Disposition of War Dopirtment to Up
hold tk Rioters. . ,
Madrid, March 16. The raida of the
army officers upon the newspaper offices
were discussed in congress this after
noon. The war minister described the
trouble in a manner which elicited re
peated protest from, the reporters pres
ent, and eventually caused them to
leave the house in a body. At a meet
ing held this evening, the Madrid editors
resolved to notify the government that
they would suspend the publication of
all the city newspapers tomorrow unless
they should receive guarantees of the
safetv of their lives and property. Pre
mier Sagasta this evening granted a
bearing to a deputation of journalists.
He assured them that he regarded last
night's attack of junior army officers on
the newspaper offices as a- very serious
matter. He promised to make them a
definite statement with regard to afford
ing them protection after conferring
with the minister ot war and the captain-general.
- v ' - -
These attacks on the newspaper offices
were provoked, it is claimed, by the ap
pearance of articles charging that the
officers in the service of Spain have been
so reluctant to volunteer for the Cuban
service that the government has been
compelled to draw lots to determine
who should be ordered to the front.

A Good Word Erom Mr. Clarice.
The following from the pen of S. A
Clarke gives a good idea of the adaptibly
of this section of country to fruit culture,
Mi. Clarke is the man who according to
his own statement has never told aught
but the truth.
The Dalles and surrounding country
of Wasco county, offer very great induce
ments to fruitgrowers. Eastern Oregon
excels this western valley in production
of small fruits. The Clark strawberry,
that orginated near Mount Tabor, close
n Pnvtlnn ia fha nrnnflarfnl oil-yr nnH
market berry grown at The Dalles and
Hood River, and far excels there what
is done with and for it in the land of its
birth. The district along the Columbia
r and from the Cascade range on the east
to the Deschutes river, from the Colum
bia to the Tygli valley, south, is well
adapted to fruit, as vicinity to the
mountains renders the uplands fruitful
without irrigation over most of those
broad hillsides.. , Wherever . irrigation . is
possible, small fruits are grown in won
derful luxuriances , ,.

Escape of a Prisoner. , .
Caibo, Egypt, March' 16. Following
are the particulars of the escape of Slatin
Key from Bahdi's camp, Omdurman,
Khartoum, where he has been a prisoner
for eleven years past. Slatin escaped
with the assistance of a Soudan merchant
named Eyail, who arrived 'here from.
Omdurman some months ago bearing a
letter from Slatin Key in which the
latter asked if some arrangement 'could
be made with Eyail eo as to enable him
to escape. Eyail was placed in com
munication with the Austrian consul
here, who ma-le a contract with the mer
chant, the latter agreeing to try and
effect the escape of Slatin Key. When
the arrangements ere completed, Eyail
returned to Emdurman and laid bis
plans to get Slatin away, but the first
attempt failed. Eyail persisted, how
ever, and eventually succeeded in getting
Slatin Key out of Omdurman. After
Father Oherwalder effected his escape in
December, 1891, he stated that there
were forty Europeans Btill held at Om
durman, that they were kept lodged with
manacles and were often cruelly beaten
and were so strictly guarded that they
had lost all hope of ever escaping. He
also stated Slatin Key was stitl aliye and
belonged to a bodyguard of Mahdi's suc
cessor, but - that he also was closely
watched. ' ' ) V ,
"Perhaps you would not think so, bnt
a very large proportion of the diseases
in New York comes from carlessnes
about catching cold,"says Dr. Cyrus Ed
son. "It is such a simple thing and so
common that very few people, unless it
is a case of pneumonia, pay any atten
tion to the cold. New York is one of
the healthiest places on the Atlantic
Coast and yet there are a great many
cases of catarrh and consumption which
have their origin in this neglect of the
simplest precaution of every day fife,
The most sensible advice is, when you
have one get rid of it as soon as possible.
By all means do not neglect it." Dr. Ed
eon does not tell you how to cure a cold
but we will. It will relieve the lungs,
aid expectoration, open the secretions
and soon effect a permanent cure. . 50
