MONDAY - MARCH 4, 1895 CONGBESS ADJOURNED. Tbe fifty-third congress came to an and at noon today, and it came to the end the people have been waiting for too. At tbe same time tbe second and final presidential term of Grover Cleve land reaches its halfway . post. These are two events long hoped for, and noted with proper thankfulness. The congress was elected for the purpose of rebuking the billion dollar republican body that it succeeded, yet notwithstanding its economic ideas and pretensions, it is tbe most expensive congress that ever met, One billion dollars will not meet the bills made, or to be made, and this too in spite of over one hundred million dol lars in gold borrowed to keep up the re serve. However, the fifty-third congress is a thing of the past, and history will do it ample justice. It found tbe country prosperous and contented, and it left it distressed and dissatiefied. It will be a number of years before the democracy gets in power again, and it will not be until in the fulness of prosperity the days of our adversity and the lessons taught by them are forgotten. It is a close race latterly between the renaissance of Napoleon and the reaur rection of Tom Paine for first-place in tbe magazines and newspapers. Time is wearing away the rough edges of the character of both, and Napoleon is now held up before tbe public gaze as a much maligned man, a mild-mannered Chris tian gentleman, with a teart as tender as a girl's ; while Paine is changed from the acute black he has heretofore been painted to a very light drab. A little more Napoleon and a little more Paine will show on the subscription lists of those papers that are devoting so much epace to those superlatively dead people. The reading public has to draw the line somewhere, and when the magazines go to showing photographs of two skulls of Napoleon, one after his remains were brought 'back from St. Helena, and the other when he was a little boy it is time to draw it. - There are rumors of war in Portland, the fight being between the Simon fac tion and Mayor. The latter got angry at the former for fancied slights, for an warranted dictation, and inexcusable treachery. It is said that every officer who is friendly to Simon will be chopped off at the pockctsand that this chop ping process will extend even to the chief of police. There is, no doubt, some foundation for these rumors, and the Simon men are decidedly uneasy. This has been an off year for "Little Joe," but then that picture of his printed in the Portland Sun and afterwards nsed by Palmer & Rey, in all their patent "outsides" of the state, would hoodoo a bigger man than Joe. As the warm sunshine pours down to day, and one eees in all the yards tbe green grass and budding plants, while violets and daisies uplift their pretty little faces, it does not seem possible that only a week or two ago the orange trees of Florida were killed by the cold, or that people were frozen to death in Louisiana. Indeed the spring is further advanced now in Oregon than it is in the Southern states, and the winter has not been more severe. When it comes to climate the year through, we will back Oregon against any country in the world, not even excepting the much lauded skies and balmy breezes of Italy or Cathay. The Oretronian a notes a Salem rjolit ician as saying that Governor Lord will soon appoint Andrew Gilbert, ex-post master at Salem, to the office of snDer intendent of the penitentiary, and that either Captain B. B. Tuttle or CaDtain Harry Wells will be appointed adjutant general. As Marion county already has the governor, the selection of Mr. Gilbert does not seem a good one, and with Multnomah represented by the brigadier- general, it would only be. proper that the adjutant general should be chosen from some other locality. Besides. Mult nomah county has Sheriff Sears and Henry McGinn, and should not demand tne eartn. The latest news from Hawaii is to the effect that President Dole has com' muted tbe sentences of the rebels who were tried recently and condemned to death. The sentences of tbe leaders as reduced are thirty-five and thirty years imprisonment, and $10,000 fine; and those of tbe others uroge from five years to thirty. It ia stated that the ex-qaeen will be Bint ta jail for five years, bat it is thought she will be pardoned. Miss Anna Gould was married today to the Count de Castellane. Thus 'did the daughter of our most noble "robber baron" purchase a title and proud posi tion for herself, as the countess of a no account count. Miss Gould was tbe chromo and in order to get the gilt frame, the picture bad to be purchased also. An Observation Car. Commencing April 1st the O. R. & N. will run an "observation" car between this place and Portland on the local trains. The car will be open on all sides, affording an uninterrupted view of tbe incomparable scenery of the river and the mountains. If this is properly ad vertised it should cause all tourists to stop off here from the morning train and take advantage of the opportunity. The scenery of tbe Columbia gorge has never been appreciated by the tourists because, passing it in the night, few if any, are aware of its beauties. When once its grandeur is appreciated by the travelling public, it will prove quite a drawing card for this route. We have always won dered why the Union Pacific neglected to properly advertise the scenic beauties of this route, and are gratified to know that Mr. McNeill intends to make its attractions known. - Great Oak From little acorns grow, so also do fatal diseases spring from small begin nings. I took three bottles, the sores healed, and I have not been troubled since. Only the scars remain, and the memory of the past, to remind mo of the good Ayer's Sarsaparilla has done me. I now weigh two hundred and twenty pounds, and am in the best of health.
