Gnnst Is Denounced.
San Feancisco, Jan. 12. Citizens re
sponded by thousands to Sutro's call for
a mass meeting to protest against the
Appointment of Mose Gunst as police
commissioner, to denounce United
States Attorney Knigbt for his refusal to
issue a warrant for the arrest of C. P.
Huntington for a violation of the inter
state commerce law, and to denounce
the frauds that were committed at the
last election. Metropolitan hall was
crowded to the dcors and thousands of
people were turned away. The meeting
was very bueiness-like. Representative
citizens were there ; speeches were made
by prominent men, and appropriate res
olutions were adopted. The resolutions
. adopted denounce C. P. Huntington as a
'self-confessed briber, and accuse him of
taking $56,000,000 from English stock
holders in the Central Pacific. A solemn
protest is entered against the passage of
the funding bill, and the speaker of the
house ia appealed to to protect, the
people of California by refusing to give
a special order for a day to the Pacific
railroad committee. Each individual
member of congress is appealed to not to
overlook 200,000 protests against this
bill filed by inhabitants of the Pacific
railroad committee. The resolutions de
mand that the legal authorities of the
United States in this judicial district
shall issue a warrant for the arrest of
Huntington. The president is appealed
to to see that justice is done and that Le
demand that Attorney Knight and Com
miesioner Heacook do their full duty
under the law, or that they be removed
from the offices that they are disgracing
and degrading. The other resolutions
' denounce ex-Governor Markham as the
tool of the Southern Pacific, and the ap
pointment of Mose Gunst as police com'
misBioner is characterized as a burning
shame and disgrace to the respectable
portion of the community. . It was re-
solved that a committee of three be ap
pointed to wait upon Gunst and request
hixa to resign the office of police com
missioner; also, that a committee of 11
be appointed to effect a permanent or
ganization to act with other organiza'
tions of like character in securing the re
forms so earnestly desired.
The Tax Will Be Collected.
Washington, Jan. 12. Senator Gor
don of Georgia in a conversation with
a senator said : "The defeat of the ap
propriation will not defeat the collection
of the income tax. Under section 29
all persons and corporations with in'
comes above $3,500 are required to make
returns, according to the form pre
scribed by the revenue department, to
the secretary of the treasury. Those
who hope to escape payment of the in
come tax through the failure of congress
to make the appropriation asked for,
and who are thus led to neglect making
their returns at the- time fixed by law
win una tneinseives involved in oU per
cent heayier taxes and be' compelled to
pay them."

A Secret.

that a bad complexion is due to a dis
