Against Women In Politics.
Atlanta, Ga., Dec. 8. By a vote of
77 to 65 the legislature has set its face
against any effort in the way of bringing
. women into politics. Governor, Atkin
son, on assuming office, was anxious to
make Miss Helen Dortch, a good-looking
literary woman of 18 years, his pri
vate secretary. It was found that the
preceding legislature had conferred a
military rank upon that office. Through
.Representative isomeniiet uovernor At
kinson then sought to have an act
. Daased making women eligible to hold
statehoase clerkships, with the view ofr
appointing Miss Dortch to the place of
assistant librarian, and. it 'was this
measure which the legislature squelched
yesterday. Grand Master Shannon, of
the Masonic fraternity, has offered Gov
. ernor Atkinson the use of his name for
the appointment, with the view of con
ferring the place upon Mies Dortch as
his agent.
Standard Oil Magnates.
Tyi.eb, Tex., Dec. 8. Attorney-General
Henry said today :
"I am not" at liberty to give out the
precise conree that this state will pursue
in the Standard Oil prosecution. As to
the situation in New York, we will, try
to remove any defect in the requisition
papers, and will have counsel to repre
sent us, on Governor Hogg's application.
Should our requisition to the governor of
Missouri be refused, the same course will
e pursued. Aside from the supposed
defect in the papers, the governor of New
York certainly has no ground for refus
ing to grant the requisition. The efforts
of defendants to avoid coming to Texas
will be futile."
A Chicago DlTlae Eloped With tlie Wife
of Another Man.
Chicago, Dec. 8. It was discovered
today that Conrad Haney, one of the
most prominent Chicago divines, has
eloped with Mrs. George W. Brandt,
wife -of the manager of a prominent bak
ing powder company. Haney is the
pastor of the aristocratic pnion church
' on Lake avenue, and has been recently
prominently spoken of as the successor
of Professor David Swing, tor the pastor
ate of Central church. He left a hand
some wife and four children destitute.
It is stated Brandt caught his wife and
the preacher yesterday at a down-town
hotel, and Brandt gave the minister
twelve hours to leave town. Hanley did
not wait, but flew, accompanied by Mrs.
Brandt. '
Treasury -Officials Pleased.
Washington, Dec. 8. The slight, but
steadily sustained imppovement in
treasury finances since the various pro
visions of the new tariff law are becom
ing operative, and business being ad
justed to the changed tariff schedules
is very gratifying to treasury officials
This improved condition is shown in the
daily receipts, which, for the month of
December to date, aggregate $6,500,000,
nearly $1,000,000 a day, Sundays exclud
ed. Of the receipts, $3,635,523 have
been from customs, an excess of $750,
000 over the same period last December,
thus indicating a total revenue from this
source for the month of December be
tween ' $12,000,000 and $13,000,000,
against $10,000,000 during November
last.

Ratification and Taking Effect of the
Chinese Immigration Treaty.
Washington, Dec. 8. The president
today signed a proclamation announcing
the ratification and taking effect of the
new Chinese immigration treaty. Sea
retary Greshem's proclamation is pre
cisely similar to those usually issued in
such cases, and is confined to a recital of
' the text of the treaty, with notice to the
public of its ratification. -
Shot Through the Bead.
Skattle. Dec. S. A Walla Walla
special says : Warden J. A. Coblentz,
Highest of all in Leavening Power.
of the state penitentiary, shot himself
through the head at 5 :30 this evening.
He had been asked to resign by the pen
itentiary commissioners, and it is sup
posed killed himself because he feared
the humiliation of removal. '
Coblentz was formerly acting collector
of customs, 'and about four years since
killed Holt, the smuggler, and was
severely blamed for it. He also killed a
man in Arkansas before he came here.
He was in the government employ in
Arkansas. .
Turkish Line of Deiense.
New York, Dec. 8. Communications
from the porte to the British foreign
office indicate that the line of defense to
be pursued regarding the Armenian atro
cities will be that the Armenians and
Kurds both engaged in a ciyil war ; that
outrages were committed on both sides.
Turkish regulars were called upon to
suppress the feud, and finding the Ar
menians entrenched, called upon them
to surrender. The Armenians refused,
and were thereupon attacked by the
troops, who were at first repulsed.
