WASHINGTON LETTER.
From our regular correspondent.
Washington, March 22, 1895.
Mr. Cleveland and Secretary Gresham
ought to blush for ysbaine. every time
they think about demanding the recall
of Mr. Thurston, the Hawaiian minister.
It is but another added to the long list
of unmanly acts with which Hawaii has
been dealt by this administration. It is
simply childish for Secretary Gresham
to pretend that the recall was asked for
)uifanaa ATfniDtov T'Hiirafnn OflTA lnfnr.
mation to the newspapers about Ha'
waiian matters before he gave it to the
depart ment of state. That is merely an
excuse. Thurston's real oneuce has
been that be was always wide awake to
prevent any misrepresentation of Ha
waiian affairs being accepted by ' the
American people, and was consequently
constantly opposed to the administra
tion and its policy. Secretarv Gresham
does not consider giving diplomatic ad
vance information to the newspapers
any crime when it can be made to serve
bis own purpose.;' It has been' scarcely
a week since be gave the newspapers his
dispatch to Minister Taylor, demanding
an apology , from Spain for those shots
. from a Spanish gunboat at a 17. S. mail
steamer, before it had been cabled to
Spain. He not. only gave- out the dis
patch, but be compelled those who used
it to do so under a Madrid date line, so
as to leave the impression that it was
given out in Madrid and not in Wash-
. ington a senseless bit of deception
which was at one discovered and ex-.
posed. It will be remembered that Mr
Cleveland promised congress, in a special
message, that be would keep it advised
concerning our relations with Hawaii
Yet in th face of that promise a com
munication asking that Minister Thurs
ton be recalled was sent to the Hawaiian
government on Feb. 21st, eleven days
"before the adjournment of congress, and
not one word was said to congresB about
it. It is not surprising that Senator
Frye should say: "It looks to me like
a very small piece of business."
They are telling a story in Washing'
ton at the expense of ex-Congressman
Bryan, of Nebraska, that hits off Mr
Bryan's ruling trait good enough to be
true, if it isn't. According to the story
a book agent induced Mr. Bryan to buy
a copy of the Century Cyclopedia of
Names,, by telling him that the book
contained the name and biography of
every man, living and dead, who ever
made a marked impression upon the
affairs of the world. A few days after
the book was delivered Bryan sent for
the book 'agent and said to bim : "You
sold me that book under false pre'
tences." "I beg pardon, but you are
mistaken," replied the suave book agent
Mr. Bryan began to lose his temper and
snapped out: "Didn't you tell me that
the book contained the name and biog
raphy of every man, living and dead.
who bas made an impression upon the
world's affairs?" ?'Yes, sir: ; and .it
does." '"It does nothing of the sort
my name isn't in it.". ."Why. should it
be?" retorted the book agent.
' Although the senate rejected the nom
ination of Alfred D. Tinsley to be post
master at Sioux Falls. South Dakota
the home of Senator Pettigrew, by more
than a three-quarter vote 42 to 13 Mr,
lleveland this week signed Tinsley
commission as '" postmaster. Evidently
Mr. Cleveland liked to be jumped on by
the senate, and he will certainly again
get jumped on about this appointment
wnen congress meets again. ; , .
Sibley and the new silver party, are
already reported to be on the verge of
divorce. Sibley is rich, but he is also
sUrew that's one reason why -he-is
rich and those who had an idea that
they would be allowed to have the run of
the Sibley money bags In return' for
having suggested him as a presidential
candidate have already discovered how
badly mistaken they were. In other
words, Mr. Sibley rdeclinea- .to:-put'np
money for moonshine, and ia conse
quence the promoters of the silver party
no longer even pretend to believe that
Sibley is a great man who only needs to
have his statesmanship developed. !
Even the populists bave refused to join
the silver party. This isn't a one idea
country. Tnere never nag Deen and
there never will be a successful political
party which, confines itself to a single
idea. That , a majority a very large
majority of the people of this country
believe in bl-metaliem is certain, but
that they will sink all other beliefs and
ever be merged . into one political party
isn't probable. Let no man make the
mistake of supposing that silver is going
to be the deciding factor in next year's
presidential campaign, or that any third
party is going to cut any figure in the
campaign. The ngnt is going to be be-
ween the republican and democratic
parties, and it is reasonably certain that
the republican platform will declare for
bi-metalism, and probable that the dem
ocratic platform will do the 'same, or
straddle the question, notwithstanding
the echeming now going on to re-nom
inate Mr. Cleveland on a gold basis
platform. . . A. S.

..'A. Biff Catch, of Burglars.; - J-
Foet Wayne, Ind., March , 25. The
biggest catch' of burglars . yet., made in
Northern Indiana was made yesterday
For six months burglars, highwaymen
and , cracksmen bave plied their work
here, also at W alien, Cherubusco and
Huntington, - looting twenty or more
stores. Captain Borgman and the police
surrounded the entire gang in the house
here and captured them. Among them
were: George Dolan . and William
Thompson, pals of the notorious Marvin ;
Jack Guy, Henry Lacy, Adolph Key king
and a locksmith., One confessed to thirty
jobs. The houee had thousands of
dollars', worth of stolen property in it,
"Perhaps you would not think so, but.
a very large proportion of the diseases
in New York comes from carlessnes
about catching cold, "says Dr. Cyrus Ed
son. "It is such a simple thing and so
common that very few people,- unless it
is a case of pneumonia, pay any atten
tton to the cold. New York is one of
the healthiest places on the Atlantic
Coast and yet there are a great many
cases of catarrh and consumption which
have their origin in this neglect of the
simplest precaution of every day fife,
The most sensible advice is, when you
bave one get rid of it as soon as possible,
By all means do not neglect it." Dr. Ed
son does not tell you how to cure a cold
but we will. It will relieve .the lungs
aid expectoration, open, the secretions
and soon . effect a permanent cure. - 50

pocket the proceeds, of the days sales
The couple were - attacked by four
negroes, and they were beaten into in
