DON'T CALL NAMES.
The Moro Observer this week jumped
on to Mr. Coon, member of the legisla
ture from this and Sherman county, an-1
called him all sorts of names. This may
relieve the mind. of the editor, bat is
certainly not a coarse calculated to con
ciliate Mr. Coon or chauge his opinions,
and besides it is hardly proper to im
pugn a man's motives because he has
opinions that do not coincide with yours
Ii it is proper to call a man a dirty scrub
because be believes in tne iree coinage oi
silver, it is. just as appropriate for the
other-fellow to call bis assailant a liar
and a thief.
A case of deep interest to all fraternal
beneficial orders has recently been de
cided in Philadelphia. It appears that
Joseph E. Artbars joined the order Feb
rnary 28, 1879, as a charter member of
Reliance Lodge, A. O. U. W., and des
ignated his mother, Mary Artbars, as
his beneficiary. On the '3d of October,
1S8S. Artbars married, but made no
change in the certificate, In September,
1887, his mother died, and on April 16,
1889, Arthars also died, leaving his cer
tificate as originally issued. Immedi
ately after his death an administrator
was raised upon bis mother's estate by
. hi s 'two married sisters who claimed the
9 2,000 due by the A. O. U. W., as heirs
of Mary Arthars. The widow filed a
claim in her own behalf, as the only
legal heir to the $2,000. Jndge Arnold
in his decision, holds the mother's in
terest in the beneficiary ceased at her
death, and directed judgment for the
widow for ' the full amount. We believe
these points have been settled before,
but it is well to call attention to these
decisions occasionally so that the mem
bers will see the necessity of changing
the name of the beneficiary when occa
sion requires it. Frater. '.
There seems but little hope of electing
Dolph to succeed himself in the United
States senate. Important as it is that
he should succeed himself it is yet
more important that Oregon have two
senators. The republican party is larger
than any man, its interests of more im
portance than the election or defeat of
any one man for any office. When it
becomes evident that Dolph cannot 1e
elected, (and we think that time has
arrived) an earnest effort should be made
to find some man on whom all parties
can agree. The interest of the national
party require that Oregon should have
her two senators, and the interest of the
party in this state demand that some
mutual ground can be found upon which
all factions of the party may meet. We
still believe as we have always believed,
that Dolph
should be returned to the
senate, but if this cannot be done, some
one else should be selected.
Now that it has been demonstrated
that Senator Dolph cannot be re-elected,
it ought not to be difficult for the repub-
licans to unite upon some man of sound
views on finance, some capable man who
is not an extremist like Mr. Dolph, nor
a man of wild theories like Pennoyer.
There are plenty of broadminded repub
licans in this state who would serve the
state with ability and to the satisfaction
of all, and it begins to appear that such
a man must be selected if the deadlock
ia to be broken. Albanv Herald.
.President Cleveland has notified con
gress of the completion of arrangements
for another bond issue, amounting to
$62,400,000. It is a good many years
since Tacitus made the asse.tion that
"A treasury emptied by extravagance
could only be refilled by crime," and
that remark is as true now as it was
when made. The saddling of an interest
beating debt, payable in gold, upon this
country in time of profound peace is
scarcely short of a crime.
It was certainly a pecular combination
when X. N. Steeves, who is convicted of
manslaughter. anneared in court at
Portland one dav this week to look after
the interests of" a client- Is there any
other country on earth where a convicted
criminal could appear in court as an-
attorney and that too in the court
before which he was convicted and
which is liable to be called upon to send
him to the penitentiary at any moment.
Ten days loss of time on account of
sickness and a doctor bill to pay, is any
thing but pleasant for a man of a family
to contemplate, whether be ia a laborer,
mechanic, merchant or publisher. Jas.
O. Jones, publisher of the Leader.
Mexia, TezaB, was sick in bed for ten
days with the grip during its prevalence
a year or two ago. Later in the season

as the first but for the use of this rem

the grip is much the same as a very
severe cold and requires precise! the
same treatment. When yon wish to
cure a cold quickly and effectually give
this remedy a trial. 50 cent bottles for

The Flouring Mill.
Y. E. Chamberlain arrived in Hood
River during the week. He has not giv
en up the idea of locating his flouring
mill here, and has been prospecting for
a site on F. H. Button's land on the
east side of Hood River, To get a mill
site on Button's place it will be necessary
to tunnel throueh the bluff and strike
tbe river far enough above the county
bridge to eet a eood fall of water from
the river. Wednesday, assisted by sev
eral of our citizens, he made a survey of
the proposed tunnel and found it prac
ticable. If the cost of the tunnel is not '
too much, Mr. Chamberlain will go
ahead with the work and build his mill.
