THURSDAY. - NOVEMBER 8. 1894
THEY GOT THE CHICKENS
The emiling countenance of the demo
crats would be bewildering if it were not
explained by the' fact that most of them
were of the Cleveland wing of the dem
ocracy. The defeat of Hill, takes the
sting from the defeat of the party. A
prominent democrat said to us this
morning: "Our party could not afford
Jo eee Hill elected. He was a traitor to
the party, and to have elected him would
have been to put a premium on treach
ery." , From a democratic standpoint there is
considerable philosophy in this but when
one looks at the wreck of the party,' and
sees Hill calmly eurveying the ruins
from his seat in the United States senate,
the conviction that the party paid a big
price for its whistle is forced upon one.
A man down at Mt. Pulaski, Illinois,
some thirty years ago, saw a prairie
chicken light on his wheat stack near
bis barn. He at once became possessed
of; a desire to kill that chicken and eat
him. He accordingly procured his shot
gun and1 shot the unsuspecting fowl.
While he was at the house with the de
ceased bird the fire from the gunwad got
its work in on the wheat stack, which
was soon in a blaze, likewise the barn
corn crib and granary were consumed
with their contents, including four valu
able work horses and nearly all the farm
machinery. As the owner mournfully
gazed at the smoking ruins, a smile lit
up his features and he remarked, "Well,
by gosh, I got the chicken."
ENGLISH COMMENT.
The London Times says: "Although
it was generally expected that the dem
ocrata would be beaten, nobody antici
pated a rout so complete. From present
indications it seems doubtful whether
McKinleyism will be revived, but with a
large fighting majority there is no guar
antee that the republican party will not
aim at restoring the McKinley tariff.
The Daily News says : "The lepubli-
cans have come into power ' on the
strength of discontent felt at. the disuse
of the democratic party's opportunities
The democrats dallied with their
chances, and the public opinion turned
in a tumult against them. . Civilization
everywhere will welcome the overthrow
of Tammany Hall J
The election Taeeday was like the
boy's cake, it "lasted pretty quick."
The returns that night were so convinc
ing that all interest in the result ceased.
II was a victory that left no questions to
be asked, no guesses to be made, no
speculations to be indulged in. Now
that it is over, the press of the country
can turn its attention to the local needs.
We shall endeavor to do so, and to de
vote more space to matters pertaining to
Oregon in general and Wasco county
in particular.
It will be observed that the ' imputa
tion upon the chastity of Mr. Budd did
. not hurt him before the people of Cali
fornia. They who use this kind of cam
paign arguments often are surprised at
their effect. Oregonian. These are
words of wisdom ; the profound convic
tion of one who has been there, and ai
entitled to unquestioning belief.
The latest returns give the republican
an overwhelming majority in the house.
A( last accounts the democrats will have
100, the republicans 249 to 251 and the
populists 6. At the same time it: is
quite certain that the republicans have
carried enough states heretofore demo
cratic to give them control of the eenate,
or at least to make it a tie.
History repeats itself in the case of
Congressman Wilson, who was the
father of the last tariff bill and who is
beaten in his attempt to be re-elected,
The same thing happened to Wm. Mc
Kinley alter the passage of his tariff bill,
and he is now one of the biggest men in
his party. : Let Mr. Wilson console him
self with this if he can.
An Important Sleeting.
The United States Pomological Society
will meet in San Francisco next Febru
ary, and will upon the conclusion of
their meeting visit Portland, where they
will attend a meeting of the State Hor
ticultural Society. At the same time
the Northwestern Fruitgrowers Associa
tion will meet with -them. As the
fruitgrowers of the entire United . States
will be represented, the meeting prom
ises to be a very important one. : Ar
rangements are already being made to
receive the' , visitors. Among other
things it is especially desirable to show
them what Oregon can do in the matter
of growing fruits, and a fine collection
will be made. Every fruitgrower in
Oregon should take an interest in the
matter, and by sending samples of such
fruits as are obtainable at that time, as
sist in astonishing, not only the visitors,
but the Portland people, with the mag
nificence of the display.

and have induced many to use it.
" Thirty-five years ago this Spring, I was,
run down by hard work and a succession of
colds, which made me so feeble that it was
an effort for me to walk. I consulted the
doctors, but kept sinking lower until I had
given up all hope of ever being better.
Happening to be in a store, one day, where
medicines were sold, the proprietor noticed
my weak and sickly appearance, and, after
a few questions as to my health, recom
mended me to try Ayer's Pills. I had little
faith in these or any other medicine, but
concluded, at last, to take his advice and try
a box. Before I had used them all, I was
" very much better, and two boxes cured me.
I am now 80 years old; but I believe that
