COMPARATIVE PRICES OF ANI MALS USED FOR FOOD. A study of prices in a great market is interesting and useful to producer and consumer. Present market quotations for cattle, hogs and sheep at the Union Stock yards, Chicago, suggest some use ful lessons as well as some things hard to satisfactorily explain. The variation in prices for cattle shows a wonderful difference, owing to quality. The highest price in the report at hand is $6.40. Few sell at this price, or even at any price, within a dollar of this. A considerable number, however, sell at from $4.50 to $5. A much larger num ber, not counting inferior stock, sell at from $3.25 to $4. One fact will never be satisfactorily explained to feeders, and that is why good cows and heifers should sell at much lower prices than do steers of similar quality. At present $3.50 is a hiffh rjrice for a ccw or a heifer of really good quality. Calves sell at lower prices than good fat cattle. Many in ferior cattle are being forwarded now, some selling as low as $1 per 100 pounds The Quotations of prices for "cannere' do not inspire one with a great desire to eat canned beef. tv norinHnn in nrices for hogs is much less than that for cattle. Exclud ing culls, the greatest difference in price in rerjort at hand is V0 cents per 100 pounds. At present choice heavy hogs outsell the best light. Figa and very liirht hoes sell at relatively low prices partly because of excessive supplies these classes. Mutton ought to be the cheapest meat for consu mers. The highest price quoted for sheeD is $3.25 per 100 pounds, and the great mass of the sheep forwarded eell at considerably less than $3. Lambs reach a somewhat higher price up to $4 norinn nnnnda in extreme cases. At M this eeason the pelt with its fairly grown wool is an important factor. Receipts have been unusually large. These low prices should stimulate the demand for mutton. Prairie Farmer. of A FOOLISH CONTEST. SlOO Reward, SIOO. The readers of this paper will be pleased to learn that there is at least one dreaded disease that science has been able to cure n all its stages and hat is Catarrh. Hall's Catarrh Cure is the only positive cure now known to the medical fraternity. Catarrh being a con stitutional disease, requires a constitu tional treatment. Hall's Catarrh Cure s taken internally, acting directly upon the blood and mucous eurfaces of the system, thereby destroying the founda tion of the disease, and giving the pa tient strength by building up the consti tution and assisting nature to do its work. The proprietors have so much faith in its cultivative powers, that they offer One Hundred Dollars for any case that it fails to cure. Send for list of Testimonals. Address. F. J. SnessorC YrecorG (Correctly spelled meatus) The republicans in congress have noti- those candidates who were defeated for a seat in that body, and who are desirous of contesting the election of their oppon ents, that they must rely upon the just ness of their individual causes, and not opon the overwhelming republican majority. This is perfectly right and proper. It is a pity that Mr. Estee, the late republican candidate for governor of California, did not gauge his conduct by that same rule. Had he done so he would not have inaugurated a contest with his successful opponent.. Sir. Estee may get the office, but if -he does it will be because he has the might instead of the rieht on his side. The election went overwhelmingly republican throughout the state, with the exception of Mr. Estee, and that he was not carried along with the tide was his own fault. A gen eral suspicion that Mr. Estee was en tirely too friendly to the Southern Pa cific was what left Mr. Estee in the shade; that it was and not fraud as he would now have the public believe. The veidict in. the case of "Banco" Kelley, tried in Multnomah county for the murder of George Sayres, is not proving satisfactory to the public. In deed there i9 no reason why it ehould. If Kelley killed Sayres it was a deliber ate, wilfull, malicious and premeditated murder. It was that or it was nothing. The evidence showed that Kelley de liberately planned and coolly executed the murder, and he should have been found guilty of murder in the first degree. 'That or nothing. The verdict was sim ply a compromise forced on seven of the jurymen by the other five, for the seven either had to report a disagreement or else yield. They took into consideration the expense to the county of another trial and finally consented to the lesser verdict, as the best that could be done, It really looks as though jurors grow more tenderhearted as criminals become more hardened, and the more aggravated . the crime, the more chary tne jurors about seeing the full penalty inflicted Kelley should either be hanged or ac quitted.
