THE WHEAT OUTLOOK.
The wheat situation gets no better.
The crop in the United States is con
siderably below the average, due to
many causes, the principle one of which
is the remarkably dry and hot weather
of the western states. Yet the low crop
conditions are of no benefit to prices. A
low yield is followed by the lowest price
ever known in this country. The crop
in Europe is hardly up to the average,
jet the enormous increase of the Argen
tine has Berved to make up for all de
ficiencies, and still leave the world with
a . surplus. This country will have
wheat to ship but as the world does not
need all that is grown, the question as to
who is to sell is determined by tho
answer of the other question, who will
sell for the smallest price. Our farmers
are in competition with the world, and
the price is such that unless cheaper
means of getting their products to the
world's markets can be found, they will
have to go out of the business of wheat
raising. At 30 cents a bushel there is
nothing in it, and the prospect af its
bringing more are decidedly discourag
ing. It is simply a question of who can
put the grain in the European market
the more cheaply. As far as the Pacific
coast is concerned, Argentine has much
the better of us in the matter of trans
portation, for her wheat can be laid
down in Liverpool for less than half the
freight rates that we must pay from
Portland or San Francisco. Besides the
Argentine is a rich prairie country,
through which railroads can be built at
a minimum price, labor is cheap and all
the elements combine to put her grain
growers in a position to undersell us
and still make handsome profits. Ar
gentine will have in the neighborhood
of 100,000,000 bushels to export next
spring, her crop ripening in January
and she is now shipping a crop of 77,000,
000 buBhels. From all of which it will
be seen that the wheat outlook is de
cidedly bad.
LOVE OR SELFISHNESS.
The killing of Mrs. Calvin by Stengele
and .bis subsequent suicide has caused
some strange comments by the press
One of our' neighbors says that "they
who call Stengele a fool have evidently
never themselves felt the tender passion."
The tender passion is indeed a queer
name for that feeling which causes a
man to murder the person whom be
claims to love. There is no tender pas
sion about it, no love about it, no any
thing about it except inordinate selfish
ness gone to seed. The man who loves
truly is above selfishness. Loves denies
itself. It places the happiness, the
pleasure, the well-being of the object
first and foremost above all things. If
Stengele bad killed himself only it might
be considered the result of despair at un
requited affections, but even then, when
properly analyzed it is but a matter of
excessive selfishness. The man who
kills himself because be cannot possess
some particular woman, exhibits on a
larger scale the same temper a spoiled
child does who bellowB himself hoarse
and dances the devil's tattoo with his
indignant heels because he is denied
something which he ehould not have.
After all, however, the woman who is
killed by a man for love, is far better off
than the one who marries that same
man because he loves her. We do not
pretend to be an expert on the subject
but if murder is an evidence of love,
why then our statute books need
revisions.
Mr. and Mrs. Vanderbilt continue to
air their private affairs. A few days ago
they were reported to have settled all
their difficulties, and expresed a mutual
desire to kiss and make up, but now the
sad intelligence is sent out that they
have had another row. It is a strong
comment upon the American disposi
tion to worship money, this Vanderbilt
quarrel. Outside of their vast wealth
they have nothing to lift them even into
the plane of mediocrity, and without
money their marital, or martial quarrel
would never be heard of outside of the
precinct in which they lived ; but be
cause they are exceedingly wealthy
their quarrels and bickerings are made
of national importance, and no doubt
among the npper ten thousand, where
they circulate, the quarrel is of intense
interest. Indeed among the common
people the subject is almost important
enough to go into the party platforms,
and we suggest to our democratic friends
that the old stereotyped plank about
"Home rule for Ireland" be amended to
read "Home rule for Mrs. Vanderbilt."
. The Walla Walla republicans are jubi
lant over the nominations made at Spo
kane, for the reason that the other can
didates are taken from parts of the state
that do not Interfere with the candi
dacy of Levi Ankeny of Walla Walla for
the United States senate. Mr. Ankeny
is no doubt a very fine, man, but the
fact that he is also a very rich one is
John D. Geoghegan of Vancouver is the
best and most available man for the
place, and he has more geography in bis
favor than even Mr. Ankeny. He is
pre-eminently the man for the place.
Governor Pennoyer has been invited to
California to stamp the state. . The good
governor can do it if any one can. He
stumped Oregon, also the democratic
party, and still has them up the stump.
The governor is a stumper from the new
Clearings and that is his best hold. As a
log roller, however, he isn't in it with
well Markley, for instance.
Children who are puny, pale, weak, or

Golden Medical Discovery. That builds
up both their flesh and their strength.
For this, and for purifying the blood.
there's nothing in all medicine that can
equal the "Discovery."
In recovering from "Grippe," or in
convalescence from pneumonia, fevers,
or other wasting diseases, it speedily
and surely invigorates and builds up the
whole system. As an appetizing, res

processes' of digestion and nutrition,
rouses every organ into natural action,
and brings back health and strength.
For allfdiseases caused by a torpid liver
or impure blood, Dyspepsia, Biliousness,
