The beet text for a business sermon that has been preeented iu many a day is a sentence in the advertising matter of a Minneapolis firm, which reads: "If business in not good, don't squeal,. but root." It is illustrated by a porker who has quite squealing and gone to rooting, with apparently good success. It is not a flowery, sentimental or elegant text, bat, what is more to the point, it is practical and suggestive. The disposition to squeal instead of root has never been so marked as during the past eighteen months of financial depression. Many men have expended so much force squealing that they bad none left for rooting. They have spent their days in grumbling about hard times instead of making an effort to im prove them. They have passed the hours in lamentation and let their busi ness dwindle, while their more sensible competitors rooted. . There are many have not only daring tbe hard really prospered, squeal ; they rooted hard times those business men who held their own times, but have But they didn't . In good times or who succeed never squeal. Their time is so fully occupied in rooting that they can spare none of it for squealing. It doesn't matter what business one may be engaged in he will always find a loss in squealing and profit in rooting. In the long list of failures annually recorded in this county are found the squealers ; the rooters haven't time to fail. If business is not good, don't squeal, but root; and if business is good, there is still less reason for squealing and still more cause for rooting. Grocers' Jour nal of Commerce. THE NEW FISH LAWS. A dispatch from Tacoma yesterday says : "The joint fisheries committees of the Oregon and Washington legislatures to day considered and adopted a bill which will be favorably reported to each legis lature. It closes the Columbia river and tributary streams to fishermen eight months per year, and grades fishermen's license fees from $200 down to $2.50, ac cording to the way the fish are caught." This is a good law, as it will serve to protect the fish, instead of, as at pres ent aiding to exterminate them. The Baker City Democrat mentions the fact that the Sumpter valley mills are ' emptying so much sawdust in Powder river that in order to get clear, . clean ice, those engaged in putting it up have to go three miles above the city. The Oregonian of the same date men tions a vote of thanks to Fish Commis sioner McGuire by the joint legislative committees from this state and Wash ington. As the putting of sawdust in the streams is against the law that Mr. jucvjruire is Bupposea to enforce, we opine that that vote of thanks was pre mature. What the fish commissioner needs is to have his work dispensed with. The bill to prevent the catching of salmon in wheels, should be DronoDtlv and indefinitely postponed, and if the . old law that provides that licenses must be obtained to fish and that none but citizens could get the licenses, is not strong enough another should be passed and enforced. It is said that of the 153 clerks at Salem 111 are employed by the senate and 42 by the house. Just what work thirty senators can find for 111 clerks is the one thing that no one seems to know. Reserved Seats now on sale at Blakeley & Houghton's Drugstore. Mitchell Motes. Well, Mr., Mrs. or Miss ot The Chbon icxe, I certainly sympathize with you when your local news have almost en tirely failed, for my notes of this week are almost a failure, but in my peram bulations for these, although I am old and' gray' and rheumatic I kept my feet under me and do not have to report braises, if I must report failures almost. Take a little advise from one of some years experience, and do not undertake such a perilous descent until you have first oiled well your stiffened joints. And it might be well as a preventative to wear a pair of goggles, if your eyesight is poor, that you might better see your way. We of this mountainous region are not seriously afflicted with stiffened joints, as I should judge not from the number of social hops the young people indulge in and dancing exercises that keep them every or every other evening daring the week. Oar weather is excellent ; no better could be desired. There is but little snow and a scaicity of cold. One night tbe thermometer fell to four below zero, and no win-l for more than a week, a thing unusual for this section. At present the general health, like the weather, is at the best. I can record but one serious case of illness; Mr. Magee is afflicted with inflamatory rheu matism. Little Tommy Ware while coasting one day last week, was knocked down and run over by a coasting sled, braising the muscles of one leg so seriously that he has not been able to stand on it since. KoDDy lanz's noree tell witn him a few days since and bruised one leg so much he was quite a cripple a few days, but nothing serious. The Central hotel is opened again, it having been closed since the death of Mrs. Boardman, the proprietress. Mr. Pearson, who was badly cut by Pbipps Luny last week, is able to return home. The friends of Miss Laura Sasser will be glad to know she is spending an en joyable time among relatives and friends. At present she is visiting friends on Gird creek. v Stock in general are doing very well. Nothing is being fed except a few old horses and cows and eheep. The snow in the Shoo Fly country is about six inches deep. E. V. E. Mitchell, Or., Jan. 27, 1895. Caution to Telephone Purchasers. The Northern Pacific Railway com pany uses a large number of private tele phones at various places throughout the length of its roads, which have been heretofore leased from the Bell telephone company, through whose, territory the road runs. A few months ago, by cir cular letter -from headquarters, the Bell telephones were ordered out and were replaced by infringing telephones of other manufacturers.. The change, in its usual course, came to the attention of the counsel of the company, who decided that the guar antees of the manufacturers were no pro tection, and it was hazardous to subject the Northern Pacific railway company to later litigation and the payment of large damages, so last week a circular was re ceived by all offices discontinuing the in fringing instruments, and the Bell tele phone have been ordered replaced. Any telephone set up in complete wording order, embodies a dozen or more patents dependingapon each other for a satisfactory and working whole, and therefore the expiration of one or two of these patents does not open to free use a complete or even a workable telephone. m-w-f.