It is admitted that a number of Arme
nians who. surrendered upon being of
fered pardon for their share in the dis
turbances were executed, but the story
that fortified villages were stormed by
the troops, that they might murder the
male inhabitants and outrage the
women, are denied. . Sekki Pashi, who
is in command of the force that is said
to have committed the outrages, has
caused the women who were taken pris
oners by the Turkish troops to be closely
guarded, The informant, referring to
the subject, says if the porte shall fail to
punish the guilty parties the only alter
native will be European occupation of
Armenia.
Reed's Boom Growing.
Washington, Dec. 8. Reed's boom
for the presidency grows. There was
gossip about the house today that Tom
Piatt had intimated a preference for
Beed, and this, coupled with the under
standing that Quay has come out for the
Maine statesman, served to give Beed
stock a boom. Piatt and Qua; opposed
Harrison at Minneapolis, and in the
minds of republican leaders there is no
liklihood of their support being captured
for the ex-president.
Storm In the Azores.
London, Dec. 8. A dispatch from St.
Michael's reports that a violent hurri
cane passed over, the Azores islands.
Pont a del Gada (the largest town of the
Azores) breakwater demolished by float
ing rock. A crane on the dock was swept
away, and the German brig Adelbeid
was totally lost with part of her crew.
The British steamer Ituni was also badly
damaged, and the British steamer Ful
well broke adrift and was damaged in a
collision.
Acts of Brigandage.
Constantinople, Dec. 8. The porte
received dispatches from the governor of
Van, dated November 29, December 6,
announcing acts of brigandage there,
and the capture of a part of a band of 20
Armenians who wore the Kurdish dress,
and were armed with modern rifles.
Six of the prisoners belong to the Ar
menian revolutionary committee. Sev
eral were killed and wounded on both
sides during a skirmish, previous to the
capture of the brigands. '
Free SlWer Coinage.
Lansing, Mich., Dec. 8. A largely at
tended " conference of free-silver demo
crats of the state, including some of the
most influential members of the' party,
adopted resolutions here yesterday
pledging every honorable effort to get
the party in this state to adopt free sil
ver coinage as the leading isBue in the
next campaign. An executive commit
tee of twenty-one was named and an
organization effected.
Navy Surgeon Dead.

CREAM OF TARTAR TREE.
Some Queer Things Developed In Nature's
' Laboratory.
Nature's laboratory ' is ceaselessly
working, developing and storinir up
products for the use of mankind at
large. In the vegetable kingdom this
is especially noticeable, and if man
sometimes only succeeds, after much
experiment and work, in making the
plant give up its useful properties, at
other times and these are of frequent
occurrence he' finds the product , al
ready manufactured, and requiring
but a small amount of preparation to
render it fit for utilization.
To this latter" category of plants
yielding ready-made products, says the
New York Ledger, the -cream-of -tartar
trees may be said to belong. They are
members of the genus Adansonia, of
the natural order Bombaceos. Until
within the past few years it was
thought that only one species could
rightly claim the title of the cream of
tartar tree the Adansonia Gregorii,
the gouty-stem tree of Northern. Aus
tralia. Recent researches have, how
ever, proved that the baobab Adanso
nia digitata of Senegal contains near
ly two per cent, of free tartaric acid
and nearly twelve per cent, of bitar
trate of potassium. The acid is found
in the farinaceous pulp sui-rotrnding- the
seed, and has at all times been highly
esteemed by travelers, who mix it with
a little water in ordfer to make a re
freshing beverage.
Raising Cotton in Egypt.
The cotton fields of Egypt are arti
ficially watered about eight times dur
ing cultivation, generally by taking
the Nile water between the ridges on
which the plants are growing. The
general ripening of the pods begins in
September and. the cotton is ready for
the first picking in October.
Shortening Sail on Land.
"I've never been to sea," said Mr.
Swyzzlby, "and so I've never seen 'em
shorten sail in a storm at sea; but I
think I can form a pretty good idea of
how it's done, for I live in a flat, and
I've seen the people take in their wash
ing . on washdays when a shower came
up." . -
