PROOF POSITIVE.
Tbe great question that is agitation
tbe minds of Portland's citizens just
now is, "Were Mrs. Potter andf Mr.
Bettew in the Rev. Wallace's church
when that gentleman made his attack
upon them ?" Of course it doesn't much
matter whether they were or not, for
they have not only managed to beat the
Oregon i an, but also the Telegram, out
of some of the beet advertising that wps
ever put up on tbe coast. Looked at
from a business standpoint, one would
almost believe Mr. Wallace was a party
to the scheme. We do not mean to say
that he was, for in fact we do not be
lieve that way, but he can console him
self with the reflection that his ill-advised
attack will cause hundreds to visit
the theater where the Bellew-Potter
-combination shows.
Mr. Wallace says both ' Mrs. Potter
and Mr. Bel lew were in his church when
he denounced them. Mrs. Potter, Mr.
Bellew, Mrs. Emery and others say they
were not there. It is quite probable
that the Kev. Wallace was mistaken,
and indeed there is no reason why any
of the parties should deny their pres
ence in church on Sunday, if they were
present. If they were, it is to be sup-
poeed that they will not repeat the of
fense in Mr. Wallace's church.
The plot of the play which so aroused
Mr. Wallace's ire is of the stereotyped
order, not worse than "Camille, not
worse than "Fron Frou," both old-
timers that are favorites of the matinee,
Tha really ludicrous part of the com
edy is supplied by our contemporary,
the Evening Telegram. That paper,
profiting by its recent stage-robbing ex
perience, insists on having the public
understand that its information is cor
rect, and we give Ibelow a epecimen of
its cogent reasoning, from which it ar
rives at the conclusion that Mrs. Pot
ter's statement that she was not there is
true. The Telegram says:
Mrs. Emery can be relied npon, for
ehe comes from a family not given to
the fabrication of stories. She is the
daughter of the late General George
Sykes, who commanded the Twentieth
United States infantry, and during the
civil war was in command of the Fifth
army corps. He was a West Point
Classmate of General Sherman, and was
with General Scott in the Seminole and
Mexican wars. Many of this lady's rel
atives have been officers in the United
States army since the organization of
its government, and "army ladies" are
proverbial for their high sense of honor
and truthfulness.
We hazard the opinion that no so
unique a bit of reasoning has been ad
duced to establish a person's veracity
cince the late Judge Deady decided in
the Sarah-Althea-Hill-Sharon-(and af
terwards) Terry matter, that little red
headed Bill Sharon had so much money
'he couldn't tell a lie. We doubt not
but that Mrs. Emery is a truthful little
lady, but whether that truthfulness is
due to the fact that some of her relatives
were in the army, or that her father
was a classmate of General Sherman, is
aa open questior.
A glance a,t our front page will show
that we have ceased taking tbe dis
patches. We have done so for several
reasons, the first of- which is ithat the
outlay does not yield returns in the
shape of increased patronage. We did
not really expect that it would, or that
we ehould continue the service beyond
the time when the cars were again run
ning. The Dalles ought to be able to
support a paper taking the dispatches
but it will not; Many of our people
have taken the Oregonian so long, that
they consider it little short of tacrilege
for any paper to print the news ahead
of it, and could not possibly believe any
thing unless the Oregonian. printed it
first. As that paper with the fall dis
patches now arrives shortly after noon,
although then twenty hours later than
the brief dispatches we get, it is quite
sufficient for The Dalles.
The Oregon Weekly Democrat, pub
lished at Salem by E. H. Flagz, gives
notice in its issue of August 3d, that
that will be the last copy of the paper,
it suspending and with no intention of
resuming. The editor (as most demo
cratic editors do) quits cheerfully saying
that to maintain the paper was using up
hie means, and that a democratic paper
could not live in Marion county. If our
democratic friends will keep up their
wise course in Oregon, in another year
or two it will be a close race between
them and the prohibitionists for the
honor of chasing the political pro
cession. It is a pleasure to read of the way
criminal prosecutions are conducted in
France. The trial of Santo for the
murder of President Carnot was begun
Thursday, and Friday at noon the case
had gone to the jury. Fifteen minutes
later a verdict of "guilty without ex
tenuating circumstances" was returned
and Santo was at once sentenced to have

appeal was given, but in France that
appeal will be taken care of and decided
within a week and without further par
ley Santo will be .strapped on a board,
nnshed under the pendant knife, and a
moment later bis head will be in the
basket. There is no wasted sentiment
about eettine rid of such as he. Being
recognized as a dangerous animal, he
is put out of the way, as such.
This is a hard season of the year for
the hungry if the advice of the medical
fraternity is followed. One faction-says
eat little or no meat, for meat produces
heat and disease. Another lot says eat
little or no vegetables, for green vegeta
bles produce cholera morbus. The only
show seems to be to call every day Fri
day, and fill up 6n fish.
