FRIDAY,

IT NEEDS WATCHING.
Utah is to be admitted as a state, and
since a provision has been made that
the constitution must provide for the
suppression of polygamy and guaranty
the rights of gentiles, it may be quite
proper to give it statehood. It has the
population, and will make a good state,
as far as resources go ; yet we must con
fess to a feeling of doubt as to the pro
.priety of giving the Mormons statehood.
We know something of Utah in its ear
lier days, and what we know was not
gained from the lying history published
by that prince of liars, Hubert Howe
Bancroft, but from personal experience
and observation. The power of Brig
ham Young did not perhaps descend to
his successors ; but there is still a bitter
feeling' against the Gentiles, and this
feeling'is stronger in the rural districts
than in Salt Lake City.
. The infamous Mountain Meadow mas
sacre on the 26th and 27th. of Septem
ber, . 1S59, where 119 men, women' and
children were murdered ii cold blood
by the direct orders of Brigham Young,
which orders were carried out by Bishop
Heber C. Kimball, Nephi Johnson and
Klingman Smith, with John D. Lee as
head murderer, will forever remain a
blot on American civilization, and a dis
grace to the administration of that old
Dolly Vurden, James Buchanan, and
his appointee, Alfred CnmmingB, the
governor of the territory at that time.
This crime -went unpunished, for the
sacrificing of John D. Lee by the church
later was only to clear and protect the
leader and dignitaries thereof. Dozens
of other murders, notably those of Dr,
Robinson, Potter and Parish, were com
mitted on account of the Mormons pe
culiar religious tenets.
That this era has passed away is true.
, bnt it .has passed away because the
Mormons are no longer isolated, and the
Gentiles have gained strength. The
same spirit prevails yet, and unless the
state constitution fully guards the rights
of Gentiles Utah should never be ad
mitted as a state.
HE SAVED II1S BOOTS.
Col. J. M. Winstead killed himself at
Richmond, Virginia, yesterday by jump
ing from one of the towers of the city
hall, the jump measuring 170 feet, all
down. The -colonel showed that he ap
preciated the magnitude of the leap,
and considerately removed his boots b
f jre making the effort. The dispatches
are wofully deficient as to the causes of
the colonel's leap, or as to why he re
moved his galligaskins and shoes before
taking the fateful plunge. It matters
not, however, but since the colonel and
his title both became obsolete at one fell
plunge, an obsolete word will describe
the appearance (decidedly the last one)
of the remains. The resultant corpse,
with th colonel knocked out of it, was
gashful eight.
There may perhaps be some method
in President Cleveland's actions con
cerning the tariff bill. As long as it is
not signed of course it is not the law,
and as long as it is not the law, the
whiskey manufacturers can save twenty
cents a gallon, or abont $8 a barrel by
getting their liquors out of bond. This
they are doing at a very rapid rate, and
every day the bill remains unsigned is
adding thousands of dollars to their
profits. Is it possible that the president
ifl keeping faith-with the whiskey trust
as Gorman did with the sugar combina
tion? It certainly looks that way. '
It is Eaid that the champion jaw
smiths, Corbett and 'Jackson, have at
last agreed upon the terms and place for
a meeting to settle a little difference of
opinion between themselves as to which
is the better man. It may be the de
lirium tremens of sestheticism to draw
the color line between two terriers, but
it seem b to us Jackson ought to be above
patting himself on a level with that
class of Thite trash. "
- The Pendleton Tribune tells of a dog
being run through a threshing machine
near that place and concludes the state
ment by saying the half .minute's rnn
cost $100 for concavee, and $100 for dog,
and the dog disappeared backwards.
From this the qnery naturally arises
was that dog annihilated without injur
ing his bark?

J. B. Wilson, 371 Clay St., Sharps

Dr. King's' New Discovery for consump
tion, coughs and colds, that it cared his
wife who was threatened with pneumonia
after an attack 'of -"la grippe," when
various other remedies and several phy

Misfit Maslc.
The Salvation Army services are well
attended, their hall being crowded and
doorway jammed with people-anxious to
see what is going on. The brass horn
and big drum gather the crowd, and
when services begin it sounds like an
old fashioned minstrel show. The music
is of the modern variety, and it sounds
decidedly queer to hear the words of
some good old hymns sung to the music
of "Two Little Girls in Blue," "Down
Went McGinty" and "Annie Rooney,"
but it attracts the boys and that is what
is desired. .-
The Bloat Gorgeous Treasures of Arabia.
What a splendid picture it brought
before your mind ! You read the glow
ing descriptions of the secret treasures
which the genu ot the ring spread De-
fore Aladdin's gaze. . You perused this
favorite story of yours in "Arabian
Nights" when a boy,, and your imagina
tion pictured brilliantly lor you every
thing that the words suggested.
That was when vou were a bov. To
day, possibly, you are unable to do it.
bhall we tell you the reason why f Most
probable because your liver is sluggish,
and as a consequence you suffer from
sick headache, dizziness, and constipa
tion. Do you want to cure all thete
troubles permanently, make your liver
active, your imagination lively, and in
general enjoy things as you did when a
boy? All you have to do is to use Dr.
Pierce's Pleasant Pellets, purely vegeta
ble, perfectly harmless, the smallest and
easiest to take, and they are the cheap
est because they are guaranteed to give
satisfaction, or your money is returned.
