"Perhaps you would not think so, but
a very large proportion of the diseases
in New York comes from carlessnes
about catching cold, "say 8 Dr. Cyrus Ed-
, son. "It is such a simple thing and so
common that very few people, unless it
is a case of pneumonia, pay any atten
tion to the cold. New Tork is one of
" the healthiest places on the Atlantic
Coast and yet there are a great many
. cases of catarrh and consumption which
have their origin in this neglect of the
simplest precaution of every day fife,
The most sensible advice is, when you
have one get rid of it as soon as possible,
By all means do not neglect it." Dr. Ed

Viceroy 1.1 Mast Die.
Washington, March 26. In a private
cablegram from Tokio received by a
member of the Japanese legation here is
news of world-wide interest. According
to this dispatch, which comes from the
highest officials in Japan, a German
physician, president Si the university of
Tokio, and an expert of high standing,
was sent yesterday, at the personal re
quest of the mikado, to examine Li
Hung Chang's wound. After a thorough
examination of his distinguished patient,
the physician reported confidentially.' to
the mikado that Li Hang Chang must
die. The wound is in the 'face, and the
ballet, which the sargeon had not suc
ceeded in extracting, is apparently be'
yond reach. Moreover, Li Hung Chang
is 70 years of age, and, although a giant
physically, his years are against him
The dispatch which conveys the infor
mation is a private and confidential one,
but its trustworthiness -is not doubted
by its recipient.

Columbus, O., March 26. Governor
McKinley's Southern trip will be follow
ed soon by a "swing around the circle"

governor's visit. It is now arranged for
the governor to leave Columbus about
June 1. The trip will include most of
the Western. states and extend to the
Pacific coast. In view of this fact it is
generally doubted here that Governor
McKinley has put himself on record, as
reported from Thomas ville, Ga., as
being unalterably opposed to free coin
age of silver. He would hardly take a
stand, they say, against the unmistak
able wishes of the people, among whom
he intended to go immediately in the
furtherance of his interests in the presi
dential nomination.

An Awful Accident.
A $300 span .of horses belonging to Mr.
C. B. Durbin, met death last Tuesday in
very singular manner. " Charley and
George Dodd were up on the plateau,
about two miles southwest of. the
Meadow Lawn farm, catting down juni
per trees, hauling them to the edge of
the steep bank and damping them over,
so that the wood could be procured from
the canyon beneath. In hauling a large
tree up to the dumping place, the team
got a little too close to the edge, and
over went horses, tree and all, over a
precipice nearly 300 feet in heighth.
When the tree started to roll, the horses
truggled frantically to free themselves
from , the death trap, bat it availed
nothing. ...When they came to the edge
of the steep precipice they - both reared
high in the air, and fell Over backwards,
falling about 150 feet before striking the
bowlders beneath, and then rolled about
150 feet! farther, into the canyon. The
scene was an awful one to the two men
who witnessed it, and when they reached
the canyon they found the poor brutes
almost smashed, and hardly an un
broken bone in their bodies. It was Mr,
Durbin's best 'team, and he would not
have taken $300 in cash for it. Antelope

A Rise in Mutton.
The best news we have heard for a
long time is this : Last week a St.
Louis mutton buyer, whose name no one
seems to have learned, bought 1400 head
of sheep from Alvey Wilcox, paying
$2.60 per head for the ewes and $2.40 for
the lambs, with the wool on. He also
bought 1600 head from Kohler & Karlen,
at $2.75 for ewes, $2.95 for wethers and
$2.40 for lambs. John Grant also sold
hia entire band, 2000, at $3.15 per head.
He likewise bought a large band of cattle
from parties on the river, paying 3 cents
per pound all around. This is the high
est price paid since the democratic party
took hold of the governmental reins,
two years ago, and we sincerely hope the
same will keep on the upward incline.
