The committee of physicians appointed
by the city council to select a site for a
pest bouse yesterday agreed upon a site
the other side of the old military bury
ing ground, and the work of erecting a
building was begun yesterday afternoon.
The building will be 24 feet square, one
story an-1 will contain four rooms. It
will be completed tomorrow.
The weather clerk seems determined
to make amends for the' deep snows he
sent ns in January and is furnishing a
quality of weather that is above par.
The result is that the city ia duller just

Anyone who has recently paid a visit
to the Central school in this city could
not well avoid noticing the seats in the
different rooms of that building. The

The remedy suggested is the proper
one, only the application seems to be
wrong. The building is all right, but
what's the matter with giving new seats
to that is to say re-seatiug the boys.
As the seats are becoming "worn and
full of slivers," the boys have a right to
demand this repairing.

City Council Meeting.
At a special called meeting of the city
council held last evening at the record
er's office, the following business was
transacted, Councilmen Nolan," Adams,
Kuck, Lauer and Hood being present:
On motion Councilman Nolan was
elected chairman pro tem. The object
of the meeting was to make necessary
arrangements for attending the funeral
of the late mayor, and to take such
other action as was appropriate to the
occasion.
It was on motion ordered that the
council request the business men of tho
city to close their respective places of
business from 12 o'clock noon until 4
o'clock p. m. Saturday, March 9, 1895,
during the time of the funeral.
On motion it was ordered that a com
mittee of three be appointed by the
chair to draft proper resolutions on the
death of the mayor, and to have the
council chamber draped in mourning,
and to take such other action as they
deem necessary to show the esteem of
the council for the deceased, and its re
spect for his sterling qualities.
On motion it . was ordered that the
city treasurer advertise in the daily Ore
gonian, The Dalles Chronicle and the
Times-Mountaineer that he will receive
bids for $00,000 bonds to be issued by
Dalles City np to 4 o'clock p. m. April
151895.
On motion it was ordered that the bill
of Teague . Bros, for $60, being for thirty
days team hire for the fire department
be allowed and paid at the rate of $1.75
per day. .
On motion it was ordered that the
chairman' pro tem be authorized to act
as mayor until the meeting of the coun
cil Saturday night, March 9th.
On motion it was ordered that when
the conncik. adjourn, it adjourn until
Saturday,. March 9th, at 7:30 o'clock
p. m. - '

How. tne Mistake Occurred.
We stated Thursday that Judge Brad
shaw would go to Heppner Monda5 to
open court. This was a mistake and
was caused by his saying he would go to
Moro, which the reporter understood
to Morrow," that is the county of that
name, the county seat of which is Hepp
ner. Now the fact is that the judge will
go to Moro, and not to Morrow. He
will not go tomorrow because he does
not go until Monday, which instead of
being tomorrow will not' be strictly
speaking, tomorrow nntil tomorrow, at
which time he will go to Moro instead
of to Morrow, That is to say, he will
not go to Moro tomorrow, but tomorrow
it can be Baid that' he will go tomorrow
to Moro, instead of to Morrow. Day after
tomorrow he will be in Moro, and then
when we can write today, we may be
able to make the matter clear, but
whether he goes tomorrow or day after
tomorrow he will hold court in Moro
Monday. '.-- - ' " .

Floyd Harmon, who has been em
ployed at the Umatilla House for a long
time, leaves for Murray Springs, the new
station just beyond Grant, tonight. He
will take charge of the Altamont stables
at that place. Floyd is a clever and
affable young gentleman and has the
best wishes of all who know him, for his
sucesss in his new field.

He Ia Mistaken.
Grand Master W. W. Brannin, of the
A. O. U. W., in conversation with an
Ease Oregonian reporter, after giving
some account of his work on his recent
visiting trip to the lodges in his jurisdic
tion, says :
'At Cascade t Locks an inspection was
made of the works on the locks, which
cannot be completed , within one year,
the time of , the expiration of the con
tract being about that far distant. It
is thought that an extension will be
granted, at least it will be asked by the
contractors. More than 350 workmen
are now employed and work progresses
day and night at greatest possible
speed."
Mr. Brannin is an excellent lecturer,
but a poor reporter. His assertion that
the locks will not be completed within
one year, is as great a mistake as the
other statement that the contract will
expire one year from now. The con
tract has already expired, and the locks
will be completed sufficiently to allow
the passage of boats this year.
Resolutions on the Death of I.. Newman.
The Dalles, Or., March 7, '95.
At a regular meeting of Temple lodge,
No. 3, held March 7, 1895, the following
preamble and resolutions were unani
mously accepted:
Whereas, It has pleased the Supreme
Ruler of the universe to remove from our
midst our late brother, L. Newman, and J
Whereas, The intimate relation long
held by our deceased brother with .the
members of this lodge, render proper
that we should place on record our ap
preciation of his services as a Workman
and his merits as a man. Therefore,
be it
Resolved, That while we bow with
humble submission to the will of the
most high, we do not the less mourn for
our brother, who has been called from
his labors to rest.
Resolved, That this lodge tender its
heartfelt sympathy, to the family and
relatives of our deceased brother in this
their sad affliction. '
' Resolved, That these resolutions be
entered upon the minutes of this lodge
and that; a copy of the same be' sent to
the family of our deceased brother. ' ''
