THE STATE FAIR.
The Oregonian speaking of the state
fair says :
"There is really a fine exhibit at the
state fair. The chief products of the
state appear there at their best. Both
as to quantity and variety, the collection
is large enough for an index of the un-
equaled resources of Oregon. Products
of the mines, the mills, the orchards and
the fields are amply represented. There
is nothing trifling in the collection,
nothing merely bizarre; everything is
the most excellent and most substantial
of its kind. The arrangement through-
oat is such as to make a strong display.
The eold fiom Southern Oregon would
be a wonder to Eastern people ; the tex
tile exhibit in woolens, is very extensive
and very fine; the cattle and poultry
shows are all that could be desired, and
the general spread of cereals, fruits and
flowers is incomparable. The state agn
cultural college presents a varied ex
hibit of its products, both in agriculture
and mechanics, and some of the coun
ties, notably Jackson and Yamhill, have
large special displays. But the attend
ance of the people is not what it ought
to be. Two reasons may be assigned for
this : First, the decline of the social in
etinct of the former time, or per
haps its change of direction ; and Becond
the general depression of the times and
the scarcity of money. Nevertheless it
is a gratifying fact that the exhibit, both
in its quality and presentation, is far
better than any exhibit we used to have
in the old days of a different social life.
WHERE THEY ARE AT.
The Bilver question it is easily seen is
to be the one on which the next national
campaign is to be fought. It has forced
itself into the different state conventions,
and will cut a large figure in re-arrang
ing party lines. There are free silver denr
ocrats and republicans, anti-silver repub
licans and democrats. Ohio democrats
have declared for silver at the ratio of 16
to 1 and the Washington republican con
vention now in session at Spokane will
undoubtedly do the same thing. The
result will be the forcing of either one or
the other factions out of the parties and
the establishing either of two inimical
wings to each party or the creation of a
new one. The anti-silver men like
Noah's dove will find no resting place
for the soles of their feet, unless they
make it. Belonging to all parties they
yet have none in which they can meet.
It looks to us as though the silver agita
tion will necessarily cause the formation
of a single standard party.
CONCERNING VEST.
There is considerable truth in the fol
lowing from the East Oregonian, and
yet there are two sides to the question.
It says :
"Debt is a canker that rusts the sou!
of industry. It is the channel through
which the slave pays tribute to the
master. It is soil in which Shylocks
grow, on which knaves feed and fools
multiply. Countries and persons run
in debt in proportion to their ignorance,
stupidity or recklessness. 'Neither a
lender nor a borrower be,' said Shakes
peare, and Shakespeare knew what he
was talking about. The hard times of
today are due to debt. When debts are
being made values of everything ele
increase rapidly. Debt is the gambler's
device, the thief's hope, the knave's
tool, the manipulator's implement, all
at the expense of the honest, courage
ous man, who works for the love of it,
whose work produces wealth and whose
efforts are for" better conditions, better
times, better men."
THE SPIRIT OF 1776.
Referring to the effort made by the
American Protective Tariff League to
encourage the purchase of American
goods, the Wheeling, W. Va., Intelli
gencer, September 1st, said:
"The pledge is in harmony with the
spirit of 1776, when the patriotic women
of the colonies led an assault on the im
' portation of foreign wares, refused to
buy them and exhorted everybody to
follow their example. George Washing
ton was proud to wear a suit of home
made cloth when he was inaugurated as
president of the United States.
"In this day American labor produces
all that is necessary to anybody's com
fort. If everyaAmerican will resolve to
bay no foreign merchandise the sting
will be taken out of the new tariff meas
ure and the country will have a healthy
prosperity in spite of democratic inter
ference." The Japs are elated over their wonder
ful success, and already the cry of on to
Peking is being raised. It would not be
sdrprising should they undertake the
conquest of China, vast as the under
taking saems. The Japs are thoroughly
drilled, armed with modern implements
of war, trained in modern military war
fare, and are thoroughly imbued with
the war spirit. On the other hand, the
Chinese are devoid of love for the pres
ent government, are a thousand years
behind the times in their military equip
ment, and a large portion of the people
are ripe for revolt, 'and willing to tempo
rarily at least accept any change of gov
ernment in preference to that they now
have.
The Ohio democracy have declared
themselves in their platform in favor of
electing the United States senators by a
direct vote of the people. This is one
sensible thing the democrats nave done,
but this was caused by the desire to
censure Senator Brice, who was sitting
on the platform (not that of the party)
during the discussion. Congressman
Tom Johnson said that he did not be
lieve Brice bought his way into the sen
ate, and a Mr. Clarke said the United
States senate was a millionaire's club.
Children who are puny, pale, weak, or

and brings back health and strength.

In all that goes to strengthen and
build up the system weakened by disease
and pain, Ayer's Sarsaparilla is the
superior medicine. It neutralizes the
poison left in the system after diphtheria
