Newfoundlanders Opposed to Union With. Canada; St. John's, N. F., March 23. A pub lic meeting last night, under the aus pices of the Anti-Confederation League, which opposes the plau for the anion of Newfoundland with Canada, was one of the most enthusiastic ever held here. Resolutions were passed requesting the colonial government not to send confed eration delegates to Canada, but to ask instead for a royal commission from England. The anti-confederation feel ing is evidently very strong, and the plan of sending a delegation to Ottawa decidedly unpopular. However, public clamor seems likeiv to prove of no avail. In all probability the delegation, which is already named, will proceed to Ottawa. Premier Sir William Whiteway contin ues very ill, and cannot accompany his colleagues in the delegation when they leave Newfoundland, but intends follow ing them when sufficiently recovered. Besides the premier, the delegation, as named, will consists of Robert Bond, George Emerson and Eward Morris All the documents and other material will be ready for the delegates in time for the next Halifax steamer. It is un derstood that the government has not yet asked for the co-operation of the op position as regards confederation, and it is not likely to do so. A Secret. The program, as , published, urges the new ministers to - act with energy regarding the disturb- ances in Cuba, and says that Cuba will make any sacrifice in order to suppress uprisings. "Washington, March 23. Considerable curiosity is felt here as to the complex t ion of the new Spanish ministry. It 1b regarded as not unlikely that the con servative Canovas del Castillo will form the cabinet. This would result in all probability in the resignation of the Spanish minister at Washington, as the minister is a liberal, and could not serve under a conservative prime minister, lOO Reward S10O 1 he readers of this paper will be pleased to learn that there is at least one dreaded disease that science has been able to cure in all its stages, and that is Catarrh. The precise complaint which was forwarded to the Hawaiian government, in the customary manner through Willis, upon which Mr. Thurston's recall is requested, stated that he had made statements to the press reflecting upon the American minister at Honolulu, and intended to discredit him and impair his usefulness. It is claimed that when confronted by Gresham with, certain publications of this character, Thurston acknowledged himself the source from which the infor mation had been derived and also ad mitted his mistake in giving the matter publicity, and upon this Gresham im mediately represented to the Hawaiian republic that Thurston was no longer welcome in an official capacity in Wash ington. The complaint that Thurston had pub lished official matters before communi cating them to the state department, was considered of secondary importance, though the administration regarded it as strange that be should have officially confirmed the report that the schooner Walberg had cleared from San Francisco to land 1000 stands of arms, of which the Hawaiian government had captured only 300. It is said the attitude of Thurston toward Willis alone was the immediate ground for declaring bis offi cial continuance at Washington no longer desirable, and upon this representation the Hawaiian government is relied upon to withdraw him. "Perhaps you would not think so, but a very large proportion of the diseases in New York comes from carlessnes about catching cold,"says Dr. Cyrus Ed son. "It is snch a simple thing and so common that very few people, unless it is a case of pneumonia, pay any atten tion to the cold. New York is one of the healthiest places on the Atlantic Coast and yet there are a great many cases of catarrh and consumption which have their origin in this neglect of the simplest precaution of every day. fife The most sensible advice is, when you have one get rid of it as soon as possible. By all means do not neglect it." Dr. Ed- ton does not tell you how to cure a cold but we will. It will relieve the lungs, aid expectoration, open the secretions and soon effect a permanent cure. 50 cent bottles for sale by Blakely & Hough' ton, druggists. Unmerciful Disaster.
