5r. VALENTINE'S DAY.
Tomorrow, Valentine, the patron saint
of all lovers, especially amateurs, will
receive proper recognition all over the
civilized world. The handsome souve
nir, telling of love, will reBt in the mail
Backs alongside of the gaudily-colored
caricature, telling of envy, malice, or
spite. How the day came to be kept in
the way it is, is more than anyone
knows. St. Valentine himself is rather
an uncertain personage, as it is hard to
tell which Valentine the day is kept for.
It is sometimes ascribed to Pope Valen
tine, who occupied the papal chair for
thirty or forty days about the year 827,
and of whom some one with A. P. A.
proclivities, many years ago, remarked
that "He was too good a man to make a
good pope, and bo he died within forty
days of his assuming the office." St.
Valentine's day was not kept on his ac
count, however.
The name is, or was a very common
one, and we find on going back into the
time of the Emperor Claudius (Gothi
cus) that there was another Valentine,
who was a presbyter and martyr. Ac
cording to the Roman legend he was ar
rested by Claudius, and handed over to
Calphurnius, who employed Asterius to
win him back to idolatry. - Instead of
doing so the good Saint Valentine mirac
ulously restored the sight of Asterius'
blind daughter, and bo converted him to
Christianity. After Asterius' failure to
shake his faith, St. Valentine suffered
martyrdom being beaten with clubs,
and finally beheaded in the Flammian
Way Feb. 14th. Another Valentine has
a somewhat similar history. He also
was a preacher and cured the deformed
eon of Craton, a Greek rhetorician liv
ing at Rome, who with many other
prominent persons, was converted. He
too suffered martyrdom, and being
sainted, his day is kept with that of the
other ' Valentine-, Feb. 14th. So it will
be seen the day has two patron saints at
least.
It was perhaps on account of the day
having two or more patron saints that
it was selected as the day in which
happy love might give vent to its feel
ings, tor the wise heads who selected it
knew that where trundle bed love ex
isted and youthful affections were given
full play, that at least two saints were
needed to keep matters straight. The
day is one of joy to the young folks and
of terror to the postal department. The
idea of sending - the little tokens ot bud
ding affection is a pretty one, eomewhat
hampered by the cheap and ugly prints
calculated to ridicule or wound, but as
the latter are usually meant more for a
jest or to recall a foible than as a delib
erate attack, they should not be allowed
to hurt.
We hope The Chronicle readers es
pecially the young perusers of our in
valuable sheet will all receive a quan
tum suf. of billing doves, pierced hearts,
and the divers and sundry emblems
that show how much and how anguish
in gly they are beloved.
Palmer & Rey, in their patent outsides
and insides for the country papers, have
reprinted the pictures of the state
officers, and the members of the legisla
ture. Prominent among them shows
the sneering mug of Joe Simon. The
disseminating of that picture will do
more towards creating a dislike for the
original than all that has been or can be
said concerning the redoubtable Joe.
. Ten days loss of time on account of
sickness and a doctor bill to pay, is any
thing but pleasant for a man of a family
to contemplate, whether he is a laborer,
mechanic, merchant or publisher. Jas,
O. Jones, publisher of the Leader,
Mexia, Texas, was sick in bed for ten
days with the grip during its prevalence
a year or two ago. Later in the season
111 n
ne naa a second attacn. lie says : "in
the latter case I used Chamberlain's
Cough Remedy with .considerable suc
cess, I think, only being in bed a little
over two days. The second attack I am
satisfied would have been equally as bad
as the first butfortheuse of this rem
edy." It should be borne in mind that
the grip is much the same as a very
severe cold and requires precisely the
same treatment. When you wish to
cure a cold quickly and effectually give
this remedy a trial. 50 cent bottles for

of all cases of consumption can, if taken in
the earlier stages of the disease, be cured.
This may seem like a bold assertion to
those familiar only with the means gener
ally in use for its treatment ; as, nasty cod
liver oil and its filthv emulsions, extract
of malt, whiskey, different preparations of
nypopnospmtes anu Bucn iijlc pauzunves.
AJthoueh bv many believed to be incura
ble, there is the evidence of hundreds of
living witnesses to the fact that, in all its
earlier stages, consumption is a curable
disease. Not every case, but a large per
centage of cases, and we believe, fully 98
per cent, are cured by Dr. .Fierce '8 uoiaen
Medical Discovery, even after the disease
has progressed so far as to induce repeated
bleedings from the lungs, severe lingering
cough with copious expectoration (includ
ing tubercular matter), great loss of flesh
and extreme emaciation and weakness.
Do you doubt that hundreds of such cases
reported to ns as cured by ' Golden Med
ical Discovery " were genuine cases of that
dread and fatal disease ? You need not take
our word for it Thev have, in nearly every
instance, been so pronounced by the best
and most experienced home physicians,
who have no interest whatever in mis-
reoresentinir them, and who were often
strongly prejudiced and advised against
a trial of Golden Medical Discovery,"
but who have been forced to confess that
it surpasses, in curative power over thi3
fatal malady, all other medicines with
which they are acquainted, Nasty cod
liver oil and its filthy "emulsions" and
mixtures, had been tried in nearly all these
cases and had either utterly failed to bene
fit, or had only seemed to benefit a little for
a short time. .Extract ot malt, whiskey,
and various preparations of the hypophos
phites had also been faithfully tried in vain.
The photographs of a large number of
those cured of consumption, bronchitis,
lingering coughs, asthma, chronic nasal
catarrh and kindred maladies, have been
skillfully reproduced in a book of 1 60
pages which will be mailed to you, on re
ceiot of address and six cents in stamps,
You can then write those cured and learn
their experience.
