WEDNESDAY, - FEBRUARY 6, 1895 A DEAD DVDE. Ward McAllister is dead and buried. It is more than sixty years since the time when his littl pink toes, as a re minder of his Simian ancestry, shut themselves down towards the eoles of the baby feet, in the instinctive effort to grasp in quadrumanian style some imaginary branch or limb. It is sixty years, and more, since his toothless lit tle mouth drew from his mother's breast the genuine Holstein or Jersey lacteal that nourished ' his patrician body. And what a sixty years they were for him. For the greater part of the time his brainlet has devoted the entire time to the fitting of garments, the measuring of that great human family, of which he was only second cousin, by the accidents of their birth, the size of their bank accounts, and their relationships with certain Ameri can aristocrats whose immediate ances tors were plebes from Plebeville. The Astors, whose grandfather was a very good trader,, the Vanderbilts, whose grandfather was a very good boatman, were eized up by him as being by their wealth fit associates for the Stuyvesants, the Van Rensseleare, the descendants of the wooden legged governor of New Am sterdam, and the Knickerbockers. While the idea of an American aris tocracy is amusing, McAllister's queer combination, as above stated, would be bard to find any reaeon for. He went through the world a leader of fashion, a moulder of "sassiety," and a dictator as to who should and who should not be admitted to the New York society peer age. But he is dead, and the poor body will soon furnish pabulum for the 400 of New York's select grave worms. At his funeral that great American smooth bore, Chauncy M. Depew, considered himself honored by being allowed to assist as a pall bearer, and across the coffin a representative of the Vander bilts assisted in carrying to the hearse all that was either mortal or immortal of the defunct tailor's dummy. Society New York society mourns his loss. He was the brightest holly hock in society's garden ; most brightly colored butterfly that ever spread its wings to the glare of the sun, forgetful that it was once a slug and a chrysalis ; most arrogant toad in the puddle of toads that were famed for their arro gance only; chief dude, of proportions gigantic enough to dwart all other would be dudes into dudelets. And yet he ' died. Death loves a shining mark ; also a mining shark,. and gave him a swipe, just for his glitter, for in the world be was no use, and it is hard to understand what use he could be put to in the next, When the last day comes and Gabriel's trumpet sounds, then the weary bones of the great Ward will 6tir, and a faint voice will be heard querulously inquir ing for his lavender pantalettes and kid gloves, and he will never fall in line without' them. THE TRUE ANARCHISTS. There is no explaining why both the United States courts and congress man age always to find eome way in which to give the public domain to corporations The recent action of the court of appeals at San Francisco, in deciding that the Oregon & California Railway Company oaa earnea auu.uuu acres ot land near Forest Grove, modestly estimated to be worth $1,000,000, but probably worth $5,000,000, is one of these inexplainable cases. The United States contended that the grant was to aid in the construction of a road from Portland via McMinnville to Astoria or rather that there were two roads, one to McMinnville from Portland the other to Astoria, and that the grant was to the latter. The courts decided that there was one continuous road from Portland to Astoria and McMinnville and that the construction of the road to McMinnville entitled the road to the 1 1 . . . WW. lanutj, as iar aB mat point, rue case looks like a cold steal, but it is in keep ing with the custom of courts and con grese, lor neither were ever known to render a decision or perform an act favor able to the people as against the claim of a corporation. The anarchists of this country who will eventually cause a terrible upheaval are not the Johann Mosts, the Fieldings, the Spies, the Lanngs. They are the Huntingtons, the Crockers, the congress and the' United States courts. With these and such as these lurks the danger to our institutions. Senator Smith of Wasco and Sherman counties has introduced a sensible bill, which would settle the question of mak ing the Columbia riyer available aa a means of getting the products of the eastern portion of the state to market. It iB short and to the point, simply pro viding that when switches are put in at Celilo and The Dalles, the O. R. & N. shall furnish cars and haul them be- ween the points named for stated prices, it tne oui com a De passed ana enfored it would be a great thing, but as the courts would have to construe the law, it would be many years before any settlement of the question could be reached. It is now claimed that the anti-Dolph legislators are going to attempt to block all legislation. As it seems quite proba ble that the railroad commission and its fellows are to be continued, it is perhaps the most creditable thing that faction has yet done. If there can be no repeal some of . the old laws, the next best thing is the prevention of any ne w ones A Froper Bill. The following resolution was intro duced in the Washington legislature, and it should not only pass that body, but should be indorsed by our own. Whereas, The low price ot farm products necessitates their delivery at points of exehange or sale, at the lowest possible price for freight charges; and Whereas, The Columbia river, if un obstructed, would furnish a cheap and effective means of transportation to a large portion of the state of Washington, which is now at the mercy of railroad transportation lines; and Whereas, The United States govern ment has adopted the recommendations of a board of engineers appointed to re port on the same, in favor of a ship rail way to overcome the obstructions at the dalles or Tnmwater falls of the Colum bia river, and an appropriation has been made to begin such improvements; and Whereas, Experience has demon strated that more efficient and speedy work results from contract work than from work under government charge; and Whereas, The interests of the state demand an early" completion of Buch mprovements at the dalles or tumwater falls of the Columbia river, in order that such improvements may be operated in connection' with the canal and locks at the cascades of the Columbia river; therefore, be it Resolved by the house of representatives of the state of Washington, the senate con curring, That the senators and repre sentatives of the state of Washington, in the congress of the United States, use every means in their power to se cure the placing pf the construction of such improvements under contract ; and be it further Resolved, That the secretary of state of the state of Washington be and is here by instructed to furnish a copy of this resolution to each of the United States senators and representatives of said state. Ten days loss of time on account of sickness and a doctor bill to pay, is any' thing but pleasant for a man of a family to contemplate, whether he is a laborer. mechanic, merchant or publisher. J as O. Jones, publisher of the Leader Mexia, Texas, was sick in bed for ten days with the grip during its prevalence a year or two ago. Later in the season he had a second attack. He says: "in the latter case I used Chamberlain's Cough Remedy with considerable suc cess, I think, only being in bed a little over two days. The second attack I am satisfied would have, been equally as bad as the first but for the use of this rem edv." It should be borne in mind that tne grip is much tne same as a very severe cold and requires precise!; the same treatment. When you wish to cure a cold quickly and effectually give this remedy a trial. 50 cent bottles for sale by Blakeley & Houghton Druggists Tobacco Warehouse Burned. Cincinnati, O.,- Feb. 5.
