DECEMBER 21.1894 WHERE IS MOSES t If, as the free-silver advocates assert, Oregon is really in favor of free silver. ' then it is easily admitted that Senator Dolph should not be re-elected. Bat is Oregon in favor of free silver? If so, what kind of free silyer? At what ratio, and on what terms shall it be coined? The Sun; which may be rated as the leading silver paper of the etate, wants one system ; Sidney Dell, who has written a book on the subject, an other. Then, of the two congressmen and Senator Mitchell, whom the silver advocates claim as theirs which of their ideas will be adopted? Senator Mitch ell is in favor of silver at a ratio of 16 to 1; Congressman Ellis wants' Ja dollar's worth of silver in a dollar," and (if we remember rightly) Congressman Her mann wants more silver in the dollar Now, if it is true that the free s:lver- ites are in the majority, yet is each fac tion in" la very small minority. The silver question, with the whole congress and president advocating free silver, would be no nearer a settlement than it is now. "The difference between the factions would be more radical than that be tween the republicans and democrats on on the tariff question . We cheerfully admit that our intellect is not equal to perfecting a financial system for the world, or even for that . email portion of it over which floats the American flag. There are 190 other publications in the state, the editors of most of which know just as much about the subject as we do. We want to see plenty of money in . circulation good nioney regardless of its color, for we need it in our business. We are there fore, willing to' follow the first financial . Moses ;. but we first want to feel that he is Moses, and to at least believe that he will not keep us forty years in the wil derness. We are ready to go into the corral as soon ' as we may be convinced that we belong in it ; but until we are, we prefer the wild freedom of the hills, LARGER THAN THEY "SEEM The Portland Sun is usually fair and gentlemanly in its treatment of the press of the state. Yet it allowed one of its correspondents yesterday to use two thirds of a column, on which it set its seal of approval by providing it with a . "scare" head, and which contained absolutely nothing in the way of news or argument. The principle portion of the space' was used in attacking the Hood Kiver Glacier for suggesting that Senator Dolph should be re-elected, and in indulging in sneers at the small coun try papers of the state. The ' corres pondent does not, and the editor of the Sun may not realize the power of the country press, the little newspapers of which many, as the Scotch say "make a muckle." Let the "Bungtown Bugle" and "Siwash Snorter," as the erudite correspondent calls them, and the other little papers of the state combine, and thev can yield more influence on the destiny of the state than all the galaxy of newspapers in Portland, the Sun in cluded. That paper, indeed, not only falls into the error which it" continually chides the Oregonian for, but goes to the extremes in that error. Is the Sun to use its own . expression, trying to read those who do not agree with it out of its party? We might suggest that trite aaying to our esteemed contemporary, "Despise not small things the small est toe has the largest corn." In looking into the future of the wheat growers of America, the situation would seem dark indeed but for one promise that must ultimately be ful filled. That the foreign market can . never again be made to yield old-time prices, is resonably certain, since the Argentine has become so formidable a rival, and that other rival, Siberia, will Boon become yet more formidable than the Argentine. That promise is increase-ol population. It will not be many years until,' with our present rate f growth, we can consume all the wheat we grow. The time will come, in the not very remote future, when land values will again advance, and when the prices of agricultural products will also be enhanced. . The report of James Creel man, the special correspondent of the New York World (than whom there is none more reliable) establishes the fact beyond all controversy, that the Japanese army on capturing Port Arthur, was guilty of the most savage . barbarism. The inhabi tants of the place were brutally mur dered and horribly mutilated. The sympathies of the civilized world, which have been with the 'Japs ever since the war commenced, are being awakened for the Chinese. Japan has made a serious mistake, and one that if repeat ed, may cause interference by the En- 1 ropean governments. A man connected with the new paper for the development of the immigrant business was arrested this morning charged with stealing wood from the K. of P. It is pleasing to know that the reputation of the newspaper fraternity will not suffer, as the wood was sawed. Captain McKay, of the Dundee whaler Terra Nova, related to Captain Guy a story which seems almost like an old time romance, says the London Times. It - would appear that about the middle of September an unusually large whale was fallen in with and killed by the boats of the Terra Nova. The fish was brought alongside, and the work of cut ting up was commenced. Some obstruc tion was discovered to have lodged in the blubber, and on search being made an old harpoon was extracted. The weapon bore the name of the whaler Jean or Bo'ness, and was dated forty years back. Old Arctic navigators . will remember that the Jean was lost in the ice some thirty-seven years ago. The steel was bright as the day the harpoon was made, and the whale seemed to have sustained no injury from it. As may be imagined, the finding of such a relic was the subject of much speculation and talk among the members of the various crews. Specimen cases. ' S. H. Clifford, New Cassel, Wis.i was troubled with neuralgia and rheumatism, his stomach was disordered, his liver was affected to an alarming degree, ap petite fell away, and he was terribly re duced in flesh and strength. Used three bottles of Electric Bitters and seven boxes of Bucklen's Arnica Salve, and his leg is sound and well. John Speaker, Cata waba, 0., had five large fever sores on his leg, doctors said he was incurable. HE'S COMING!
