proportion as poorer people. If they
did Portland would be in funds now.
The democratic plan of levying a tax on
incomes of the rich, is left in the shade
by the Portland plan which levies a tax
on the incomes of the poor. One would
think the Portland city . government
democratic but it isn't.

'THE CHRON
THURSDAY, SEPTEMBER 27, 1894
HILL FOR GOVERNOR.
David Bennett Hill has been nomin
ated by the democracy of New York for
the governorship. It had been expect
ed that Mr. Whitney would be named
for the place, and as a matter of fact he
was, but he peremptorily declined.
Hill did not seek the office, nor did he
desire the nomination; but the conven
tion being denied by Whitney went to
him unanimously, and would not ac
cept any refusal. Hill is forced into the
fight, and it is safe to say that he will
make the fight of bis life. His future
depends on the result cf this battle, for
if he wins it he will be the democratic
candidate for president as sure as the
sun rises. He has several times dem
onstrated his ability to carry the state,
and should he again do so, the nomina
tion for the presidency is his. This
is the natural logic of events.
The result will be a battle royal. It
will draw into it the entire strength of
the national parties, and in New York
will be concentrated the force of both
parties. David Bennett Hill has never
been downed, and if he is not whipped
in New York now, with the country in
arms against the Havemeyer bill and
the income tax, then indeed is he in
vincible. Senator John H. Mitchell of Oregon,
in a recent interview in which he gave
fully his ideas on silver, in part said :
"I am one of very many who believe
this government alone can maintain bi
metalism. But, waiving this for the
present, supposing it is conceded, for the
Bake of argument, it cannot, I am still
firmly of the opinion that the best way
of forcing an early international agree
ment, and as I believe, the only way, is
for this government to lead out agres
sively in favor of free coinage. There is
but one way, in my judgment, to com
pel England to agree to bimetalisra, and
this is by striking at her commerce.
Three-fourths and more of the ' com
merce of England is with silver using
countries. By the rehabilitation of sil
ver in this country, we secure that trade.
Bather than permanently lose this
trade, which has brought money into
England's coffers for many years, Eng
land and Western Europe would give
these silver using countries the same
price for silver in exchange for mer
chandise that we pay them for it, and
in thia way, possibly, international bi
metaligm .may be brought about; but,
in my judgment, just as long as this
country boycotts silver and refuses to
recognize it as a money metal and treat
it as a commodity, just so long will the
consummation of art international mon
etary agreement be deferred."
It seems from the dispatches that
Japan has determined to capture Pe
king, as she is gathering an immense
army for an attack on Moukden. With
this stronghold in their possession, one
half the job of capturing the Chinese
capitol will be completed. China is
utterly disorganized and is unable to
protect itself against the vigorous attacks
of her wiry foes. It will be a matter of
surprise it Peking is not captured by the
Japs, provided always that the powers
of Europe do not interfere:
The O. R. & N. Co. has decided to
immediately rebuild the wheat ware
house at Albina which was burned Sun
day. The new building will be 450 by
100 feet. This action on the part of the
company will be good news to both
grain growers and shippers. The fire
has destroyed so much of the wharves
that without other facilities are pro
vided at once, the shipment of grain
would be seriously impeded.
Fitzsimmons having whipped Cree
don, again challenges Corbett. The
latter replies that Fitz must whip Steve
O'Donneil before he will talk to him.
While Corbett is a wonder, the people
generally are coming to the conclusion
that bis fighting qualities are an in
fringement on the long-distance tele
phone. Bare knuckles at 2,000 miles is
about the best Corbett seems capable of.
The official weather bureau did good
work recently in predicting the cyclone
which yesterday swept over Florida.
The forecast was made two days in ad
vance of the storm, and those residing
on the islands and along the coast were
satisfied of the coming of a heavy tidal
wave. Had it not been for this timely
warning, hundreds of lives would have
been lost.
Portland has been driven into adopt
ing a license system by two causes, one
being the extravagance of the city dads,
who spent more money than they had,
and the other is the general dodging of
taxes by the property owners. It is not
oar pie, and we are not interested in the
settlement of the matter; but it is a
notorious fact, not only in Portland, but
all over the country, that property
owners in cities, that is those who are '
wealthy, do not pay taxes in the same
Vice-President Stevenson has been
quietly getting a strong tail-hold on the
democratic nomination for president;
but if he expects to hold on he will be
compelled to see New York go republi
can. This makes it a bard combination.
If Hill wins, Adlai gets left, and if Hill
loses, Adlai cannot hope to be elected
Poor Adlai.
The Nebraska Democrats.
Omaha, Sept. 26. Before the demo
cratic state convention was called to
order this afternoon, the situation was
chaotic. Bryan's free-silver forces had
selected . E. P. Smith for temporary
chairman, but the state central com
mittee held a meeting to name a man
who would represent the administra
tion. The free-silver men had also de
cided to have W. D. Oldham of Kearney
for permanent presiding officer, and
this, too, was a thorn in the side of the
administration men.
By a vote of 33 to 3 the central com
mittee decided to recommend Judge
Matt Miller of David City for temporary
chairman, and allow the conventien to
choose the permanent officer.
The convention was called to order at
S :25 by Chairman Euclid Martin, of the
state central committee. E. P. Smith
was made temporary chairman, after
Matt Miller had been named and had
withdrawn.

Nokth Yakima, Wash., Sept. 26. The
democratic leaders caucused until a late
hour in the night, and resumed this
morning. The indications are that E
J. Hill of Whatcom will be mad tem
porary chairman and Edward M. Heed
of Yakima temporary secretary. Mr.
Hill was consul to Montevideo during
Cleveland first administration and Ed
ward M. Reed is the editor of the Ya
kima Herald. . For permanent chair
man Judge N, T. Caton of Lincoln
county will probably be chosen. The
nominarion for congress from the West
will be tendered to Colonel James Ham
ilton Lewis of Seattle, and he will un
doubtedly accept. From the east side
the nomination lies between Blandford
of Walla Walla and Edminton of Day
ton. General Turner of Seattle and N
T. Caton of Sprague are th leading can
didates for the supreme bench.
Whitney Will Not Ran.
New York, Sept. 26. William C
Whitney was interviewed at Quarantine
today, and announced positively he
would under no circumstances accept
the democratic nomination for governor
He gave the impression his business
interests would not allow it. He said :
"There are plenty of better men in
the party than I. I regard David B.
Hill as the very best man for the place.
I think he would poll an enormous vote.
Of course I think the next governor will
be a democrat."
Cleveland "Not in Touch."
Buzzard's Bay, Mass., Sept. 26. A
representative of the press was the first
to notify the president of the result of
the democratic state convention in Sara
toga early this evening. Mr. Cleveland
was asked it he had anything to say as
to the nomination of David B. Hill for
governor. He replied :
"I am not in touch with the political
situation in New York, but no doubt the
convention has done the best thing pos
sible."
He asked about the other nominations
and if Senator Hill had consented to run

Wonderful Cures
performed by Ayer's Sarsaparilla, one
in particular being that of a little
daughter of a Church of England minis
ter. The child was literal) covered
from head to foot with a red and ex
ceedingly troublesome rash, from which
she had suffered for two or three years,
in spite of the best medical treatment
available. Her father was in great
distress about the case, and, at my
recommendation, at last began to ad
minister Ayer's Sarsaparilla, two bot
tles of which effected a complete cure,
much to her relief and her father's
delight. I am sure, were he here to-day,
he would testify in the strongest terms
as to the merits of
Ayer's Sarsaparilla
