Could Not be Roused.
Tebee Sautb, Ind., Feb. 28. Samuel
B&kus waa asphyxiated by illuminating
gas yesterday. The physician worked
over him all day but failed bo rouse him
from a comatose state. His pulse is
normal and his breathing regular. The
medical men who have seen him are
completely baffled by his condition.
Ten day 8 loss of time on account of
sickness and a doctor bill to pay, is any
thing but pleasant for a man of a family
to contemplate, whether he is a laborer,
mechanic, merchant or publisher. ' Jas.
O. Jones, publisher of the Leader,
Mexia, Texas,' was sick in bed for ten
days with the grip during its prevalence
a year or two ago. Later in the season
fae had a second attack. He says: "in

San Francisco, Feb. 28. Because of

newly organised board of Fire Under
writers of the Pacific, Hugh Craig,
manager of the New Zealand Insurance
Company, has withdrawn from the com
bine. The withdrawal is expected to re
sult iu a lively war of rates.
