Calcutta, Dec. 28. The legislative
council has paseed bills amending the
acts of 1894 by adding cotton yarns and
fabrics to the list of imported articles
dutible at 5 per cent, and levying a 5 per
ent excise duty upon goods manufact
ured in India. .

London, Dec. 28. A dispatch to the
Times from Shanghai says that the
Japanese, after four hours' fighting De
cember 23d, with a force of 6,000 Tong
Haks, suppressed the rebellion at Hal
Chin, in the province of Whang Haido,
where the rebels had deposed the gov
ernor and installed one of their number
in his place. The Japanese have also
dispereed the Tong-Haks, who held the
Corean garrison at Chullado.

Guatemala's Envoy la Mexico.
v City op Mexico, Dec. 28. The Guat
emalan envoy was received today bv
President Diaz, attended by all the min
isters and principal generals. The min
ister's speech was pacific. President
Diaz, in replying, eaid :
"Your visit will be pleasing in any
event, but it will be still more so if it
put an end to the state of alarm existing
between Mexico and Guatemala."

for Liverpool.where it will be transferred

Bloody Work of Burglars.
Woodville, I. T., Dec. 28. The house
of Dr. iR. Burd was rohbed by three
armed men last night. Burd was not ai
home, and, to force Mrs. Bard to tell
where the valuables were, they choRed
her until blood ran from her mouth.
When she became insensible from the
torture, the men ransacked the house
and secured $750 in money. Mrs. Burd
will die.
