OFFICIAL ANARCHISTS,
'We would be pleased indeed to note
noise indication somewhere that the
corporations and wealth of the country
are not above the reach of the law. We
have diligently watched the course of
congress, only to find that the trusts
controlled it. Turning to the president
we find that Havemeyer speaks, and
hia lips, once eloquent in defense of the
common " people, grow dumb. The
United States courts are brought into
prominence with questions in which the
citizen and the corporations are both
before it, and.the citizen goes to the wall.
As a last resort, a commission is ap
pointed to examine into these same
questions of labor and capital, both be
ing charged with the same offense
boycotting; but the labor is tried, while
the corporations are asked no questions.
If there ever was an unholy conspiracy
in this country, it was that of the Amer
ican board of railway managers, yet
none of these are tried. Corporations
that have flagrantly violated every para
graph of the interstate commerce law,
from the day it was promulgated, ac
knowledge the existence of that law
only when it is invoked to protect them.
We do not believe in anarchy ; we do
believe in the strict enforcement of the
laws.
Let the railroads pause, and the
United States courts and congress
change their course. Let them be law-
abiding before their example is followed
and the people also become anarchists.
The worst anarchy in the United States
is that whose doctrines are promulgated
by congress, the courts and the corpo
rations. Let them beware when their
example is followed by the people. 4
OF GREAT FAITH.
Professor Falb's predictions of earth
quakes and tidal waves haye their amus
ing side. We are reliably informed that
many persons are leaving the seaside on
this account, showing that some people
are prone to believe. Without intended
slight to the great professor's scientific
attainments, we must confess to a spirit
of unbelief in his dire prognostications
Of course it is a serious thing when
Jupiter and the other big fellows get in
conjunction with Uranus, but we don't
"see why this should give our good old
mother earth the cholera morbus. We
think the professor is wrong in his
diagnosis. The situation reminds us of
what an old miner said of the geologists
"That they reminded him of a gnat on
the back of an elephant, formulating an
opinion concerning the internal con
struction of the animal from the appear
ance of the bide." Jupiter with his
moons, isn't going to affect us, and if
Saturn goes fooling round too near,
Havemeyer and the sugar ring will
absorb him. The only damage that will
be done by the professor's collection of
stars will be to break the seaside hotels.
The dispatches announce the engage'
ment of Miss Florence Pullman, daugh
ter of the sleeping car highwaymaD, to
the Prince of Isenburg-Birstein, "eldest
son of Prince Charles of Isenburg-Birstein
and the Archduchess Marie Louise
of Austria, and cousin of the emperor of
Austria." It may be possible that some
' of the elite of the effete East may be
interested in such news as the above,
but the great mass ot the American peo
ple have no more interest in Miss Pull
man's mashe3 than they have in those
of the coffee-colored descendants of bet
tor men than Pullman, down in the
cotton belt. The fact that an American
girl has used her father's ill-gotten
wealth to purchase a title is not calcu
lated to awaken any enthusiasm.
The curious old Latin phrase "Habet
bovem in lingua," has puzzled many
. good Latin scholars. It is translated
"He has a cow on his tongue." The
expression originated with the late Sen
ator Nesmith, who when he crossed the
plains with an ox team, on losing one of
his oxen yoked up a cow and worked
her on the off wheel, and of course
hitched to the tongue. On being asked
concerning his. outfit the great linguist
used the quotation which we have noted,
"Habet bovem in lingua."
' The first thing the legislature should
do next winter is to pass a bill increas
ing the salary of the assessor. The office
ie really the most important, one in the
county and.the hardest to fill. Its duties
are disagreeable, and its work difficult.
The assessor should be paid as much or
more than the clerk or sheriff.
Goldendale is to ' have a new . paper
the Independent. It will make its ap
pearance Saturday with W. J. Story as
editor.
, .Down at the seaside the high breakers
roll and the high rollers break on thy
hotel bars, oh sea! -
Congress will probably adjourn next
week. The tariff bill will, be settled
Monday afternoon, and the minor mat
ters pending will be dropped as soon as
that is done. It will be a relief to know
that they are done, and to find some
thing besides the dispatches from Wash
ington, in the newspapers. '
Took a Shot at Them.
The Troutdale couple who were mar
ried a few evenings ago had to adopt
stronger measures with eerenaders than
did the Albina pair that called out the
police department to tone down the bois
terous crowd bent on extending congrat
ulations. The newly married pair: of
Troutdale were so annoyed that the
bridegroomk too a shot at the night
prowlers. Fortunately no one was hit,
but the crowd all dispersed. The disap
pointed revelers then retaliated by mov
ing on the town, where they roused every
Bleeping inhabitant by their noise, so
says a correspondent. . They wound up
by killing a cat and stretching it up in
front of a hostelery, together with an ap
propriate sign. . The proprieter says he
would like to meet the parties who did
the work, under conditions which he
prefers to name. Troutdale is a lively
town. . ' '
The Most Gorgeous Treasures or Arabia.
What a splendid picture 'it brought
before your mind t You read the glow
ing descriptions of the eecret treasures
which the genii of the ring spread be
fore Aladdin's gaze. You perused this
favorite Btory of yours in "Arabian
Nights" when a boy, and your imagina
tion pictured brilliantly for you every
thing that the words suggested..
That was when you were a boy. To
day, possibly, you are unable to do it.
Shall we tell you the reason why? Most
probable because your liver is sluggish,
and as a consequence you suffer from
sick headache, dizziness, and constipa
tion. Do you want to cure all thete
troubles permanently, make your liver
active, your imagination lively, and in
general enjoy things as you did when a
boy? All you have to do is to use Dr.
Pierce's Pleasant Pellets, purely vegeta
ble, perfectly harmless, the smallest and
easiest to take, and they are the cheap
est because they are guaranteed to give
satisfaction, or your money is returned.
What more can you ask?,

- Ginseng; in China.
Ginseng is an important article of ex
port to China, and the trade is largely
in the hands of the resident Chinese
themselves. They buy the root of
wholesale dealers, who get it of coun
try folk at about two dollars and fifty
cents a pound. Chinamen seldom buy
directly from the countrymen, because
the latter being unacquainted with the
Celestials, are unwilling to send the
root C. O. D. . The Chinese make a mys
tery of the trade, but they send abroad
yearly many thousands of dollars
worth of ginseng. ' .
