Governor McKinley ia "swinging 'round the circle" and is meeting with such an ovation as is seldom accorded a public man. This shows the extent of the interest of the people in the political and financial situation. William McKin ley is in no sense a great man. Dozens of republicans can be found who out-top him intellectually as far as Mt. Hood does the mountains around it. It is not the man whom the people delight to honor but the principles embodied in the bill which bears his name, and which typifies Americanism. The man repre sents the theory and practice of the re - publican party, and the enthusiasm with .which be is received demonstrates the feeling of the country. It is simply an endorsement of the principles of protec tion, and a condemnation of the theories of the democratic party. It is a grand ovation and Governor McKinley may well feel proud of it. Could the nomin ation for the presidency be made to morrow, Wm. McKinley would be the nominee without a doubt. But unfor tunately for him more than two years must elapse before that event, and in . that time his star will set. The same fate will perhaps follow the hopes of an abler man, Tom Reed of Maine, who is in our opinion the shrewdest politician and one of the ablest statesmen in the coun try. The Quays, the Camerons, the ' Clark son b nominate the president, and the fate of those who become prominent too early has always been defeat. It - was so with Webster, with Clay with Conkling and with Blaine. The rabble of little great men fell upon them and des troyed. But whoever the candidate may be, the public demonstrations, in dorsing tbe principles of the republican party, may well assure him of a phe nomenal vote in 1896. TO FEED THE DEAD. Three hacks loaded with our Chinese - population, and a bountiful supply of fireworks and eatables, went out to the graveyard this afternoon, it being tbe semi-annual feast of the dead. The cer emonies are interesting, but about the only intelligible thing a white man can decipher is the distribution of food and the sprinkling of tbe graves with China gin. A varnished pig, with not a plain , unvarnished -tail, holds the place of honor on these occasions, and used to be left in the cemetery, an offering to the dead, but in San Francieco the ir reverent hoodlums used to follow the procession and fill their unregenerate stomachs with the funereal hog and sweetmeats, so that the custom has been changed and the hog iB brought home to pad out the frontispiece of the live Celestial, . the offering now being only emblematical. The ceremonies conclude with the pouring of a libation of China gin on the graves, which is a putting of it where it will do the most good by doing the least barm. The whole proceeding seems to be a matter - of cold business with the Chinese, for they certainly have less veneration for the dead than any other nation on earth! Varnished pig, dog tripe, boneless duck and strings of linked sausage, long drawn! out, seem to our eyes a rather unappropriate offering for the spiritual comfort even of a Chinaman, but as the corpses seem to stand it without kick ing, it must be all right. We don't know anything about the book trust, but we do know that the present text books used in the schools have given general satisfaction, and while it may be possible to improve on them the time is not at hand for so doing. Let the times improve before we attempt to improve the school books. When Hoke Smith returns to Georgia, and Grover slumbers in innocuous des uetude, when labor finds employment and capital investment, then when' the head of the family is earning something it will be time to go into the school book question! Just now the heads of the families are devoting most of their time to hustling something to go into the school boy's stomach, and what goes into bis head, while vastly important, is nevertheless secondary. A Femal Anarchist Arrested. Chicago, Oct. 5. The police arrested a woman today at the union depot with a bundle of anarchist literature and sev eral circulars signed Lizzie Loftus, queen of the anarchists, ordering the destruc tion of Chicago on or about October 6. The woman was plainly dressed and of middle age. She refused to give an ac count of herself, and was locked up. The formula of Ayer's Sarsaparilla ia well known to tbe medical profession, and universally approved. The reputa tion of the firm guarantees excellence and uniformity in the medicine, and the world's experience for nearly half a cen tury has fully demonstrated its value. The demand in China for peacock feathers has grown steadily weaker. New York Tribune. SATURDAY. GET CATALOGUES OF SECRETARY And Make Tour Entries In Time Fat Yourself on Exhibition. Springs, Texas, thus speaks of Ayer's Fills: " Ayer's Pills are the best medicine I ever tried;' and, -In my judgment, no better general remedy could be devised. I have used them in my family and recommended them to my friends and employes for more than twenty years. To my certain knowledge, many cases of the following complaints have been completely and - - Permanently Cured by the use of Ayer's Pills alone: Third day chills,' dumb ague, bilious fever, sick headache, rheumatism, flux, dys pepsia, constipation, and hard colds. I know that a moderate use of Ayer's Pills, continued for a few days or weeks, as the nature of the complaint required, would he found an absolute cure for the disorders I have named above."
