THE PASSING OF POLITICS.
The New York republican state plat
form indorses the separating of munici
pal from national and state politics,
taking the very sensible ground that for
city government politics are not needed,
avnd that a non-partisan ticket is better
calculated to furnish the city with good
officers. This is no doubt true. If pol
itics were left out ot the question, and
the right was conceded by all parties to
their members to vote regardless of
politics in city elections, better city gov
ernments would be the result. There
would be leas rings, less corruption, and
each societies as Tammany would lose
their power. The individual voters
could and would then meet on the com
mon ground of a common interest. Po
litical prejudices would be laid aside,
and the property owners and tax payers
would be able to have something to say
concerning the city government.
As it is, the citizen is bound by party
ties and party fealty, and the ward
striker being able to count practically
the amount of honest votes a candidate
or party is to receive, is enabled by com
binations to control the party and fill
the offices, though in a minority. We
believe the time will come when not
only city elections, but state elections
will be disconnected from national poli
tics. Each state has local interests
that are in no way connected with na
tional affairs, and outside of the legisla
tures which elect the United States
senators, state and national politics are
entirely dissimilar.
The time will come when the ability
of the man to fill the office will be the
first consideration, and his politics will
cut no figure. This will happen at least
as far as county officers are concerned
and it is already becoming the rule in
the smaller cities. New York City will
have an honest government when this
rule is adopted, and it will not have it
before.
HOW THEY GOT HERE.
Professor Wiggins has a theory that
man first came to the earth from Mars
on the tail of a comet. We don't pre
tend to hoist our humble judgment on
the same pole with the learned pro
fessor. We won't dispute bis assertion
with regard to man, but he can't comet
that way about the woman. She may
have come by the comet route, bat if
she did we will wager a week's wages
against a hundred dollars that she
occupied a front seat along with the
driver, and that she came -without her
Mars consent. The first lady in the
land must have presented a startling and
handsome appearance with her untanned
dog skin gloves, plumed hat and balloon
sleeves, as sLe rested her high-heeled
hoes against the dashboard and streaked
it through the upper ether. - Our private
opinion is that while man came from
Mars, the ladies, God bless them, are
lineal descendants of a daughter of the
Aurora Borealis, the condensation of . all
the lights and tints and delicate beauties,
for they remain and abide with her even
unto this day.
The Chinese way of dealing with a
general who loses a battle is -unique. Li
Hang Chang, who in happier days was
the most gaudily dressed person on the
face of the earth, is deprived of one or
more of his decorations every time the
Chinese arms meet a reverse. The last
thing of the kind was to deprive him of
his peacock feathers. If the Japs keep
up their work, Li will resemble any
other Shanghai rooster ecalded and half
picked.

however, when nothing was said about
fireworks, she became convinced that
her father had really meant what he

have no firecrackers, nor even a bundle
of torpedoes. All at onse she covered
her face, burst into tears, and said:
'O papa, what do you suppose bamuel
Adams and George Washington and
John Adams and John Hancock would
say if they were alive?"
That was too much for tne lond
father, who came home two hours
afterward loaded down with firecrack
ers, torpedoes, pinwheels, Roman can

governor of California, has secured Pro

ceive further attention at the hands of
the modern cynic.
Ex-Vice President Levi P. Morton
was nominated by the republicans for
governor of New York yesterday by al
most a unanimous vote on first ballot.
Dispatches of the same date state that
the present governor, Roswell P. Flower,
declines to become a candidate on the
democratic ticket for the same office.
Senator John P. Jones, having left his
party and joined the silver party of
. Nevada (not the populists) the republi
can state central committee ot Nevada
has asked him to resign. He has not
done so, nor will he, until the legisla
ture meets, and then he won't.
The Japs and Chinese have had a big
naval battle off the mouth of the Yalu
river. Honors were easy, each side sus
