A SAB SYSTEM.
The money question ia up, and it will
stay jap 'until some definite eolation of
the matter is arrived at. Under the
present system there is nothing to pre
vent the money kings raiding the TJ. S,
. treasury any time. There is nothing to
prevent them converting every dollar of
silver or paper money of these United
State into gold-bearing bonds. All that
is necessary is to draw oat gold for
paper money, reduce the reserve fund bo
that another band issue will be required,
sell the gold back , lor bonds, and con-
' tinue this process until all the paper and
silver is in the treasury, and the coun
try has nothing but gold left in circula
tion. A financial system that leaves the
money of the people, no matter whether
gold or silver, in such a shape as to be
cornered and speculated upon : by the
money kings, is one to be speedily -aban
doned. We must have some safer ar
rangement than he present, and con
gress should turn its attention to solving
the problem.
GOAT AND FOX IN THE WELL
; A fox, who was a great rogue, fell
down a deep -well. 'Just then a goat
came up who had a mind to slake his
thirst, so he said to the fox, "Is the well
sweet one?" "Sweet!'' says the fox;
"It is the best well I have drank from
for a long time. ' Come and try it." At
this the goat leapt in, and the fox, who
put his feet on the goat's horns, sprang
out and said : "If you had as much
brain' as you have beard, you would
"look ere you leap."- "
-. Such was the fable of the good Esop
' 2,509 years ago. And yet, as we peruse
. the list of bills introduced by the popu
list members of congress at its la6t ses
sion, the conclusion is irresistably forced
on us that he was acquainted with
Senator Peffer.
The Oregon Pacific is- not now troub
ling our Crook county friends much.
The Prineville Review instead1 of mourn
ing over the long delay in ' doing any
thing with that road or keeping up a
perennial disturbance about it as our
Astoria neighbors do, deliberately goes
to work to prove that the coming of the
railroad would be a misfortune, and that
the longer it is delayed the better for
Prineville. 'The Review makes a good,
strong argument on its position, too, and
besides has the satisfaction of knowing
that its position cannot be disproved by
facts for some time to come. .
As a result of the recent elections,
three women will take their seats in the
Colorado house of representatives, at the
next 'session of the state assembly, and a
woman will occupy one of the commodi
ous offices in the new capitol building
that of state superintendent of public
instruction. Considerable curiosity is
expressed as to what these feminine
office-holders "will do with their oppor
tunity." As for us, we feel sure that
now, as in the past, women will be found
equal to the occasion. Mitchell Monitor.
Tift money question is causing whole
lots of hard words between the advocates
of the different systems. . As for us,
we don't care which measure is adopted,
gold, silver or currency, ust so that the
one dollar will purchase as much as the
other dollar, either in this country or
elsewhere. Individually the only differ
ence it would make to us should free
coinage be adopted and the present
dollars be worth oniy fifty cents, we
would have two dollars instead of the
lonesome we keep in our jeans.
A bronze statue of William Penn has
. been placed on top of the city hall tower
of Philadelphia. Penn has always been
held up . to the American school chil
dren as an exceptionally pure and just
man ; yet the truth is he was an utter
hypocrite and a large sized sneak. His
tory, especially as furnished in the school
books, is generally history only by
courtesy.
The Salem Statesman is authority for
the unqualified statement that Governor
elect Lord is not and will not be a can
didate for United States senator. ' This
leaves the field for Hon. C. W. Fulton or
Senator Dolph, with possibilities for
Hon.vT. H. Tongue and Hon. Binger
Hermann.-'
"Rev. Grant of Portland believes that
all church property, except the church
edifice should be taxed. . It is safe to

in the county agree with him. -

"When 8 was a Boy,"
Writes Postmaster J. C. Woodson,
' Forest Hill, W. Va., "I had a bron.
. ciiial trouble of such a persistent
and stubborn character, that, the
doctor pronounced it incurable with
ordinary medicines, and advised
me to try Ayer's Cherry Pectoral.
I did so," and one bottle cured me.
For the last fifteen years, I have
used this preparation with good
effect whenever I take"
A Bad Cold,

who keep it in the house all the time,
not considering it safe to be with
out it." ,
"I have teen using Ayer's Cherry
Pectoral in my family for 30 yeara, with
the most satisfactory results, and can
cheerfully recommend it as being espe
cially adapted to all pulmonary com
plaints. I have, for many years, made
pulmonary and other medicines aspecial
study, and I have come to the conclusion
that Ayer's Cherry Pectoral occupies a
position pre-eminent over other " medi
