ICLE," The Dalles, Oregon.
AVEDNESDAY. - NOVEMBER 28. 1894
THA NKSGI VJNG.
Tomorrow is Thanksgiving day, and
no doubt all of ue, if we are reasonable',
can find something to give thanks for.
Poverty may pinch or business cares
worry, but if ench in tnrn will compare
hie lot with that of persons less fortunate
than himself instead of envying those
who are apparently belter situated, there
will be found abundant room for thanks
giving. - None of us are so badly situated
but that we can eee others in worse con
dition. And outside of our individual
reasons for feeling thankful, collectively
we may all rejoice that we live in a
country where we enjoy the fullest re
ligious and political liberty ; where per
sistent industry is sure to result in com
petence, and where there are no limits
to the possibilities of any citizen. The
Chronicle feels thankful for many
things; for a large and increasing circu
lation; for generous patronage, and for
the bright future dawning for the people
of Eastern Oregon. It hopes - that to
morrow each and every one of its, in
numerable readers, will not only enjoy
the necessary Thanksgiving dinner, but
that each will appoint himself a com
mittee of one to see that the widow, the
orphan and the needy are made glad by
abundant good cheer, that they too may
rejoice and give thanks.
REMOVE THE BEAM.
Robert R. Whaley, a member of the
Seventh Day Adventist church, '. at
Church Hill,. Maryland, was committed
to prison Monday,. November 5th, for
"doing bodily labor on the Lord's day,
commonly called Sunday." It was con
ceded that Whaley kept Saturday as his
Sabbath or Sunday and abstained from
labor on that day.
We can find no reason why the dis
tinction should be drawn as to keeping
Saturday, for it is the keeping of every
Seven th Day to observe Sunday. Never
theless if it is a matter ot conscience
with the Adventist sect, it seems pretty
hard that they should be put in jail for
not keeping two days in the week.
While this state of affairs exists, it is
just as well that this government refrain
from too harsh condemnation Of the
Turks.
JtOVGH ON THE HELPLESS.
Eastern railroads are beginning to de
duct 2 per cent from stock dividends on
sccount of- the income tax, and stock
holders are aghast. This example will
have to be followed by all corporations,
from bands to building and loan associa
tions. In this way the tax will reach
thousands of persons whoee incomes are
not one-fourth of $4,000 per year, old
men and widows and orphans, whose
saving or inheritances are invested in
stock. All must pay tribute to the pop
ulist Moloch. Oregonian.
We were never before under the im
pression that the great soulless coi pora
tions of which we read were composed of
the widow, the fatherless and the help
less. We had supposed that business
men, and devilish aggressive business
men at that, controlled these corpora
tions. But then, come to think of it,
Rockefeller is an orphan, Astor is get
ting old, and Mrs. Stanford is a widow.
The Oregonian thinks we have some
queer laws here. This is true, but they
can hardly be considered curiosities be
side some examples from Multnomah
and Clatsop. To illustrate, Judge Taylor
sentenced a prisoner to one year in the
pen for killing a man, and another two
years for stealing a salmon. In Mult
nomah county the cases are so numerous
that one would hardly know which to
select. . Emil Webber's murder might
do for one. However that does not alter
the correctness of the Oregohian's crit
icism. The Seattle Post-Intelligencer gives up
all hope of the Ivanhoe and the survival
of Fred J. Grant. A perusal of the
obituary convinces one that the Intelli
gencer has met with irreparable loss.
A Curious Phenomenon.
Leipzig has a sensation just now in
the person of Strazini, who has kept the
medical profession in a state of excite
ment ever since he made his appearance
there, says the New York Press. Stra
xini astonishes his audiences by first
eating a soup which consists of sawdust,
plentifully mixed with coal oil. The
mess is set afire, and after the flames
have been extinguished Strazine eats
the peculiar mixture, ladling it out with
a epoon. He follows this up with bit
ing piece after piece from the lamp
chimney, crushing the glass between his
- teeth and swallowing it. He washes it
down with a little water. For desert
he munches pieces of hard coal, peat,
washing soda, tallow candles, pieces of
plaster cast and .bricks, boots, clay
pipes, and seems to enjoy the conglom
eration. All this is eaten at one meal
and In quick succession. A little water
is the only beverage in which he indulges
during that meal. Strazini asserts that
he does not feel the slightest discomfoit
from this unusual diet and certainly
looks it. When he has finished his din
ner of ceramics, he pours down two cups
of coal oil, throws his bead back and
holds a lighted match to his mouth.
There is a deep, puffing sound, and a
flame three faet long leaps from his
mouth. After eating Strazini gives an
exhibition of danciug, as wonderful as
what has gone before. He does it with
bare feet in a box filled with debris and
shreds of champagne bottles, lamp
shades, wine glasses, etc. Into this he
diqes with his feet, jumps about in all
directions, and ends by burying bis head
in the broken glass, The strange part of
it is that he comes out witbent a scratch.
His cuticle seems to be as impervious to
such an onslaught as his stomach is to
sawdust and brick and burning coal oil.
Medical men from far and near have in
terviewed this curious phenomenon, but
are unable to give an explanation of bis
wonderful performances.

The readers of this paper will ' be
pleased to learn that there is at least one
dreaded disease that science has been
able to cure in all its stages and that is
Catarrh. Hall's Catarrh Cure is the
only positive cure now known to the
medical fraternity. Catarrh being a con
stitutional disease, requires a constitu
tional treatment. Hall's Catarrh Cure
is taken internally, acting directly upon
the blood and mucous surfaces of the
system, thereby destroying the founda
tion of the disease, and giving the pa
tient strength by building up the consti
tution and assisting nature to do its
work. The proprietors have so much
faith in itscultivative powers, that they
offer One Hundred Dollars for any case
that it fails to cure. Send for list of
