JULY 12, 1894
a OATS THEY WILL BE.
The Mazamas are going to climb Mt.
Hood, storm it as it were from all sides,
the morning of the 19th, or next Thurs
day. To be more exact, we should have
eaid that a number of ladies and gentle
men will make the ascent that day, for
they will only be Mazamas when they
get there. The organization will be per
fected on the summit, those there on
the day and date named being the orig
inal and charter members. As a Ma
zama is nothing more nor less than an
ill emelling goat, we fail to see why so
much effort should be expended to
prove what is probably evident to the
friends and acquaintances of the to-be
Mazamas. We further suggest that the
genuine mazama stops near the snow
line. Those that go higher develop
traits of character that entitle them to
be classed with a better known animal
whose ears are like unto those of a
rabbit and whose song is as the sough
ing of a cyclone when it goes forth to
sough. Miss Fay Fuller of Tacoma, who
ascended Mt. Ranier, is to be one of the
.goateese?, and Mr. T. Brook White, who
will part his name in the middle to
catch his balance before he starts up,
will be another. H. D. Langille, yclept
Doug, for short, one of the genial hosts
of Cloud Cap Inn, and who has been on
top of the mountain as often as anyone,
will herd the Angoras who make the
ascent by way of "the finger," on the
east side. Doug, is young and hasn't
whiskers enough for a mazama, but
when we saw him on the Fourth he was
putting cold cream on his chin and try
ing to raise a goatee to entitle him to
membership. We hope he will make it,
otherwise he will climb as a kid. It
will be a jolly party though, and every
body that gets there will have a high
old time. Indeed, one cannot help but
wonder if vhen Miss Fay Fuller is
finally received into the first rank goat
rank if she won't then be "Fuller'n a
goat?"
COULD NOT BE CORRUPTED.
Mr. Debs says that Havemeyer has
corrupted the United States senate.
Mr. Debs is as badly mistaken in that
statement as he is in many of hia other
positions. Mr. Havemeyer did not cor
rupt the senate. There was no trifling
with the affections of that courteous
body. Mr. Havemeyer simply pur
chased in the open market, not the
virtue of the senate, but its lack of it.
He purchased in the open market that
which required not the wiles of the
seducer. The high sense of virtue, op
pressive dignity and owl-eyed aping of
wisdom, pertaining to the great Ameri
can side show, would deter even so
sweet a wooer as Havemeyer from fool
ing with the alleged virtue of the old
beldam. The senate did not require
corrupting, for by corruption most of
them became senators. Besides from
the time honored submission to the
commands of "senatorial courtesy,
most of them have become political
"courtesans." And then'suppose all Mr.
Debs says is true. Is that any reason
why by a strike the business of the
country should be paralyzed? If Mr.
Dbs feels so keenly the loss of virtue by
the senate, he should go gunning for
Havemeyer, and not for the farmer,
laborer and businessmen of the country
We fail to see any reason why Mr. Debs
should tweak the nose of the industries
of the country, or twit the common
people over the fact that the United
States senate had, so to speak, put red
window curtains in the senate chamber
windows.
HOW DO THEY KNOWt
An Ohio editor pays hay fever is
caused hy kissing erasa widows. A
Missouri editor says it is caused by the

An Iowa t-ditor says it is caused by kiss

hh exchange is of the ODinion that it
is caused by missing the girl and kissing

The above item is going the rounds of
the press, and so, in the interest of the
fraternity, and to protect the good name
of editors in general, we would like to
know how our fellow-scribblers obtained
their information, especially , the last
one. An editor - that would miss a girl

GOOD SENATORIAL TIMBER.
They have lots of fun, down in Ken
tacky ovt an election. Congressman
Bieckinridge has been stumping the
stute for two month, closely followed
by other speakers of his own political
faith, but differing from him on matters
of morals and religion. One would think
to read of the-immense meetings that a
regular campaign was being conducted,
but eu:h is not the case. The battle is
only for the nomination. Were it not
for the fact that a democratic nomiua-
tion is equivalent to an election, 'one
would hope tat the doughty coloDel
be defeated in order that the country be
not talked to death. With all the great

Sarsaparilla
' S. P. Smith, of Towanda, Pa.',
whose constitution was completely
broken down, is cured by Ayer'o
Sarsaparilla. He writes:
" For eight years, I was, most of the
time, a great sufferer from constipa
tion, kidney trouble, and indiges
tion, so that my constitution seemed
to he completely broken down. I was
induced to try Ayer's Sarsaparilla, and
took nearly seven bottles, with such
excellent results that my stomach,
bowels, and kidneys are in perfect con
dition, and, in all their functions, as
regular as clock-work. At the time
I began taking Ayer's Sarsaparilla, my
weight was only 129 pounds ; I now Ian
brag of 159 pounds, and was never in so
good health. If you could see me be
fore and after using, yon would want
me for a traveling advertisement.
I believe this preparation of Sarsaparilla
to be the best in the market to-day."

Deafness Cannot be Cured
By local applications, as they cannot
reach the diseased portion of the ear.
There is only one way to cure Deafness,
and that is by constitutional remedies,
rieafness is caused by an inflamed con

Eustachian Tube. When this tube gets
inflamed you have a rumbling sound or
imperfect hearing, and when.it is entirely
closed Deafness is the result, aud unless
the inflammation can be taken out and
this tube restored to its normal condi

nine cases out of ten are caused by
catarrh, which is nothing but an in
