church, the vote being 28 to 1 jar. Cleveland, instead of resigning, will appeal to the presbytery. The president seems to be afflicted the same way, and while it is not probable that he will be asked to resign, yet If the matter could be put to a vote, it would be found as nearly unanimous as that concerning his brother. Just now the chief executive occupies the peculiar distinction of being a president without a party. Elected as a democrat, Mr, Cleveland tried to hover too many eggs that did not belong in his nest, and eo spoiled all. He refuses to follow the policy of his party, does not believe in republicanism, and has no confidence in mugwumps. At the same time he has no definite policy of bis own, bnt is just drifting along, going like the old "nig ger, through the woods, and spreading his Bails to every breeze, in hopes of being nominated for a third term. In a little more than a year the na tional conventions will be held, and when dir. Cleveland reads the proceed iDgs of the republican convention h can easily name his successor.' ' The state board of horticulture, which has been in session at Portland for sev eral days, adjourned yesterday . until October. The meeting was said to be a very profitable one. . The rules and reg ulations governing the quarantining of peet-infected trees and stock have been put in simple and concise form. They will be given to the preea as soon as they are passed upon by an attorney. The letters in the Oregonian on the resources of the state and the steps nec essary to develop them are very interest- ng, though necessarily they are more or less repititions of each other. The gen eral opinion seems to be that we. must practice economy, diversify our farming, grow everything we need and something besides, and above all to be a unit in everything that will advance the inter ests of the state.
